PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Hits 30 Million Sales

Last year's massive hit multiplayer online battle royale PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has become one of the most successful game of recent times. The game rules on Steam and its popularity is increasing all over the world like wildfire. According to a recent stat from SteamSpy, PUBG has apparently sold 30 million copies for PC, which is of course great news for developer PUBG Corporation.

However, Steam’s own API shows that the number of concurrent players on the game has been drastically falling down. That raises the question that where all these players are going if they are not playing the game upon purchase and where does it takes the game in future.

What we need to get checked first is that the number of 30 million sales is for the PC version of PUBG only and that does not include the sales of Xbox One edition, which is exceptionally great for a new game that was released on Steam's Early Access. Before it even tuned into one whole year, version 1.0 of the game is dropped back on December, 2017. Considering above mentioned points, it is safe to say that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds isn't doing bad and we don't need to worry about the game's ongoing progress either.

Aside from that, PUBG has managed to consistently claim the top spot on Steam as the most-played game on the platform. After the game took over the crown over Dota 2, it has never been brought down from the same position. Over 1.6 million people from United States are currently playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and more than 1.1 billion hours have been played on PC so far.

The game had the highest number of participants simultaneously during the mid of January and the peak of that number was of more than 3 million players. Even if we take yesterday as an example, then there were more than 3 million concurrent gamers. So, the concern that is on everyone's mind is that, where are the rest of the people who bought PUBG?

There are a few possible reasons that pop into our curious minds on this regard. Most of the players who were initially very excited about the game may have lost interest. Many newcomers are maybe joining the party for version 1.0 of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds but they too are likely to go away soon. Then there is another battle royale game from Epic Games called Fortnite, which is free-to-play and since it's not on Steam, people are drifting away.

Another monumental reason for the drop on the number of players is the strict ban rule against those who cheat by PUBG Corp. If you think that idea is too far-fetched then you should also know that anti-cheat provider for the game, BattleEye has banned over 2.5 million players on this January alone. The shocking news is that the number of bans is only increasing every other day and if this continues, the end of February will see approximately 4 million bans.

Because of cheats, many players were robbed of their true gaming experience and abandoned the game. So, with help from Chinese government, PUBG Corp. even arrested a great number of cheat software providers in China. Despite all these issues, the game is still on the highest peak of Steam and not showing any signs of going down anytime soon. So, by cutting off all the cheats to create a fair online multiplayer environment, the developers are actually doing the right thing for the future of the project and the communities it has created worldwide.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a last-man-standing shooter from PUBG Corporation, available to play on PC and Xbox One for now. In the foreseeable future, the developers can even release the game on PlayStation 4 as the idea is still on their consideration and we would very much love to see that happen.
