Yakuza Franchise Renamed to Like A Dragon

Planned for a 2024 release, developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and publisher Sega have officially revealed next game in Yakuza franchise, titled Like A Dragon 8 earlier last week that will feature protagonists Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu.

Sega also announces a remake of 2014 series spin-off game titled Like a Dragon: Ishin! for PC as well as major consoles early next year. With that, Sega is rebranding Yakuza series with "Like A Dragon" title for all of their upcoming releases.

Officially renaming Yakuza franchise makes 2020 role-playing game Yakuza: Like A Dragon to be last series entry with Yakuza in its name. Sega wanted to closely align with Japanese name, as it has always been called Ryu Ga Gotoku in Japan.

Yakuza series developer is also named Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, which also means "Like A Dragon" and this change is for future Western releases. Although series fans will still be calling it Yakuza for a while, until they get used to new branding.

Despite being based on Yakuza-themed storyline, "Like A Dragon" would be a right choice since series protagonists Kiryu and Ichiban both has dragon tattoos on their backs, rightfully carrying the dragon symbology throughout entire series.

Yakuza franchise has several games and remakes under its name since 2006 series debut across PlayStation 2 console. According to Sega, overall digital and physical sales for titular series have exceeded over 17 million copies since its launch.
