Redfall Will Be Always Online

In less than a week ago, Microsoft has hosted their first ever Developer_Direct showcase event highlighting their anticipated releases for 2023, including upcoming first-person shooter Redfall by developer Arkane Studios for PC and Xbox.

Confirming a previous report, publisher Bethesda Softworks reveals to release Redfall later this year on May 2, 2023. They also announced lately that players will need an online connection to play the co-op shooter, even its single-player.

According to a newly-published official FAQ page, Redfall players will be able to enjoy playing it without an Xbox Live Gold subscription but they still need to be permanently connected online, whether they are playing co-op or going solo.

Players will also require a Bethesda.net account alongside a constant online connection to play Redfall. Modern games with DRM have a one-time online check to fight piracy but requirement for constant connection is pretty uncommon.

Many recent games like Gotham Knights, Marvel's Avengers and Monster Hunter Rise supports offline play for single-player mode. On the other hand, 2022 co-op platformer It Takes Two will only allow offline mode via local couch co-op.

Turtle Rock Studios' 2021 first-person co-op shooter Back 4 Blood needed an online connection at release, even when playing with AI teammates but they eventually removed it later on via an update and let players enjoy solo play offline.

While supporting game preservation with their backwards compatibility program, Xbox initially required online connection for Xbox One. More recently, their online DRM policy has backfired during a server outage by locking players out.

Redfall is set to arrive for PC and Xbox Series X/S with Xbox Game Pass day-one launch, on May 2, 2023. Despite being compared to horde shooters like Left 4 Dead, it has lot more in common with big open-world settings of Far Cry series.
