Batman: The Telltale Series Tie-In Comics "Sins of the Father"

With so many popular video games based on the popular DC Comics character Batman, it was quite a bold move for developer Telltale Games to come up with a brand-new saga of The Dark Knight with a re-defined origin. After the successful completion of Batman: The Telltale Series season one, Telltale is currently in-progress with season two, Batman: The Enemy Within. Now, a comic book limited series titled Batman: Sins of the Father is coming in February 2018.

The interactive experience of Telltale's episodic point-and-click graphic adventure really picked up audience interest and now, there is a tie-in book on the way. Veteran comic-book and TV writer for Netflix, Christos Gage (Civil War – House of M, World War Hulk – X-Men) is teamed up with artist Raffaele Ienco (Mechanism, Symmetry) to expand the universe even further by bridging the gap between the two seasons of the acclaimed game.

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR BATMAN: THE TELLTALE SERIES.

After his debut in the newly re-imagined Gotham City, Bruce Wayne has encountered many villains and psychopaths as himself and his alter ego, Batman. The situation is not always black and white for him and that is why he has to go infiltrate a crime joint to reach the bottom of the problem. Fan favorite characters like Jim Gordon and Amanda Waller crosses paths with him but they too are not exactly are who we used to know in comics, despite some basics of course.

Working on Sins of the Father is quite a throwback for writer Christos Gage as he started his early comic-book endeavor with a Deadshot mini-series nearly 15 years ago that was later re-printed as Deadshot: Bulletproof and the same character is making his way into the world of Telltale's Batman to serve as the main antagonist for the series. Also, Bruce Wayne will get back to restore his family reputation after discovering the shocking revelation about his father.

Already taking a bold new direction for all the characters that we've known for almost all of our lives, Sins of the Father presented a challenge for Christos Gage and his partner Raffaele Ienco to walk a parallel path and live up to the expectation of the fans. The online playthrough videos of Batman: The Telltale Series season one really helped the old hand of Gage here when his editor Jim Chadwick tasked him to handle the project.

Besides, the unique nature of the world Telltale's Batman presents the opportunity to make a few tweaks at the established canon without ruining the core of that character. While Bruce is already having a hard time learning that his father Thomas Wayne was not the heroic figure he thought of, it seems even Alfred was aware of this secret and that makes it a lot worse. The legacy he has built on and the lifelong crime-fighting career he has taken seems baseless to him now.

Providing, where the developer studio wants to go next with Batman: The Enemy Within and later with newer seasons of Batman: The Telltale Series, Gage and Ienco still had enough freedom to create a direction where they wanted this version of The Dark Knight to go. There will probably a chapter where both Bruce Wayne and Floyd Lawton will come face to face without their masks and that should be something no one wants to miss. The writer believes that somehow Deadshot is just a dark reflection of Batman considering all odds.

Another character from Batman legend named Black Spider is part of the story and he is hired by Deadshot to face off his enemy. As usual, Commissioner Jim Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth are inseparable parts of Bruce's life as they are in Sins of the Father. Characters that made their debut on Batman: The Enemy Within won't have any direct interaction with Bruce Wayne/Batman though but hopefully they will make their presence known for sure.

Telltale Games have already done a fantastic job by re-telling Bruce Wayne's origin in their first game based on Batman and how he eventually discovers a criminal conspiracy in his family. From the beginning of the video game series, Bruce had been trying to bring balance to Gotham City by going undercover to make an ally with the underworld loonies and then being The Caped Crusader at night to fight crime.

The official synopsis to the first digital issue of "Batman: Sins of the Father" series is as follows:

"After the events of season one, Bruce Wayne is working to rebuild the reputation of his family and their company, Wayne Enterprises, while his alter ego, Batman, attempts to create a working relationship between himself and the GCPD. However, before Bruce can begin reparations for the families affected by Thomas Wayne, a mysterious figure begins killing people associated with Arkham Asylum. As suspicion falls on the families suing Wayne, Batman will begin his own investigation into the mystery assassin—and he’ll paint a target on his own back in the process."
Since the story takes place after season 1 and before season 2, events taken place during the "Sins of the Father" will be later featured in later episodes of The Enemy Within in August, 2018. Seeing Telltale following the footsteps of other big-name franchises in film and gaming industry to expand their fictional universe into tie-in comics says how much they really care for the saga of The Dark Knight they have established over the two seasons of the game.

DC Comics is taking the same approach with this limited series as they did with Injustice: Gods Among Us series, by releasing two chapters digitally before they are available as print issue. The first digital chapter of the book will be released on release February 12 and the rest will come out in every other week. February 21 marks the date for the first print issue from the remaining six from the limited series.

Marvel Games to Feature Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie

The new monthly ongoing Exiles comic-book series by writer Saladin Ahmed (Black Bolt) and artist Javier Rodriguez (Daredevil, Spider-Woman) from Marvel Comics is kicking-off soon. The team will consist of Blink along with Kamala Khan, Iron Lad, original Nick Fury and Wolverine from X-Babies. Most recently, the team has recruited their final member would be the worthy defender of Asgard; Valkyrie. However, the version featuring in the comics will be Tessa Thompson’s depiction of Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok.

When revealed, this has been a hot talking topic among the comic-book fans and those who loved the MCU-inspired portrayal of the character by the talented actress. The real hype started when Marvel Games' executive creative director Bill Rosemann has posted a Tweet of Valkyrie's concept art by artist Javier Rodriguez, backing up Marvel's intention of re-branding the character with her new image.

Rosemann clearly stated that they are going to use this brand-new cinematic version of the Asgardian in many of their upcoming projects from Marvel Games. That being said, Thompson’s Valkyrie has already made her way into Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 and Marvel’s Avengers Academy. We can easily guess that she might end up showing in Marvel Puzzle Quest or Marvel Strike Force as well and it will be of no surprise.

This also leads to the possibilities of the version of her being in Marvel Games and Square Enix’s upcoming in-progress work titled "The Avengers Project". The sole purpose of that game is to bring back Marvel's awesomeness to world of console games. So far, the game had dropped just an announcement trailer almost a year ago and not much from the clip can be deciphered about the project. Whatever little details got about The Avengers Project was that it will have a dark tone and probably won't feature the traditional team of The Avengers that we grew up loving.

Instead, the roster of the team will feature new generation of heroes. So, if we see Jane Foster as Thor and not Odinson and Sam Wilson as Captain America and not Steve Rogers, we shouldn't be very shocked. Chances are The Avengers are either dead or lost in time and the new generation of Marvel heroes will take over. We clearly see no reason why Tessa Thompson’s portrayal of Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok couldn't be a part of that new team. She is bad-ass enough to be a game character and it is a great way to introduce her to a larger audience base.

We also cannot write-off the idea that some of the heroes featured in Square Enix’s "The Avengers Project" may end up having their solo video games depending on their popularity. It is time that major game developers like Square Enix realizes the potential of bringing underused female characters in considerable roles for their games. Right now, we just can't wait to see Tessa Thompson’s awesome Valkyrie to make her way into some major titles from Marvel Games.

Skybound's founder Robert Kirkman (Battle Pope, Haunt) is also looking forward to work on the book as well. Even though this acclaimed comic-book creator will not be writing plotlines for the comics, he will be overseeing the project. The primary goal of Com2us and Skybound's partnership is to reach out audiences from around the world and different cultures through building and expanding universe of the franchise in different mediums.

Com2us studio has full faith on Robert Kirkman's work as the guy needs no introduction to people anyway. Those who may or may not know him have at least heard of The Walking Dead, which was his brain-child on Image Comics and now has become a global phenomenon after it was adapted into a television series on AMC TV. So, everyone on board with the Summoners War comic-book tie-in project is pretty assured about the quality of the upcoming book.

Developer Com2us's Summoners War lets a player to choose from and summon a thousand different monsters to duel. The game has already crossed the landmark of 80 million downloads on mobile devices and generated over one billion dollars revenue so far. Aside from the upcoming comics, the studio has plan for producing an animated series and much more stuff that is focused on the game and its base elements.

The Evil Within 2 Tie-In Comics

Resident Evil series creator Shinji Mikami returns with the survival horror game The Evil Within sequel that was announced at E3. The game starts and quickly delves into the new story without pausing for us to catch on what happened between The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2. The opted gap is still pretty foggy to us. So, Bethesda Softworks has teamed up with Titan Comics to produce a prequel story for The Evil Within 2.

This two-part comic book will solely feature on the perspective of Detective Sebastian Castellanos. He is already pretty disturbed with the events that took place in the previous game and now he is back to deal with another problem like that.

Detective Sebastian used to work in Krimson City Police Department but then suddenly he is introduced with this unexpected nightmare alley, where his life gets messed up pretty badly. The guy lost his job, loved ones and now he is at the brink of losing his sanity. So, it is safe to say that Sebastian's life isn't a very charming one right now.

the evil within 2 the interlude
The Evil Within: The Interlude

In this comic titled "The Interlude", Sebastian Castellanos is on the hunt of a serial killer, who is on a murdering spree. What bothers him is that the killer is hunting down his victims like the way Ruvik did. Problem is, Ruvik used to kill people in the exact fashion but only inside of STEM. This killer, our hero is after actually killing people in the same style but in the real world. Now, that is a very uncanny co-incidence to overlook for anyone, let alone Detective Sebastian.

To get the story in order, comic-book writer Ryan O’Sullivan (Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III, Turncoat), artists Damien Worm (Dark Souls, The October Faction) and Szymon Kudranski (Spawn, Daredevil/Punisher) were brought in for the project. Ryan believes the game to be a perfect match for his test as he is a fan of games like Alone in the Dark, Amnesia, Dead Space, Resident Evil, Silent Hill and System Shock.

Damien is a dedicated fan of horror games, whether it is survival horror or adventure in the mix. Silent Hill and Dino Crisis from 90's are among Szymon's favorites. They both played the first game and loved it. So, working on the prequel comic-book project for the sequel game was an exciting experience for them for sure.

Friday the 13th of October 2017 is marked for the worldwide release of The Evil Within 2 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. So, if you are truly drawn towards the horror-mysteries of the game, be sure to pick up the prequel comics series before you play the game.
