Jon Bernthal Wants to Star in Punch-Out Movie

The Walking Dead actor Jon Bernthal would be interested to play Little Mac in a possible Punch-Out movie adaptation.

After his rise to fame for playing the role of Frank Castle in Netflix web TV series Marvel's The Punisher, actor Jon Bernthal (Fury, The Walking Dead) has played a part on tactical shooter game Ghost Recon: Breakpoint from Ubisoft.

Bernthal was recently asked which video game character he would like to portray on-screen if he is given the freedom of picking his favorite and he choose Little Mac from popular Nintendo boxing game series Punch-Out!!

After his latest appearance in Breakpoint as primary antagonist character Cole D. Walker, Jon Bernthal sat down on an interview where he was asked about what other role from video game world he would like to portray next.

He then expressed his love for '80s and would love to step into the shoes of iconic tiny boxer Little Mac from classic NES console since he has been playing Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! a lot these days with kids on Nintendo Switch.

Bernthal also spoke on how Mac's story of an underdog rising through appeals to him for an on-screen portrayal.

What I've been playing with the kids is Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. Little Mac, he's really small, but that would be really cool I think his rise up through the ranks.

Even though he is not all caught up with many current gen games, the actor stated that he will be interested in a Castlevania project if there is one aside from current animated series and expressed his love for old-school arcade title like Galaga.

Although adaptations of video game properties into live-action media often turn out to be huge disappointment, ventures like Detective Pikachu and Netflix's Castlevania have managed to change that landscape in recent years.

Despite a Punch-Out movie release being a too ambitious of an idea at this point, writers of Detective Pikachu movie are seemingly interested for a live-action movie adaptation of crossover fighting game franchise Super Smash Bros.

Considering Little Mac is a veteran playable character in SSB series, there are chances for Bernthal to live his dream and shine as the boxer whenever interested parties will come forward to make that movie a reality.

The short length trailer opens up with a boy and girl from another successful Nintendo franchise Splatoon, engaging in a paint- shooting. As their battle become more intense, suddenly the world around them goes black and the girl looks around confused. A huge fiery Smash Bros. emblem is seen on the horizon and silhouettes of the possible fighting characters can be seen with Link and Mario. The Inklings from Splatoon are much likely to join the battle this time.

Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series is renowned for assembling various popular characters like Link, Mario and Samus from their fan-favorite titles. Back in 1999, they brought these famous characters together for an all-out brawl to create one of the most successful crossover-fighting game series ever. Protagonists of other third party games like Bayonetta, Mega Man, Metal Gear, Pac-Man and Sonic the Hedgehog also joined the rumble in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

So, it was only fitting when the Super Smash Bros. game finally finds its way to the Nintendo Direct announcement lately.  Now what everyone has been debating about after the trailer is that if the new game is going to be an original title for Switch or just a port version of 2014 Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. If we consider the failed history of Wii U to deliver successful games in the past, then it probably is going to be an enhanced port for Nintendo Switch.

Even though it doesn't fall into the same stereotype of every other fighting games out there, Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. is undoubtedly one of the most popular of them all. The game was originally released for Nintendo 64 back in 1999. Even though the source of this reported rumor is unofficial but the admins of ResetEra forums have a track record of having inside knowledge of many events of the industry in the past. Then again, it makes sense because Nintendo Switch has been an amazing success in the market and Super Smash Bros. has accomplishments like being the fast-selling Wii U game by beating Mario Kart 8 under its belt. So, making an enhanced Switch port for the game only makes sense.
