Grand Theft Auto 4 No Longer Selling on Steam

Over the weekend, Rockstar Games has pulled off selling for PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV on Steam, for now.

Almost like every other game from Grand Theft Auto series by developer/publisher Rockstar Games, 2008 action-adventure title Grand Theft Auto IV has made headlines for controversy and sold out millions of copies over its lifetime.

Most recently, GTA IV has been restricted from purchase for players on PC digital distribution storefront Steam without any prior announcement because the game is not supported on Games for Windows Live platform anymore.

A technical issue arises lately upon Microsoft deciding not to continue supporting a prominent online gaming feature that allowed players to cross-play between PC and Xbox 360 and for which, GTA IV was originally created for.

Now that their service is no longer available, Rockstar Games can't generate keys anymore to sell the game. Currently, they are considering any viable option to digitally distribute Grand Theft Auto 4 on PC once again in future.

Rockstar has released an official statement on inquiry of what made them take such a step all of a sudden.

Grand Theft Auto IV was originally created for the Games For Windows Live platform. With Microsoft no longer supporting Games For Windows Live, it is no longer possible to generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game. We are looking at other options for distributing GTAIV for PC and will share more information as soon as we can.

After a marketplace shutdown notice back in 2013, Microsoft officially discontinued Games for Windows Live a year later. Although it was accessible through Steam, many developers have removed its system integration over time.

Rockstar has made sure that no one can buy a copy of GTA 4 on Steam but a product page is still up there and this latest issue with Windows Live services following its demise will now affect sales of its PC version on similar outlets.

Last year, players faced issues regarding soundtracks for the title and developers stepped in to disable in-game music. Even though many have found ways to avoid losing access to licensed songs, similar treatment may arise for its sequels.

There have also been rumors of a planned remake or remastered version of GTA IV and its expansions to make them playable on modern consoles but it seems like Rockstar is more concerned with Grand Theft Auto VI right now.

Despite its sequel Grand Theft Auto V being one of the best-selling games of all time, there are still many who are in love with journey of protagonist Niko Bellic trying to find his place in Liberty City and would love to keep playing.

Rockstar Games launcher for PC made its debut nearing end of last year and players are heavily speculating that they simply removed Grand Theft Auto IV from Steam and other digital platforms to add the title to their own launcher.

Crackdown 2 Developers Working on New Rockstar Game

Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games is hiring talents to reportedly work on new project for Rockstar Games.

British video game developer Ruffian Games has made a name for themselves in video game industry after working on Xbox 360-exclusive action-adventure game Crackdown 2 back in 2010 for publisher Microsoft Game Studios.

After rumors starts flying about developer/publisher Rockstar Games having multiple new games in development and confirmed by a former employee, it is revealed lately that Ruffian is involved in one of their upcoming projects.

Following their successful stint on second installment of Crackdown series, they contributed to Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Crackdown 3 multiplayer mode Wrecking Zone this year alongside several other projects.

Their job listing on official site is looking to hire talents for a few positions for multiplayer action games including roles like senior engineer, senior gameplay engineer and UI engineer but no mentions for Rockstar Games are found there.

However, they recently retweeted an article shared by Scottish Games Network that mentioned about working on games for Rockstar.

Both Rockstar and Ruffian are Scottish companies and the latter is comprised of former developers of Grand Theft Auto series. These are some relatable factors for starters that make their partnership great and meaningful.

There is no clear indication of what they will be working on though except for their "multiplayer action games" title will be for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and "future platforms", meaning upcoming PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett.

Rockstar made huge bucks from their 2013 action-adventure title Grand Theft Auto V, which is one of the best-selling games of all time. In 2019, they brought home more cash from Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Redemption 2.

They may or may not be working on long-anticipated game Bully 2 and possibly an online multiplayer mode for it. Their plan of working on games for next-generation consoles as well as current platforms doesn't mean much either.

There was rumor of Grand Theft Auto VI being a PS5 launch title featuring a female protagonist and an even bigger map than GTAV. Before Rockstar released GTA5 on PS4 and Xbox One, they brought the game on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 first.

Since GTA6 is likely to be a much larger release than any of their previous games, Rockstar Games may not bring their next project to older platforms and despite their vast resources, has recruited Ruffian Games for additional support.

Grand Theft Auto V Court Ban on Cheat Mods

Court issues order for Take-Two Interactive to ban any program used for illegal mods and cheating on GTA.

It has been five years since controversial action-adventure video game Grand Theft Auto V has been released and by now developer/publisher Rockstar Games have seen a lot success including the game doing extremely well in terms of sales and had their fair share of debates. The latest piece of quarrel is regarding a court order to shut down illegal mods that allow players to perform cheats in GTA V and Grand Theft Auto Online when playing the PC version of the game.

A Georgia resident named David Zipperer has been selling two mods by the name Absolute and Menyoo for some time now. Back in March, Rockstar Games has sued Zipperer with an allegation of infringing their copyright properties and violating terms of use of the game. The preliminary injunction won by parent company of the developers of GTA V, Take-Two Interactive bans him from selling those two mods and forbids creating any more unoriginal works for the title.

What Absolute and Menyoo does is allowing players to alter a several number of in-game constraints, which makes the devs unhappy and uncomfortable. For single-player version of the game on PC, these mods are still available on various other hosting. However, it costs money when you try to use them GTA Online, multiplayer mode of GTA V. The mods will allow anyone to generate nearly unlimited amount of in-game currency that Rockstar Games sells to people for real money.

It hurts the developers because; this move has taken a significant toll on the quarterly revenue of Take-Two following the launch of GTA Online in 2013. They complained that mods created by Zipperer had cost them a minimum of $500,000 while damaged their reputation to legit players who couldn't keep up with cheaters and eventually quit playing after a time. Reportedly, upon receiving threat of taking legal action from Take-Two, makers of those mods had shut down their sites.

Grand Theft Auto V is Most Profitable Entertainment Product Ever

Developer Rockstar Games' action-adventure title Grand Theft Auto V is always on discussion whether how awesome it is to players or how it creates controversies every now and then. This week, GTA 5 is announced as the most money-making entertainment product of all time. Meaning, Rockstar’s crown jewel has earned more bucks in overall than any other books, movies or video games out there from any given franchise.

When the game was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2013, it initially became notorious for its violent contents but fans of the series loved it. Following year, GTA 5 made it to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles before it debuted on PC after another year in 2015. Since depicted violence in video game sells well, GTA 5 quickly gained recognition for being one of the most successful titles of the series regardless of how much criticism it got.

Whereas many games tend to die after a certain period, Grand Theft Auto 5 somehow managed to keep constant pace at the market and slowly climbed to top. Instead of burning out, GTA 5 always maintained to be on best seller listings. Despite many brand-new titles entering the competition, it never fell back too far in all these years but instead took back their rightful top spot in sales charts every once in a while, which made it one of the most-wanted games ever.

If you look at those impressive numbers GTA 5 has bagged, you will be astound thinking what a giant it has become to overshadow every other media out there. This controversial single title has earned more than $6 billion in total by selling over 90 million copies till date. Movie phenomenon like Avatar, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Titanic has fall behind in line compared to its earning. Not even Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 or any single game from Nintendo's Mario series comes any closer in terms of their selling units.

Gang violence, misogynistic views towards women and many in-game torture scenes made it face harsh criticism for past five years. Even a lawsuit claim from Hollywood celebrity Lindsay Lohan (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls) for her likeness for a parody character named Lacey Jonas was filed but ultimately rejected by court. People who thought these aspects would sink the game have later came to realize that it actually fueled overall sales for Rockstar’s controversial title.

Truth is, the single player open world of the game is incredible and players really loved its online multiplayer mode. Now this is an aspect in any games that keeps steady numbers of fans hooked to a game and developer Rockstar Games made sure they do that by providing them regular supply of new contents. Even though some GTA-lovers may disagree on this one being the best GTA game of all time, it sure succeeded to outrun its predecessors and that is impossible to ignore.

We also cannot overlook the fact that this market supremacy of GTA 5 may come to an end sometime in the future if developers shift their interest in some other titles and prioritize their attention to new projects. Later this year, Rockstar will be releasing their Western-themed action-adventure Red Dead Redemption 2 and if it is able to successfully live up to the original game, then there is more business for studio. Still, keeping up with Grand Theft Auto 5 will be a wise idea as it can grind some more juice for the makers.

Lindsay Lohan's Grand Theft Auto V Lawsuit Rejected

Problem celebrity Lindsay Lohan (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls)'s lawsuit against the developer studio of action-adventure video game Grand Theft Auto V; Take-Two Interactive has finally came to a conclusion. It was about unauthorized using of her likeness for a parody character in the game. Lohan’s civil claim regarding the issue about a game character "Lacey Jonas" against the developers finally ended in highest court of New York state.

Take-Two Interactive has developed the character of Lacey Jonas for the purpose of appearing only in Grand Theft Auto V in-game event called "Escape Paparazzi". According to her back-story, Jonas had an overnight rise to fame which made her a focus for media and sensational magazines. All of which are very similar to Lohan’s troubled personal life. Initially, portrait s of Lacey Jones was heavily featured on promotional art for GTA 5, box covers and discs.

When she took the matter to court back in 2014, publisher Rockstar Games claimed it a total publicity stunt on her part. The court however, gave her a motion for a dismissal in 2016 after it was thrown out initially and then the case moved forward with her claim. Now this was quite a victory on her favor considering her notorious status as a public figure lately. A judge of New York Supreme Court ruled out against Lohan’s claim against Take-Two. On March 29, the state’s appellate division has publicly stated the decision by the Court of Appeals.

The subject in question was whether to take GTA 5 character Lacey Jonas as “portrait” of actress Lindsay Lohan under New York State’s privacy laws as she claimed that likeness of her portrait was featured in the promotional materials of the alleged title of Rockstar Games and they did it without her written consent of any kind. The ruling declared that "The portrayal of Lacey Jonas is a satirical depiction of a modern beach-going woman, which simply doesn't identifiable as complainant".

“The characterization of Lacey Jonas in GTA 5 was indistinct, satirical representations of the style, look, and persona of a modern, beach-going young woman that are not reasonably identifiable as plaintiff.”
Also in accords to Civil Rights Law sections 50 and 51, video character may bear resemblance to looks and persona from images or video footage. In other words, Lacey Jonas is not a direct portrayal of Lindsay Lohan, so she can't sue neither Take-Two Interactive nor Rockstar Games for it. Take-Two Interactive is a parent company for Rockstar Games, who are responsible for the creation of one of the best-selling video games of all time, Grand Theft Auto 5.

Lindsay Lohan's Grand Theft Auto V Lawsuit Goes Forward

New York Supreme Court judge rules that Lindsay Lohan's lawsuit against Grand Theft Auto V can move forward.

Popular action-adventure title Grand Theft Auto V from developer/publisher Rockstar Games is more than just a mere video game franchise. It is an embodiment and a collection of an entire genre of video games. The arrival of the game has been celebrated all over the world even after facing a setback in the survival of a motion to dismiss a lawsuit from actress Lindsay Lohan (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls) alleging the unauthorized use of her likeness to an in-game character Lacey Jonas.

The box cover, disc and other promotional art featuring this character in a bikini is also an unauthorized use of her animated self without her consent as Lohan claims.

She also stated that there is a name rhyme between hers and the character in question, alleging that has been intertwined in the storyline is also a similarity to her as an actress with blonde hair, who fast rose to fame and had a checkered history as a public figure. So, presenting her likeness in a game is equal to use her appearance without her permission. Lohan lost another lawsuit against popular rapper Pitbull over a rap lyric previously from one of his hit song three years back.

New York State Supreme Court judge Joan Kennedy has allowed the case to proceed against Take-Two Interactive, parent company to Rockstar Games without commenting on the merit of Lohan's claim. Kennedy also mentioned that Take-Two's defense that the images in question don't depict Lohan and resonating as works of satire could not be taken into consideration at this stage. The alleged party however, sees this lawsuit as a ridiculous attempt of a publicity stunt from the notorious actress, questioning its legal merits.
