John Cena for Duke Nukem Film Confirmed

Back in January, we got rumors flying around that WWE superstar John Cena (12 Rounds, The Marine) may play the lead role in upcoming movie adaptation of 90's popular first-person shooter video game franchise Duke Nukem from Apogee Software. Well, we got the confirmation now from producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller that our fan-favorite American professional wrestler is now all set to play the trash-talking protagonist of the film chewing bubblegum.

During the promotion of the film Quiet Place, Form and Fuller opened up about their upcoming video game-inspired project. Making a Duke Nukem movie "a really fun ride" according to him but they have to do the character tone right. They exampled that the way Deadpool managed to pull the character's original comic-book tone in the film, the studio have to do something like that or die trying. Otherwise, the Duke Nukem film is not worth making.

However, just because they are done finalizing the lead actor doesn't mean that they are ready to go. At this point, they don't even have a readied script for the film yet but all involved parties are working on it. Right now, John Cena is locked for the role but there are chances for him to withdraw from the film if he doesn't like the plot. Besides, the franchise has nearly two decades worth of history that produced nine video game titles and a comic book series for the film to live up to.

The video game series adapted Resident Evil movie series has ended in 2016 and spawned six movies during their run. Last year, the live-action Assassin's Creed starring Michael Fassbender and Warcraft movie came out. We already have the live-action Tomb Raider movie from the rebooted franchise on theaters and this seems like a good time for more video game film adaptations. However, voice actor for the character Duke Nukem in video games, Jon St. John seems like the guy who is not at all excited with the film adaptation idea for the series.

Platinum Dunes (A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and Paramount Pictures are currently working to make a Duke Nukem movie adaptation possible with WWE star John Cena on board. After considerable years in acting, Cena is still very selective about his roles. He recently played cameo role in Daddy’s Home 2 and is about to star in the upcoming Michael Bay produced Transformers prequel spin-off Bumblebee: The Movie set to release in late 2018.
