Valve releases new gameplay footage of upcoming VR game Half-Life: Alyx, showing off control and movements.

In less than a few weeks, developer/publisher Valve Corporation will be releasing their upcoming flagship VR game Half-Life: Alyx on March 23, 2020 to mark their return in game development after more than 12 years.

Most recently, Valve has released three videos featuring nearly 10 minutes of gameplay footage from HL: Alyx, each showcasing lead character Alyx Vance playing on different environments and implementing various in-game features.

Three different movement styles are highlighted in these videos and one is teleport, which lets you move from one place to another. Continuous is traditional first-person style and shift locomotion style is zooming transition to locations.

Variation to player movements through a blend of shifting and regular maneuver is likely to minimize motion sickness while playing in VR. She even uses gravity gloves to catch grenades thrown at her to return them back to her attackers.

Alyx Vance takes on some Headcrab zombies and took them down by either shooting or using other tools at her disposal. When she entered an occupied City 17, there is a heated firefight between her and a group of Combine soldiers.

In terms of gameplay, HL: A displays its VR interactivity by having Alyx perform set of tasks, work with objects, solving puzzles etc. She is seen removing planks from a doorway and grabbing a car door to use as shield during gunfight.

It seems that fans are not getting their hands on Half-Life 3 anytime soon and have to be content with Half-Life 2 prequel game. Valve is probably using HL: Alyx to revive its iconic franchise to pave path for HL3 release in future.

Half-Life: Alyx will be out on Steam in weeks to play with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Windows Mixed Reality and Valve Index. Players who own Index headsets will get free copies of the game with gun skins and themed content as bonus.

Half-Life: Alyx Release Date

Valve has announced official release date of Half-Life: Alyx, currently set to arrive on March 23, 2020.

In anticipation of release for their upcoming flagship VR game Half-Life: Alyx and to celebrate 21st anniversary of the franchise, developer/publisher Valve Corporation has made Half-Life series of games free-to-play on Steam.

During its official reveal back in November 2019, HL: A only had a set release window of March 2020. Last month, Valve has confirmed finishing development on Reddit and today, a launch date of March 23, 2020 is finally announced.

Although HL: A will not have to compete with a lot of major AAA-titles that has now been delayed from March 2020 launch period to later dates, it will arrive shortly after Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal.

HL: Alyx is spared from struggling against games like Cyberpunk 2077Final Fantasy VII Remake and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. Instead it will go up against a simulation game for Nintendo Switch and a first-person shooter.

VR gaming is currently in dire need of a major success to get people interested and Valve is capable of doing that. Following return to game development after over a decade, Half-Life series creator is ready to reclaim their throne.

In past, industry experts have hyped that virtual reality will be future of gaming but it failed due to hardware cost and a slow start. Valve is promoting Half-Life: Alyx as a landmark VR experience, which is much needed for the platform.

Half-Life: Alyx Finished Development

In a latest AMA session on Reddit, Half-Life: Alyx developers revealed the game is finished developing.

After a decade-long hiatus, Valve Corporation has returned to game developing but not essentially with Half-Life 3. Instead, they are offering players a brand-new VR experience though Half-Life 2 prequel game, Half-Life: Alyx.

During a recent AMA session on Reddit, dev team has revealed new information on HL: A, including the game is already pretty much complete and was worked on by largest development team in Valve history on board.

On previously set time, Alyx team joined fans for an AMA sharing many key-moments and promised that the game will absolutely not be delayed for launch in two months as they are done aside from some tweaking to its final scene.

Hearing that from developers themselves is a huge relief considering New Year of 2020 has seen a series of delay for many AAA-titles. Even Half-Life 2 was delayed for a year and players never saw release of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 till date.

RELATED: Half-Life: Alyx for VR Announced

They also added working with a development team of 80 members, which has been the largest one in history of Valve. Many of them and play-testers within studio have run through entire HL: A for more than once by now.

As they are expected, dev team is currently busy fixing bugs and polishing at this stage they are in to reach their planned release window. Keeping VR features in mind, Valve worked around with accessibility and possible movements.

Gameplay is focused on two-handed play at once but weapons are generally for one-handed use but players can grab them by offhand for steady aim while your other hand will be occupied with flashlight, gravity gloves and interactions.

In terms of game length, Alyx will roughly take as long as it would require to playthrough HL2. Players can of course put a bucket over headcrabs but they will be able to move it as they keep crawling and play-testers reported it as a bug.

Half-Life: Alyx has also changed voice actress Merle Dandridge for its protagonist and replaced her with Ozioma Akagha. Initially, Valve started working with Merle but then decided to approach a different route by the end.

In terms of voicing for a younger Alyx, Akagha makes more sense according to a past statement from designer Greg Coomer. Though it didn't made fans happy, many games have successfully changed voice actors in past for various reasons.

Mainline games of Half-Life series mostly had theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman in lead role, who is silent but deadly. However, upcoming VR-exclusive title will solely focus on his closest ally and recurring character Alyx Vance.

Fans were so excited following official announcement last year that there was a rise in selling of Valve Index VR headsets on a large number in Canada and North America, leading to stock shortages in many stores of those regions.

RELATED: Half-Life Games Will Be Free-to-Play Through March 2020

Though people are not getting their hands on HL3 just yet, at least a return to Half-Life universe is not that bad. Who knows, maybe events of HL: A can eventually bring back Gordon Freeman and make a third installment happen in future.

Lately, Valve has made entire Half-Life series of games free-to-play on Steam until release of Half-Life: Alyx in March 2020. So, you can take this time to go back to catch up to past events before entering the world of Alyx in virtual reality.

In terms of both mainline or spin-off titles, Half-Life 2: Episode Two is the most recent entry in series that came out in 2007 and after a long hiatus, Valve is making a comeback in 2020 with a VR prequel that took place between events of first two games.

Despite interest from many developers, a mainstream release was needed to promote and sell concept of virtual reality to mass audience for years and Half-Life: Alyx might really be that one game that can actually make that happen.

Players will get their hands on games like Doom Eternal, RAGE 2, Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot and Wolfenstein: Youngblood on their scheduled launch date now via Valve's distribution outlet, with possibility of more to join the march in future as well.

Also joining to the bunch later in 2019 is Fallout 76, arguably one of the worst games of 2018 for a series of mishaps including a buggy release and controversies for delivering cheap nylon bags over West Tek canvas duffel bag with its Power Armor Edition.

Many players on PC also decided to opt out from buying the game because of having to play it on official Bethesda launcher that everyone hates. However, a Steam release might finally have some interested customer eventually purchase it after all.

Though Steam is no way a perfect digital outlet at all, PC gamers do have a soft spot for the platform because of their pro-consumer behaviors like having a friendly refund policy and a dedicated forum for customers to help them out in need.

Bethesda letting Valve host their games takes a new turn in ongoing storefront wars between them and Epic. Hopefully, other publishers would consider being more friendly to their customer base on PC in future and will not be greedy for exclusive deals.

Artifact Loses 97% Players

Only two months after its debut, Valve's online card game Artifact has lost over 97% players and still declining.

For the past few years, Hearthstone was dominating the ever growing market of online digital collectible card game genre and Artifact has debuted in November 2018 as an answer to the game from developer/publisher Valve Corporation.

Sure, Valve has a history of delivering huge hits like Half-Life and Left 4 Dead franchise that fans still love till date but sadly for their latest release, not even card game players are showing any interest as it is currently facing a concurrent player drop.

Initially, the game has launched two months ago with a simultaneous players number of 60,740 at that time. By next month on December, it was surpassed by No Man's Sky on Steam and from ever since, that downward trend is showing no sign of stopping.

Seeing an all time low, their playerbase has come down to a drop of 97.5% in just two months after release and ranking at 145 on Steam Charts. Even Valve's first-person puzzle-platform and critically-acclaimed game of 2011, Portal 2 has more players online.

Apparently, the DOTA 2 inspired card game is failing to pick up any interest among players and there are a number of reasons for that. The crown-jewel of online card game is following a free-to-play model, whereas Artifact is charging everyone $19.99 only to buy the game.

However, fans who believed in the developer still took part in the alternative model but when it was revealed that you simply cannot get newer cards without spending real money; it sparked a huge wave of complaints within the community.

In the weeks that followed, it became very clear that Valve is not attracting new players to their anticipated online trading card game. Moreover, many angry people bombed the game's Steam page with negative reviews for their shoddy monetization scheme.

The developer tried to do damage control by adding balance and leveling where one could earn new decks by simply playing which was followed by an update that re-balanced some of the overpowered cards but it didn't help to impress their fallen playerbase.

When Valve finally decided to return into making video games and roped in world-famous game designer Richard Garfield for the development of DOTA 2 based card game experience, people were genuinely hyped but seems like all of it was for seemingly nothing.

Artifact could have possibly made it if they chose to follow a free-to-play system rather than their widely criticized pay-to-play model on top of the staring fee of $19.99 bucks that no other title of the same genre has asked for ever, turning it into one of the most disappointing releases on Steam.

Despite so many good games falling into the trap of "Broketober", the real good ones survived till the end. However, not many of them have seen a good time like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 or Red Dead Redemption 2 and died down.

Aside from the purchase of the base game, Steam also took account of the revenue earned from DLC packs. Though some of the elite on the lists are free-to-play, you can easily find some of the best AAA games of recent times within 33-85% discount for sure.
