Grand Theft Auto 4 No Longer Selling on Steam

Over the weekend, Rockstar Games has pulled off selling for PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV on Steam, for now.

Almost like every other game from Grand Theft Auto series by developer/publisher Rockstar Games, 2008 action-adventure title Grand Theft Auto IV has made headlines for controversy and sold out millions of copies over its lifetime.

Most recently, GTA IV has been restricted from purchase for players on PC digital distribution storefront Steam without any prior announcement because the game is not supported on Games for Windows Live platform anymore.

A technical issue arises lately upon Microsoft deciding not to continue supporting a prominent online gaming feature that allowed players to cross-play between PC and Xbox 360 and for which, GTA IV was originally created for.

Now that their service is no longer available, Rockstar Games can't generate keys anymore to sell the game. Currently, they are considering any viable option to digitally distribute Grand Theft Auto 4 on PC once again in future.

Rockstar has released an official statement on inquiry of what made them take such a step all of a sudden.

Grand Theft Auto IV was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTAIV for PC and will share more information as soon as we can.

After a marketplace shutdown notice back in 2013, Microsoft officially discontinued Games for Windows Live a year later. Although it was accessible through Steam, many developers have removed its system integration over time.

Rockstar has made sure that no one can buy a copy of GTA 4 on Steam but a product page is still up there and this latest issue with Windows Live services following its demise will now affect sales of its PC version on similar outlets.

Last year, players faced issues regarding soundtracks for the title and developers stepped in to disable in-game music. Even though many have found ways to avoid losing access to licensed songs, similar treatment may arise for its sequels.

There have also been rumors of a planned remake or remastered version of GTA IV and its expansions to make them playable on modern consoles but it seems like Rockstar is more concerned with Grand Theft Auto VI right now.

Despite its sequel Grand Theft Auto V being one of the best-selling games of all time, there are still many who are in love with journey of protagonist Niko Bellic trying to find his place in Liberty City and would love to keep playing.

New Mario & Luigi Trademark Filed by Nintendo

Nintendo files for a new Mario & Luigi trademark after AlphaDream bankruptcy, hinting at new game.

Back in October 2019, acclaimed Mario & Luigi role-playing video game series developer AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy and many assumed that their long-time publisher Nintendo would not probably continue the franchise as well.

According to recent reports, Nintendo has filed a new trademark for Mario & Luigi series that clearly suggests that they have plans to release more titles from the RPG series in near future, most likely for Nintendo Switch console.

They went on to develop seven more games for the same publisher to release on Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS. AlphaDream has also worked on Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 for Switch last year.

Upon closure of the studio, fans were skeptical about future of the series but recent trademark filing for Mario & Luigi name in South America shows Nintendo's clear interest to continue making more games on the RPG series.

Spotted by LetsGoDigital, this trademark is proposed for video games cartridges, memory cards and even phone covers, which lead people to speculate that Nintendo may even develop a title for mobile devices as well as Switch console.

Maybe they are simply planning to do a series of remake of older titles of named RPG series since the Japanese video game company expressed interest of bringing more ports from Nintendo 3DS platform for Switch last year.

It could also be that Nintendo has no intention of making any game for Mario & Luigi series just yet and they are just securing its name. Whether or not they want to make a new game up next, it will not come out at least until 2021.

Xbox Series X Games Will Be Cross-Gen With Xbox One

Microsoft has confirmed that games released for Xbox Series X will also be playable on Xbox One for first few years.

This holiday season 2020, both Microsoft Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment are launching their latest gaming hardware Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 for next console generation with full backward compatibility support.

However, that doesn't mean that current and upcoming games will skip previous consoles. Going a step further, Microsoft ensures that all first-party games for Series X will also be playable for Xbox One for at least two years.

Head of Xbox Game Studios internal development team, Matt Booty has confirmed in a recent interview that all of their games coming out for over next two years will play out on Xbox family of existing and next-gen devices.

In his interview, Matt Booty talked more about their approach to and intended vision for next-gen Xbox console.

Our approach is to pick one or two IP that we’re going to focus on and make sure that they’re there at the launch of the console, taking advantage of all the features. And for us, that’s going to be Halo Infinite, which is a big opportunity. It’s the first time in over 15 years that we’ll have a Halo title launching in sync with a new console. And that team is definitely going to be doing things to take advantage of [Series X].

Halo Infinite was heavily marketed as a flagship title for Xbox Series X and also a cross-gen release for Xbox One. However, it won't be the only one and a select few games will be focused to showcase powerful feature of Series X hardware.

This way, player community of their ongoing titles like Sea of Thieves will get an extended period of support while forthcoming multiplayer online games like Battletoads and Bleeding Edge will be benefiting from extra updates.

Offering cross-generation compatibility is great news for millions of Xbox One owners as they don't essentially have to buy the latest console to play newest Halo game with only downside of playing on a machine that is less powerful than Series X.

Microsoft is preparing themselves for next generation in their own way despite facing heavy market challenge from Sony but staying away from new exclusives to be more favorable to customers compared to PS5 is a really odd strategy.
