Doom and Doom 2 Gets 60 FPS Support

In a latest update, Bethesda adds 60 FPS, quick saves and add-on support for classic Doom games re-releases.

In a rather surprising move, classic first-person shooter games Doom, Doom II and Doom 3 were re-released back in July 2019 during keynote events of QuakeCon for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Even though they were well received, these games were not without some shortcomings in terms of save functions and visuals but a recent update from publisher Bethesda Softworks has attempted to address them on all platforms.

According to official press release, both Doom and Doom 2 is getting native 60 FPS support from its original 35 FPS cap. This drastic increase of frame rates will let Slayers roam more freely around circles of Hell shooting demons.

To help out many enthusiastic speedrunners and survivors of Nightmare difficulty, Quick Save has been enabled. At any point, pause the game and start instantly from your Load Game using L/L1/LB buttons depending on your platform.

Add-on feature will enable players to enjoy additional content, which are free to download. Community episodes and megawads for these games from a curated list will be included, with more coming soon based on fan feedback.

This update also offers original campaign SIGIL by Doom co-creator and renowned designer John Romero along with two map packs TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment that came out on launch of Final Doom back in 1996.

Moreover, expected features like Aspect Ratio, Brightness options, improved Level Select function, performance optimization, quality-of-life adjustments, Quick Weapon Select feature and split-screen HUD are newly added as well.

Aside from reviving old-school titles of Doom franchise, Bethesda is working with developer id Software on a sequel to 2016 series reboot titled Doom Eternal that is currently scheduled to arrive on March 20, 2020 for all major platforms.

Fortnite Getting New Creative Mode Liferun

Epic Games to add new Creative mode game Liferun for Fortnite, which will debut shortly at PAX South.

Aside from its lesser known survival-shooter game mode Save the World and free-to-play battle royale, Fortnite added a Creative mode in late 2018 that allows players freedom to freely build arena and even new games modes.

Reportedly, developer/publisher Epic Games will include a new Creative mode titled "Liferun" for Fortnite where people will get busy saving lives instead of getting kills and it will be first showcased shortly at PAX South 2020.

Liferun gets officially revealed between January 17 and January 19 at PAX South, San Antonio, Texas. Renowned streamers DrLupo, Lachlan and ONE_shot_GURL will be right there to play the game directly from convention.

Epic Games have yet to announce whether or not Creative mode Liferun will be a limited time collaboration/crossover event or here to stay as a permanent addition to Fortnite but we can expect it to last for a few weeks at least.

While some players are whining about Season 1 of Fortnite Chapter 2 being too long since it will run until February 2020 and no content update coming before next season, a new Creative mode is actually a breath of fresh air for many.

Fortnite is Highest-Earning Video Game of 2019

Even after seeing a 25% less profit than last year, Fortnite of Epic Games remained a top-earning game of 2019.

For past few years, developer/publisher Epic Games has been dominating video game sphere with their free-to-play online battle royale game Fortnite as well as its own genre by competing with titles like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.

Fortnite Battle Royale still remains the highest-grossing games of 2019 when it comes to overall revenue, even though it has seen a drastic 25% downward trend in profits compared to previous year, according to a recent report from SuperData.

In a recent review of digital gaming space, Neilsen Company SuperData revealed that Fortnite took top spot in profit charts for second year in a row by generating $1.8 billion revenue despite seeing a 25% decrease from $2.4 billion of 2018.

Due to their approach to overly popular battle royale genre with a free-to-play business model, Fortnite has appealed to many people. Epic Games also hosted high-profile eSports events to heavily promote their pride jewel to a mass audience.

Moreover, collaborations with major franchises like Avengers, Batman, John Wick and Star Wars has drawn more players to the game. Lately, Fortnite premiered brand-new footage The Rise of Skywalker ahead of its theatre release.

During these limited time crossovers events, bundle of themed cosmetic items and Battle Passes are sold through in-game digital storefront known as Item Shop that players can pick up spending real-world money, thus generating revenue.

Other free-to-play games generating a billion dollar revenue are Dungeon Fighter Online, Honour of Kings, League of Legends, Candy Crush Saga, Pokémon Go, Crossfire, Fate/Grand Order, Game for Peace and Last Shelter: Survival.

Although AAA-title release number is reduced, heading over to mobile platform has been a successful move for major publishers. Both Call of Duty: Mobile and Mario Kart Tour were able to offer experience of their console counterparts.

Two highest-grossing games of 2019 were FIFA 20 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, earning $786 million $645 million respectively. In comparison, free-to-play titles have earned so much more than these annual blockbuster series.

Most of those titles made it to the top due to their accessibility to players on PC, consoles or handhelds. In spite of taking a 5% dip in 2019 for year-over-year contrast, premium game revenue has totaled to a whopping $18.9 billion.

In a latest controversy regarding China, professional soccer player of Turkish-German origin and Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil is removed from popular football simulation game Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 for his criticism of the country.

According to a United Nations report, China is currently detaining more than one million Muslims within internment camps at Xinjiang region, which Özil has taken stance against through his Instagram and Twitter posts.

According to an expert, Özil's statement could cause Premier League clubs to lose millions in revenue for broadcast deals and sponsorship from Chinese market, which is another example of Chinese censorship affecting Western entertainment media.

Özil posted a poem on his Twitter account where he spoke out against China and their treatment to Muslism of Uighurs.

Foreign ministry of China has debunked his claims saying, the former Germany player has been blinded and mislead by media. Afterwards, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV pulled out live coverage of a match between Arsenal and Manchester City.

Chinese company NetEase is the series publisher in Chinese market and they stated to remove the character of known Arsenal star from all three existing titles including PES 2020 Mobile for their region following his outspoken statement.

In response to his harsh criticism, NetEase has posted their comments on Chinese social media site Weibo.

The German player Ozil posted an extreme statement about China on social media. The speech hurt the feelings of Chinese fans and violated the sports’ spirit of love and peace. We do not understand, accept, or forgive this.

Last year, developer/publisher Ubisoft made change to blood spatters, slot machines and others aspects of tactical shooter title Rainbow Six Siege in order to comply with Chinese regulations but reverses all changes after community backlash.

Most recently, Blizzard Entertainment has banned eSports player and Hearthstone champion Blitzchung for a year when decided to stand up in solidarity with protestors of Hong Kong and show his support in an official stream in October 2019.

Earlier this year, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has Tweeted out his support for Hong Kong protestors and was forced to delete his post shortly afterwards when it has strained relationship between China and NBA.

To appease Chinese Football Association and do damage control to minimize further financial blow, Arsenal has since distanced themselves from his extreme personal comments and claimed to be "always apolitical" as a club.

So far, original series publisher Konami has yet to make any comment over removal of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil from Pro Evolution Soccer 2020. It is very much likely for them to sit this one down and let NetEase do what they want to.

Pro Evolution Soccer has just renewed their license agreement lately with well-known Premier League clubs to continue their long-running partnership on PES series with plans to largely focus on eFootball Pro tournaments online.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends Halts Development

Bethesda to hold development for The Elder Scrolls: Legends, effectively cancelling its console launch and further updates.

Expanding on popular fantasy action role-playing series The Elder Scrolls, free-to-play collectible card game The Elder Scrolls: Legends from Bethesda Softworks has enjoyed average success on PC platform since its release back in 2017.

In a latest announcement on a social media post, Bethesda confirmed that development for TES: Legends has now been put on hold for indefinite period of time, therefore cancelling its upcoming official console launch and content updates.

Community manager for Legends, Christian Van Hoose recently stated on Reddit that players would still be able to enjoy online or single-player modes and will receive continued support for monthly rewards and all in-game events.

However, any pre-planned expansion or update from March 2019 development roadmap is now effectively canceled. So far, they have rolled out three out of four DLC card packs and only the fourth one set to arrive on winter got axed.

In an interview last year, Bethesda senior vice president of marketing, Pete Hines said that Legends was in a stable form in terms of number of players and he expressed that console release would likely to help that number grow.

In their keynote event at E3 2018, further plans for launch of a Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version was revealed with a scheduled window set for later that year, which never really saw light of the day.

Original developer studio Dire Wolf Digital for TES: Legends was replaced by Sparkypants Studios in last summer, because publisher Bethesda wanted to move to a new direction and had nothing to do with their overall work.

Looks like Bethesda Softworks is more eager to focus their efforts on other projects like highly-anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI, a sequel to critically-acclaimed The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and next mainline entry into named franchise.

Due to development halt, any amount spends on in-game items are now potentially wasted. To address this trouble and make good to players, a pack of three-attribute cards "The Tamriel Collection" is offered as free giveaway for everyone.

Despite a rise of trend in digital card games genre lately, The Elder Scrolls: Legends has failed to stay relevant to fans over time competing with titles like Hearthstone, Gwent, Magic: The Gathering Arena and Shadowverse.

League of Legends May Come to Mobile

Riot Games and Tencent are reportedly working on a mobile version of MOBA sensation League of Legends.

Despite having some internal issues with their workforce currently, developer/publisher Riot Games is still doing well with their popular free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends over Mac and PC platform.

Apparently, Riot Games is collaborating with parent company Tencent on a mobile version of the game for Android and iOS devices. Although it has been in works for more than a year now, we will not see it launching anytime soon in 2019.

Major portion of League player from Western regions prefer to play MOBA games on PC but then there is Eastern market with huge potential for growth, which is mostly leaning towards playing their games on mobile devices.

Those player bases are major target for Chinese corporate giant Tencent Holdings Ltd to develop a mobile version of LoL to grow their overall player count and adding new source of revenue for the game at the same time.

RELATED: Octopath Traveler Prequel Game Coming to Mobile

Tencent has previously worked on a MOBA game titled Honour of Kings for Android, iOS and Nintendo Switch that was re-branded for Western market as Arena of Valor but it failed their expectation of gaining same level of success as LoL.

We can expect that mobile version of League of Legends would probably have gameplay similarities to Arena of Valor. One can only wonder whether or not it would allow PC and mobile accounts to be linked or offer free skins as daily log-in bonuses!
