Injustice 2 Scrapped Character Concept Art Revealed

New unused character designs of John Constantine, Krypto the Superdog and Penguin for the game revealed by Injustice 2 concept artist.

Following their immense success with 2013's fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm Studios came up with a sequel, Injustice 2 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017, that even surpassed its predecessor in many aspects.

The game has a roster full of iconic DC Comics characters as playable fighters as well as other heroes like Hellboy from Dark Horse Comics and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from IDW Publishing. Recently, a number of unused concept arts have revealed a few characters that didn't make it to the final roster.

Shared on ArtStation by senior concept artist Justin Murray, these min-blowing artworks of the characters from Injustice comic books has Batman's protege Bluebird, Detective ChimpEtrigan the DemonJohn Constantine, Krypto the Superdog and Penguin.

During the story arc in comics, they have either sided with The Regime and The Insurgency or chose their own way but there was no apparent reason for excluding them from the game. However, we didn't wait for any official statement and have our own theory on it.

For one, neither Detective Chimp nor Penguin is a competitive fighter who can give other playable characters a tough time. Even occult detective John Constantine is no physical combatant despite him being a highly skilled sorcerer.

Young vigilante hero Bluebird on the other hand could've made it but considering other better-known costumed fighters like Batgirl and Zatanna didn't made it to the sequel, this electrical engineer from Batman comics introduced during the run of Scott Snyder (All-Star Batman – My Own Worst Enemy, Batman – Court of the Owls) had slim chances.

Another plausible reason for these characters not to show up in Injustice 2 maybe because many of them ended up dying in the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic-book series, thus their presence in the game could have been tricky for the storyline to connect.

Etrigan The Demon lost his connection to mortal realm when Jason Blood, his human host was killed in a battle against The Regime. Although John Constantine didn't die after his rebellion of magic community took a stand opposing Superman, he simply left the conflict.

The original publisher for the Mortal Kombat series, NetherRealm Studios may strongly consider another sequel to the Injustice franchise and these characters can even show up in that game if they are somehow brought back to the tie-in comic-books.

According to some recent rumor flying around, the studio is already working on a new project and it can either be a new installment for Mortal Kombat or Injustice 3, which we can only tell for sure once we get some more evidence on hand.

Rocksteady Rumored to Announce Superman Game?

Rumor has it that developer Rocksteady Studios is going to announce an Open World Superman game very soon.

Developer Rocksteady Studios were the ones behind the critically-acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, which probably is the best iteration of Batman on video game media. The franchise started with Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009 as we saw a perfectly balanced Dark Knight with equal part stealth and some serious butt-kicking action. Recently, a new poster on an image-based online bulletin board 4chan seems to be hinting at an upcoming open world Superman game from the same developer.

rocksteady superman game rumor
Rocksteady Rumored to Announce Superman Game?

Rocksteady went full open world with Arkham City and Arkham Knight after their first attempt of making a decent The Dark Knight game was successful. Just like we experienced all those fan-favorite insane villains from the pages of comic-book coming live in Arkham series, we believe they will do the same justice with everyone's favorite big blue here. It's been a few years that fans are being teased for a Superman game from the same studio but got nothing so far.

We couldn't even get any confirmation on whether or not they have started with any development work at all or is the project got scrapped, which actually happens more time than you think. The idea was also presented that perhaps it has been secretly developed by them to release as a tie-in to some future live-action Superman film but what we didn't have is some solid information. With the emergence of the new poster online, we now have more reasons to be doubtful.

From what we were able to gather from the post was that the developers will officially reveal the game itself a few weeks before E3, which marks the date for June, 2018.

Rumored Rocksteady Superman Game Poster

Other than the poster, we have some brief details on the game that seems promising even though sources are not officially confirmed yet.

  • Made by Rocksteady
  • Unreal Engine 4
  • Big open world Metropolis (about 3 times the size of Arkham Knight with a lot more buildings)
  • Can't play as Clark Kent
  • Main villain is Brainiac
  • Nerfed Superman (TAS Levels)
  • Semi-destructible environments (think AK, no buildings are falling over)
  • Combat system integrates the flying (kind of like DBZ, you can punch someone then zoom towards them and repeat)
  • Set within the Arkhamverse
  • Tons of easter eggs to Superman's lore, and some to the events that took place in the Batman Arkham Franchise

The problem with anonymous sources is that they have no validity no matter how much information they have and that's why they are not reliable at all. The poster from the thread sure looks like a concept art of some sort but it turns out to be an excellent fan-art by artist Charles Logan from his ArtStation account, which he actually posted three years back. According to artist himself, it sure was a concept art for a client’s Superman video game pitch but it was scrapped later.

rocksteady superman game villain brainiac
Brainiac to be Main Villain

This is not the first time a "leak" was claimed by a 4chan post about a game on Man of Steel but one of many. In November 2017, there was another rumor from the same website which claimed a cover story regarding the game will be featured on Game Informer, which was declined by executive editor Andrew Reiner himself. Apparently there was another rumor from three years ago, when this rumor first came out and Logan's art was also from around the same time. So, is there a chance that it was truly for a Superman game? If it is, can it be brought back?

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Artwork Released

After THQ was declared bankrupt, developers of Darksiders and Darksiders II from Vigil Games have formed Airship Syndicate. Their creative director and CEO Joe Madureira (Astonishing X-Men, Ultimates 3) happen to be a veteran comic-book artist for Marvel Comics and needless to say that his run on the industry was quite legendary as he played a key-role in revolution of the long-running Uncanny X-Men series.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Artwork Released

In his time as an artist for Image Comics, he left a series; Battle Chasers unfinished and when his team of Airship Syndicate selected the title to be made into their first turn-based RPG project, both Joe and his die-hard fans were jumping with joy in excitement. The game, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is going to see its release on October, 2017 and lead artist Joe Mad has released a couple pieces of concept arts ahead of the release.

battle chasers nightwar gully
Gully

Most of the chat in this game takes place via 'dialogue portraits' as it used to be in the old days RPGs. Some of the characters were done before they came up with the concept for it. For example, the major role of the series is of a little girl named Gully. In the comic-book arc, she is younger but here in the game, she is more grown up now. The hood of her cloak is over her head now and she doesn't wear shorts anymore.

battle chasers nightwar garrison
Garrison

The second in line is the sword-wielding, lone-warrior Garrison. Though, he is not the character that the plot revolves around, yet he is the primary male protagonist here. Considering all other facts in hand, his design layouts probably remained the closest to the original he had.

battle chasers nightwar red monika
Red Monika

The game certainly is bringing back the gun-toting, beautifully voluptuous bounty hunter Red Monika. They had to bring her for her link with both Gully and Garrison. Here, her design gets under some changes as ‘proportions’ of her frame is slightly changed. While playing, she will have to jump around, fire those guns in her disposal and all that. So, Joe maintained a balance of keeping her agile and sexy at the same time, even though the changes have upset a lot of fans.

battle chasers nightwar knolan
Knolan

A wizard, who is fighting the good fight for centuries, Knolan is the same old' grumpy gandolf as ever. A mentor to Gully, his final designs also remained as closed to the original as was in the books.

Another fan-favorite character from the series was the war golem Calibretto, who joined the heroes in their noble quest. This gentle giant returns as the fabled story has started adapting into a modern RPG and by the looks of it, the color scheme of his armor got brighter. Otherwise, every other aspect is almost the same as they were when we saw them on printed pages.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar has introduced a brand-new character for the game, who never debuted on the pages of comic before. A demon hunter in nature, Alumon was added to the Battle Chasers roster of heroes after fans have stretched a goal on the Kickstarter campaign for the game. Alumon uses dark magic and he is a mysterious persona whom you might mistake as a villainous figure at first. The mask on his face is partially responsible for that vibe though.

Joe did the first piece of splash art for Battle Chasers: Nightwar, that colorist Christian Lichtner has later touched up. Now, this was the first time he drew the characters for the first time in many years and given the fact that the original colorist from the series also collaborated on this piece, made it even special.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar Alternate Splash Art

The first piece of splash art is amazing and there are no doubts about it. Then, Madureira created another alternate version of the original. This one featured his line art and Grace Liu poured life in it with his exceptional coloring skills. This took quite a long time to finish as the artist constantly ran out of space on paper he was drawing on and had to attach more and more every time he did. The scan process was also tiring and the whole experience brought the sweet result in the end.

Junkers and Bandits

The junkers and bandits you will come across during your exploring in the game have a little place in the concept board as well. The heroes will be meeting them on places all over the island they embark their adventurous journey on. Often, they might seem like the different variation of the same model if you notice closely.

Wargolem Gunhulk Concept Art

The saga of Battle Chasers takes place in a steampunk reality setup where technology is blended into the mix of sword and sorcery very well. So, you shouldn't be surprised when you encounter a giant who wields a big-ass machine-gun and points it at your face as you plan to make your next move. The name Wargolem Gunhulk clearly announces the source of inspiration for creating such creature.

Vibrant World Visual

While creating the concept for the surrounding environment, the artist made a couple of experiments with the already existing lore of fantasy setting that he created years ago. Sometime, he just took a few pieces of his previous work and meshed it with something entirely new. The final visual of the concepts are quite spectacular to be accurate.

Upon witnessing such a parade of masterful artwork for the game, it is safe to say that Airship Syndicate was totally aware of what they were designing and why fans were so hyped out for the project from its Kickstarter days. Needless to say that while the designs and drawings are a prime asset for the game, it doesn't lack in gameplay either. Battle Chasers: Nightwar will be available to play on Mac, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One from October 3, 2017. Owners of Nintendo Switch will have their hands on the game on December 31.

Disruptor Beam Art Director, Allen White has shown his utmost dedication and attention to detail towards the character art for The Walking Dead: March To War. The artwork is pretty edgy and crisp, but the raw finishes on the characters we love made each portrait looking more exquisite. Previously worked on projects like SmashMuck Champions, Allen White seem to have well taken care of the challenge of designing Rick and his gang by delivering an awe-striking batch of models with artist Richard Anderson.

"THE WALKING DEAD: MARCH TO WAR takes place in the midst of Rick and Negan's "All Out War" storyline, where bands of Survivors from around Washington, DC are forming larger groups and fighting for territory. The player becomes a leader of their own group and in turn decides what they will do to survive. This is one of the most fun aspects of THE WALKING DEAD: MARCH TO WAR. It creates a turning points in the story; from small personal dramas to much bigger scale actions and consequences all based on decisions you make as the player."

Dishonored 2 Concept Art

Action game genre has always been able to draw more gamers to their fold, because action is pure fun. When certain developers added a twist of stealth in it, stealth action category made a unique fan-following that started revolution with games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell, to the more recent day hit like Batman: Arkham series of games. So, when Bethesda Softworks decided to bring a game like Dishonored back in 2012, everyone lost their mind in it.

dishonored 2 corvo and emily
Dishonored 2 Concept Art

Previously, the game allowed the players to take the role of royal assassin Corvo Attano, who set out to protect Princess Emily. Four years have passed since and Bethesda also felt like the game deserved a sequel where they will not only bring back Corvo but also introduce his Empress Emily Kaldwin as a playable character.

With their unique setting for the game to character design and gameplay style, the world of Dishonored is truly a fascinating one. Ever wondered how these behind-the-scene stuffs goes before the game goes public? Well, courtesy of Arkane Lyon's art director Sebastien Mitton for Dishonored 2, we here have some exclusive character concept arts to peak at the early stage of development.

Emily Kaldwin

When the studio initially made an internal reveal that they are about to work on a sequel and Emily Kaldwin is going to have her own adventures in it as well, the entire creative team was very excited and all they tried is to give everything they got in store for their love to her. How Emily became such an elegant royal figure and a lot of that came from fashion shows in particular.

Corvo Attano

In the game's timeline, it has been 15 years since the events of the first game took place. So, it was time that series protagonist Corvo Attano undergoes some changes while still retaining his iconic posture. As he has moved on from his former position, he has aged too. So, his costume has gone through change and it perfectly reflects his position in the society as well as what his true identity is. His well tailored suit allows him great mobility and the mask also got some tweaks to adjust to his face.

Returning roles like The Outsider did not receive heavy changes though but still got some for the sake of passing time. Except for the outlines of his attire balanced and details are slightly redesigned, there will be no significant change to notice.

Delilah Copperspoon

Seeing whatever improvement the sequel brings for Delilah may give you the idea that the designers just took a couple of issues from Vogue and l’Officiel magazines to get their inspiration for her concept. Actually, that is sort of what happened there but it's not like they did it to save time or they were out of imagination or something. Sure, a few specific dresses have pointed the idea to the designer but in the end, they did it in their own style.

Anton Sokolov

The design for mystic alchemist Anton Sokolov has seen some great change compared to his previous look from Dishonored. Since he is also a painter, designers looked for inspirations from historic figures like Grigori Rasputin, Leonardo da Vinci and Nikola Tesla.

The Duke

Luca Abele is the acting Duke of Serkonos in this story and his costume speaks for his character portrayal as well. It boldly announces his authority, while retaining his monstrous nature just like his lunatic father.

The Duke's very own Grand Inventor and the twisted mind behind The Clockwork Mansion, the design of Kirin Jindosh reflects his sharp and analytic personality as players comes face to face with him when he is an assassination target.

As you play, you will probably notice many typical yet unique faces living up in Karnaca. They might remind you of a mixture of many ethnic groups but the one thing they all have in common is that their dresses are well tailored and their body have witnessed some rough histories over the course of time. Their clothing and characteristics got more detailed attention of the designers.

Guards

Another batch of characters that might seem insignificant at times but has a lot to represent the game was the Guards. Do you happen to know Agustin Casasola of the Mexican Revolution by any chance? I, for one didn't at first. The one in the right side on the picture above shares quite a lot resemblance to him.

Mindy Blanchard

Yes, she belongs to the Howler gang and works under Paolo; Mindy Blanchard can be found near the black market and is introduced in Dishonored 2. The tattoos over her body tell a lot of stories about who she is and she is designed to portray a dark-shady person.

Breanna Ashworth

Another dark-natured person we cannot simply overlook here is Breanna Ashworth, also introduced in the sequel. Her concept was conceived to echo the path of darkness she represents as one of the witches working with Delilah.

The fascinating monsters of a steampunk setting of the world, Clockwork Soldiers were quite challenging to design for the creative team. What you see above is just a prototype work of these mechanical terrors before the animators and VFX artists perfected their final look for the game.

Throne

The biggest and greatest thrill for the art team was to design the royal throne, which is improved with better design. The four key aspects the designers kept in mind while working on it were Power, Magic, Assassin and Mystery. Can you say that they have failed? Don't think so. Otherwise, Corvo and Emily would've looked awful in there. This is what great work of devotion looks like I suppose.

Time has surely passed by a lot in the world of Corvo Attano and it clearly shows in every detailed design around. It sets the mood and tone of Dishonored 2 pretty well. If you are familiar with the game and its surroundings, you will see the amount of work the entire team has put through to make you feel that 15 years have passed in terms of the game's timeline and they really care about it. Set to release worldwide on November 11, 2016, Dishonored 2 will be available for play on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
