Resident Evil 2 Remake Celebrates First Anniversary

Capcom is celebrating first anniversary for Resident Evil 2 Remake by sharing key-moments of game development.

Only a year ago, survival horror genre got its long-due remake of an original PlayStation classic title Resident Evil 2 by Japanese developer/publisher Capcom on all major platforms with amazing reception after years of fan pledging.

A zombie-ridden Raccoon City was built from ground up for protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield to step in. Familiar menacing faces like Mr. X. and a mutated William Birkin made their most-anticipated return as well.

Now these days, almost every other fan-favorite game is being remade and we are even getting a Resident Evil 3 Remake in months but RE2 will always be one of the finest examples of how a studio should approach things for such projects.

From official announcement by Capcom to its first trailer reveal on E3 2018, enthusiasm for this 1998 classic from fans has been immense. Going back to a redesigned RPD Police Station was a major trip to nostalgia lane for many players.

On one year anniversary of the game, art director Satoshi Takamatsu, composer Shusaku Uchiyama, director Kazunori Kadoi and producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi sat together recalling memorable moments from development.

Always been hearing from players of a remake, entire dev team struggled to figure out where to begin groundwork for reinventing an all-time classic like Resident Evil 2 and that time finally came a few years later when they were ready.

It even took some time for Capcom to come up with their "We Do It" announcement back in August 2015 as soon as they got this project greenlit because of their excitement and a relevantly small team begins development immediately.

As soon as they had their eyes on initial visuals of how gameplay will work with a shooting test on zombies and how their limbs can be taken off with precise gunshots, director Kazunori knew that this new design is special and would work.

Since a legion of players worldwide has already been devotees of original RE2, their biggest challenge in working was to stay true to its fundamental aspects while keeping things fresh and not to fail short on people's general expectation.

Art director Satoshi Takamatsu looks back at redesigning iconic characters as rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy, who made his series debut. His look, police outfit and other accessories are touched up, leaving shoulder pads behind this time.

In case for college student Claire Redfield, slight changes are introduced to her original design to keep them modern yet realistic. Her love for bikes earned her a Harley-Davidson FXSTB Night Train and a redesigned red biker jacket.

Another prominent debutant mercenary Ada Wong posing as fake FBI agent has gone through more than a few rendition of her attire before settling on trench coat and dark glasses before taking six months to finalize her face model.

Rather than being a cute little girl, Sherry Birkin got a bit of depth in her character than just a design upgrade. Same thing goes for her parents, Annette and William Birkin, who were former researchers for Umbrella Corporation.

From his entry scene to general design, the T-00 model Tyrant known as Mr. X has received his most striking form ever. His nigh-invulnerable nature in RE2 Remake and heavy footsteps has been reasons for players to be scared of him most.

Composer Shusaku found his challenge in creating new score and sound design that would be a worthy improvement over original. Going back to the vibe of two decades back was not easy though but it was a memorable experience for them.

Director Kazunori admits not expecting to see an overwhelmingly positive response on E3 booth following official reveal, despite being just a remake of an old game and believes this is what has kept them on their toes to make RE2 great.

RELATED: Resident Evil Becomes Capcom's Best-Selling Franchise

Producer Yoshiaki remembers throwing a big party once Resident Evil 2 has gone gold and noticing each team members having an expression of an achievement that has finally lead them to that point of completion after so long.

All the hard work from every member of Capcom development team has paid off when Resident Evil 2 Remake received critical-acclaim from both critics and fans, selling over 4.7 million copies within a month as well.

This way, player community of their ongoing titles like Sea of Thieves will get an extended period of support while forthcoming multiplayer online games like Battletoads and Bleeding Edge will be benefiting from extra updates.

Offering cross-generation compatibility is great news for millions of Xbox One owners as they don't essentially have to buy the latest console to play newest Halo game with only downside of playing on a machine that is less powerful than Series X.

Microsoft is preparing themselves for next generation in their own way despite facing heavy market challenge from Sony but staying away from new exclusives to be more favorable to customers compared to PS5 is a really odd strategy.

This show will take place from February 6 to 9 and the dark fantasy title will be showcased during presentation by Sony. Although attendees won't be able to get a hands-on playing experience, a new footage will likely to get revealed.

At this point, people have no solid idea of what to expect from latest title of Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. Nevertheless, everyone is excited to see From Software attempting to explore open-world genre for very first time.

In September 2019, a leaked listing from Target retail chain suggests the game has a release window set for June 2020. Most recently, From Software official site has reaffirmed the same date on a New Year card, making it more obvious.

Elden Ring has been under development from 2017 right after Dark Souls III final DLC, The Ringed City was released. Given their past record of shipping games quickly, a release date set for this year will not be very much surprising at all.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Won't Have Mercenaries Mode and Multiple Endings

Upcoming Resident Evil 3 will not include Mercenaries Mode and multiple endings like 1999 original title.

We are only less than four months away from release of upcoming highly-anticipated survival horror game Resident Evil 3 Remake from developer/publisher Capcom for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 3, 2020.

Although RE3 is a remake of original 1999 game, it will undergo a few makeovers than last year's Resident Evil 2 Remake. A few features like fan-favorite Mercenaries mode and multiple endings will not make it to final version.

When news surrounding RE3 Remake has first emerged online, many fans assume to see return of Mercenaries mode but that hope is shot down in an interview with Capcom producers from recent issue of official PlayStation Magazine UK.

There were several unique endings in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, which would often occur when players would follow different paths willingly or sometime forcibly but developers bailed out on that as well in favor of a definitive main story.

Upon completion of RE3: Nemesis story mode, a mini-game mode titled "The Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal" would eventually unlock and task players to complete a bunch of objectives throughout Raccoon City in set time.

Players could take control of one of Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service members Carlos Oliveira, Mikhail Victor and Nikolai Zinoviev. This is more like an extended version of bonus modes from RE2 featuring HUNK and Tofu.

In latest reimagining of a classic, they are cutting off Mercenaries in favor of its asymmetrical multiplayer mode Resident Evil: Resistance that lets four players to take part as survivors against a fifth one taking role of a Mastermind.

This character can pit survivors into traps and send zombies or Mr. X after them to stop them from getting away. Revealed earlier in a glitch, Umbrella scientist Annette Birkin will also be a playable Mastermind with her ultimate being G-monster.

Despite not being explorable as an open-world game, you will be able to explore city hospital, shops and streets in RE3. At one point, Jill will find herself into Raccoon City sewer system and come across returning enemies like mutant worms and such.

Other than being completely redesigned in a new avatar, Carlos Oliveira will be playable for an extended level than his original run. His role in getting a cure of T-virus from hospital will most likely be prolonged in latest iteration of the game.

Also, main antagonist character Nemesis would be based on model of Mr. X from RE2 but will receive an improved version of AI. Developers have created a lifelike version of the Tyrant monster to scan it using photogrammetry tech.

Unlike earlier, his appearance is not scripted or restricted on Raccoon City Police Department corridors anymore. Instead, he will now out without a leash and roaming around seeking for his primary target, former S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine.

Compared to brand-new online experience Project Resistance within Resident Evil universe, Mercenaries mode had significantly less content to work on and old-school RE3 fans who likes to play alone would surely miss it a lot.

Although Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil 3 doesn't offer much gameplay depth, it still is an enjoyable experience with nostalgic value. Therefore, getting rid of this unlockable mini-game from its remake actually makes less sense.

Doom and Doom 2 Gets 60 FPS Support

In a latest update, Bethesda adds 60 FPS, quick saves and add-on support for classic Doom games re-releases.

In a rather surprising move, classic first-person shooter games Doom, Doom II and Doom 3 were re-released back in July 2019 during keynote events of QuakeCon for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Even though they were well received, these games were not without some shortcomings in terms of save functions and visuals but a recent update from publisher Bethesda Softworks has attempted to address them on all platforms.

To help out many enthusiastic speedrunners and survivors of Nightmare difficulty, Quick Save has been enabled. At any point, pause the game and start instantly from your Load Game using L/L1/LB buttons depending on your platform.

Add-on feature will enable players to enjoy additional content, which are free to download. Community episodes and megawads for these games from a curated list will be included, with more coming soon based on fan feedback.

This update also offers original campaign SIGIL by Doom co-creator and renowned designer John Romero along with two map packs TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment that came out on launch of Final Doom back in 1996.

Moreover, expected features like Aspect Ratio, Brightness options, improved Level Select function, performance optimization, quality-of-life adjustments, Quick Weapon Select feature and split-screen HUD are newly added as well.

Aside from reviving old-school titles of Doom franchise, Bethesda is working with developer id Software on a sequel to 2016 series reboot titled Doom Eternal that is currently scheduled to arrive on March 20, 2020 for all major platforms.
