Resident Evil Becomes Capcom's Best-Selling Franchise

With an overall sales number of 90 million units worldwide, Resident Evil has become Capcom's best-selling franchise.

Without any scope for doubts, Resident Evil is one of the most popular video game series that developer/publisher Capcom has ever worked on, establishing the genre of survival horror and made a hit franchise out of it over the last two decades.

RE franchise of games have also set a track record of great commercial success by selling millions of copies worldwide each time the company releases a new installment and now that has officially amassed a whooping total of 90 million units.

When the Japanese video game developer initially started working on original Resident Evil back in 1996, they were not sure how successful their reinvention of Sweet Home would turn out to be but never expected it to be a best-seller.

The company was so impressed by its success that they started developing a sequel just after a month. Although they developed and scrapped an early version after completing 60% of the game, Resident Evil 2 eventually became an instant classic and even bigger hit.

In 2005, Capcom took a more action-oriented approach with Resident Evil 4 but after realizing how far they have moved from the core survival elements, the studio took a detour to roots of horror by launching Resident Evil 7 in 2017.

Till date, both Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 remains the best-selling games of RE franchise by selling over 11 million and 8.8 million copies worldwide respectively over various platforms despite garnering mixed reactions from critics and fans.

Recently released Resident Evil 2 Remake has already shipped over 4 million physical copies and gaining critical acclaim from almost everyone, helping Capcom to surpass an impressive 90 million copies sold from its entire series and becoming their best-selling franchise.

This definitely has the developers renewed their interest with RE games with more seriousness and hopefully they will easily cross 100 million mark with the release of upcoming Resident Evil 3 Remake, followed by Resident Evil 8.

Although Resident Evil games have found a larger audience on PC and modern day PlayStation and Xbox consoles, many of the classic RE titles saw release on Nintendo's handheld Game Boy Color consoles from 1998 to hybrid console Nintendo Switch.

Resident Evil Movie Reboot to Be Based on Resident Evil 7

Screenwriter Greg Russo revealed that he took inspiration from Resident Evil 7 for the script of Resident Evil movie reboot.

Long before the Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs. Predator, Death Race) directed and Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Ultraviolet) starrer Resident Evil movie franchise ended with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, there was announcement for a series reboot.

Although Anderson is not returning to direct again, Constantin Films are handling the project with screenwriter Greg Russo readying drafts and to be directed by James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring), which could be a delight to horror fans in general.

Russo has recently opened up in an interview about his writing process and how he took inspirations to follow Capcom's lead to re-inventing the series. One of the main aspects of that motto is to go back to the roots of horror in the first place for him.

For me it was very clear cut that I wanted to go back and make it scary again like a horror film in terms of the classic James Wan style so that was the pitch, going back and looking what made the games scary in the first place so yea Resident Evil 7 was a bit of a touchstone for my draft.

For years, fans have been complaining about the RE movies from director Anderson for moving far from the horror and making over-the-top action flicks. What they cannot deny that whether or not they were crappy movies, they made a ton of money and thankfully came to an end.

Though Russo did enjoy the films, but he believes that RE franchise has always prioritized the elements of horror first and then focused on action. And that is why; he chose to take writing inspiration from the terrifying 2017 game.

He would personally love to see a Resident Evil film made in Texas Chainsaw Massacre-style and centered on Baker Family. Then he wants Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to jump in the middle as Chris Redfield and punch boulders for the ending scene.

Greg Russo has already handed over his draft to Constantin Films and looks like they are pretty content with what he came up with. James Wan is also producing the Resident Evil movie reboot and we expect him to come up with his classic style of horror.

Resident Evil 7 Hits 5 Million Sales

In an official press release, Capcom revealed that their first-person survival horror game Resident Evil 7 has recently reached 5.1 million units of sale. This was announced after the game is awarded for Best VR Audio during the 2018 Game Audio Network Guild Awards platform. Being the latest installment of the series that came out only a year ago, the figure isn't looking bad but if we consider that, then we are missing an even big picture here.

Crossing a milestone of selling more than 5 million units is a great achievement itself but Capcom had done better than this before with Resident Evil series. What started as a murder mystery investigation at Spencer Mansion leading to a race of survival against hordes of undead and deadly secrets have become a monstrous franchise itself over time. There are already 25 games from Resident Evil series, some awaited sequels and a super-hit series of movies under the name till date.

No matter what people says, zombie games always have their unique appeal to fans and Capcom has proved that over and over. Though Resident Evil 7 is not exactly a game with zombies in it, it still was full of horror elements and managed to bag some critical acclaim. However, some fans have a different perspective on the matter as they believe RE7 has ruined the series, which is still debatable. What we cannot debate about is the sales figure, which points to a different picture.

If you simply break down and compare 5 million units sales figure to rest of the series, you will notice it isn't looking very good now. All is there for you to find out that the first three games of Resident Evil series have even outsold Resident Evil 7, when the franchise was only growing. Resident Evil 5 of 2009 still reigns at the top spot by selling a record 11.84 million copies and Resident Evil 6 from 2012 secured the second best place with 10 million copies sold.

Initially, Capcom had set a goal of 10 million unit sales for Resident Evil 7 and if it falls short by any chance, they will push it. Whereas they failed with RE7, another of their prodigal title Monster Hunter: World has saved the day by becoming Capcom’s best-selling game ever. Now, it can be that there are too many zombie games out there and Resident Evil 7 just couldn't make it by competing with all of them or perhaps, it just failed to charm more audience as they had hoped for.

Resident Evil 7 is released in January, 2017 from Capcom to play on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Later, a Gold Edition was released in December including two story-driven DLC titled "Not a Hero" and "End of Zoe". Just before a year it came out, a virtual reality demo Kitchen was dropped at E3 2016 and it had support for PlayStation VR headset. If Resident Evil series have to thrive, they will have to better prepare themselves to compete with upcoming games like Overkill’s The Walking Dead, The Last of Us Part II and World War Z.

Resident Evil 7 Hits 4 Million Sales

The attempt to re-define the genre of survival horror video game by Capcom was quite successful and we can tell that by the response of fans and critics over the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Another news on the horizon is that the game has just sold over 4 million copies recently. Despite being a great number, it fails to please the developer and publisher studio. Now this landmark of reaching 4 million unit sales of Resident Evil 7 was set by Capcom earlier this year and looks like they have just reached their target already.

resident evil 7 eveline
Resident Evil 7 Sells 4 Million Copies

However, they expected to cross the mark a bit earlier than it has. Because, they made assumption before launch that the game will sell an estimate of 4 million copies within a very short time after its release and it actually took nearly seven months for Resident Evil 7 to do that. When Resident Evil 7 shipped 3.5 million copies on release, they took this as a sign of a solid start and then it kind of slowed down.

The actual estimate made by Capcom was a total of 10 million copies for a lifetime but given the fact that while they earned critical acclaim for re-inventing the series with RE7, this move from Capcom has also made a lot of old Resident Evil fanboys upset. This doesn't essentially made the game a flop one but the way they have revamped the world of Resident Evil as we knew it, plus a new way of game-playing along with several DLC to expand the game even further calls for a bit more revenue stream to be honest.

Another reason for Capcom's disappointment could be the fact that the previous installment of the franchise; Resident Evil 6 managed to sell a total of 4.8 million copies and that was actually a lot worse game compared to this one. Still, there are hopes for them to reach their estimate 10 million unit sell as the overall life-cycle of games have significantly expanding these days. Plus, a great number of players go for digital download and those numbers are greater than the ones who buy game disks.

Resident Evil 7 'Not a Hero' DLC Gameplay Video

Ethan Winters have made it out of the Baker family with his life and there are still some mysteries that left unanswered. So, it's time for a specialist to go in and who better is well equipped to take care of monster business other than Chris Redfield. Of course, the guy is no more bulky and extra muscular to punch out a boulder but throw a monster on his face; he'd still punch his way out on its face.

Capcom has recently dropped a video of the gameplay from upcoming 'Not a Hero' DLC for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and here is your chance to take a good look at the clip.

This first-look of how 'Not a Hero' DLC will let us face the mold monsters inside the abandoned dungeons of the plantation area as Chris Redfield. Redfield is an expert BOW hunter and he has no time to hide. He will kick his way ahead like a badass we know him as. Since the pack is set after the main game, you won't probably be seeing any of the Baker family members but it will reveal many important aspects of the story you've been worried about.

After Resident Evil 7 came out, many players of the game was complaining about not being able to play as one of the fan-favorite characters of the series. So, when Capcom announced of a DLC where we will be able to control Chris Redfield and kick some serious butt of all the new monsters of the series, it was a moment of rejoice for us all. Though this version of Chris doesn't look like anything that we can relate to, he still is an efficient monster hunter.

The DLC got delayed during development and the studio apologized for this to the fans. Now it is finally coming out as a free game pack on December 12, along with another called End of Zoe, which by the way will not be free of charge of course. Both of these DLC packs will be available with the Resident Evil 7: Gold Edition also coming out on the same day.
