Steam Getting Library and Events Update

Long after a UI design leak, Steam is finally getting a huge Library and Events update in September.

As a leading digital distribution platform, online outlet Steam from Valve Corporation has been a top choice for PC players. Nevertheless, it is not surely the perfect store for consumers and can use some overhaul to increase its appeal.

Previously mock-up UI images of upcoming Steam library were accidentally leaked and people have waited long to see it as a reality. Finally, Valve has decided to roll out an open beta for Steam Library on September 17, 2019.

During a close door media briefing before PAX West, the company talked about their future plans for both Steamworks and Steam Labs and various updates to come, planning to officially launch all of these on the same month.

For developers to communicate with their player base, a brand-new Steam Events tool is coming soon as well. From September 4 through 17, new experiment and search tool will arrive that are open for all players to try out.

Following latest update for Steam Library, players will have better tools to have their collection organized and keep up with newest updates. From games you are playing to what your friends are playing, all will be shown at new landing page.

Valve is employing their newest visual layout to help players decide what they might be interested to play next. There is a "What's New" section added to home page that shows related news and updates for games of your library.

Developers can easily utilize this section to promote upcoming activity, free XP weekends or even for live tournaments by curating announcements for their titles to bring back players to an old game that have not played in a long time.

Although Valve has an event system for Steam already but it is next to be forgotten and doesn't work effectively. Developers can now set up new events that will automatically go live on a scheduled time for players to see.

For a broader reach, localization support for other languages aside from English will be added. They can notify players in advance of any oncoming events and then whitelist approved accounts to stream using built-in broadcast support.

Once they create an announcement, it is easy to have them show up at community hub and many other places at once. Players who opt in can get notified via email from developers and restrictions are there from stop abusing events tab.

What used to be a categories tool is now coming as collections feature to better organize your library and sort titles out with drag-and-drop function, genre, hardware support, play state, store tags and combination of other labels.

Whenever you purchase new games from Steam, they will be automatically added to your collection based on your set tags. Players can make a quick access to their preferred types and current groups will be changed into collections.

Steam Lab program went live back in July and has an interactive recommender for highlighting games coming to the platform each month. One of their planned experiments will be ways of new discoverability to promote games.

Valve reached out to indie game developer Ichiro Lambe, who used to make six second-long micro trailers for Twitter and Steam will be interacting with players using micro trailers during search for all games instead of standard images.

Steam will be experiment with more features, filters and an infinite scrolling for search page to let people browse through its catalog. An application called Diving Bell would help you find new games without using your record of playing.

Valve is trying to make game discovery a fun experience so that people don't go through just rows of brand images in store. Therefore, most of these experimental features are planned to be added to Steam platform by the end of September.

Doom Eternal, RAGE 2 and Wolfenstein Comes to Steam

Upcoming titles from Bethesda like Doom Eternal, RAGE 2 and Wolfenstein will be heading towards Steam.

In a heated war between Epic Games Store and Steam, developer/publisher Bethesda is apparently taking a stand against the former and is siding with the latter as they are about to bring some of their most anticipated titles to Valve's platform.

With a recent emergence of Epic Games' brand-new digital outlet, many game developers of the video game industry has sided with them by signing timed exclusives, leaving Steam behind with not much support and then, along came Bethesda.

Ever since Epic Games have launched their very own distribution platforms last year, Valve Corporation is suddenly getting some tough competition and even lost some major AAA-titles to their rivals like Metro Exodus and The Division 2.

In case of the above-mentioned games, developer studios have pulled of their titles that were already announced and available for pre-order on Steam for some time and moved them over to Epic Games Store for a lucrative exclusive deal.

RELATED: RAGE 2: Wasteland Superhero Trailer

Many yet to be released titles like Control, Phoenix Point and The Outer Worlds will also are heading to their store as well. Bethesda decided to pick a side in this waging war of exclusivities and will release some of their renowned franchises to Steam.

Players will get their hands on games like Doom Eternal, RAGE 2, Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot and Wolfenstein: Youngblood on their scheduled launch date now via Valve's distribution outlet, with possibility of more to join the march in future as well.

Also joining to the bunch later in 2019 is Fallout 76, arguably one of the worst games of 2018 for a series of mishaps including a buggy release and controversies for delivering cheap nylon bags over West Tek canvas duffel bag with its Power Armor Edition.

Many players on PC also decided to opt out from buying the game because of having to play it on official Bethesda launcher that everyone hates. However, a Steam release might finally have some interested customer eventually purchase it after all.

Though Steam is no way a perfect digital outlet at all, PC gamers do have a soft spot for the platform because of their pro-consumer behaviors like having a friendly refund policy and a dedicated forum for customers to help them out in need.

Bethesda letting Valve host their games takes a new turn in ongoing storefront wars between them and Epic. Hopefully, other publishers would consider being more friendly to their customer base on PC in future and will not be greedy for exclusive deals.

Artifact Loses 97% Players

Only two months after its debut, Valve's online card game Artifact has lost over 97% players and still declining.

For the past few years, Hearthstone was dominating the ever growing market of online digital collectible card game genre and Artifact has debuted in November 2018 as an answer to the game from developer/publisher Valve Corporation.

Sure, Valve has a history of delivering huge hits like Half-Life and Left 4 Dead franchise that fans still love till date but sadly for their latest release, not even card game players are showing any interest as it is currently facing a concurrent player drop.

RELATED: Steam Top-Selling & Most Played Games 2018

Initially, the game has launched two months ago with a simultaneous players number of 60,740 at that time. By next month on December, it was surpassed by No Man's Sky on Steam and from ever since, that downward trend is showing no sign of stopping.

Seeing an all time low, their playerbase has come down to a drop of 97.5% in just two months after release and ranking at 145 on Steam Charts. Even Valve's first-person puzzle-platform and critically-acclaimed game of 2011, Portal 2 has more players online.

RELATED: Valve Rumored to Develop VR Headset for Half-Life Prequel

Apparently, the DOTA 2 inspired card game is failing to pick up any interest among players and there are a number of reasons for that. The crown-jewel of online card game is following a free-to-play model, whereas Artifact is charging everyone $19.99 only to buy the game.

However, fans who believed in the developer still took part in the alternative model but when it was revealed that you simply cannot get newer cards without spending real money; it sparked a huge wave of complaints within the community.

RELATED: Job Listing Suggests Left 4 Dead 3 in Development?

In the weeks that followed, it became very clear that Valve is not attracting new players to their anticipated online trading card game. Moreover, many angry people bombed the game's Steam page with negative reviews for their shoddy monetization scheme.

The developer tried to do damage control by adding balance and leveling where one could earn new decks by simply playing which was followed by an update that re-balanced some of the overpowered cards but it didn't help to impress their fallen playerbase.

RELATED: Artifact Adds Card Balance and Leveling

When Valve finally decided to return into making video games and roped in world-famous game designer Richard Garfield for the development of DOTA 2 based card game experience, people were genuinely hyped but seems like all of it was for seemingly nothing.

Artifact could have possibly made it if they chose to follow a free-to-play system rather than their widely criticized pay-to-play model on top of the staring fee of $19.99 bucks that no other title of the same genre has asked for ever, turning it into one of the most disappointing releases on Steam.

Despite so many good games falling into the trap of "Broketober", the real good ones survived till the end. However, not many of them have seen a good time like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 or Red Dead Redemption 2 and died down.

Aside from the purchase of the base game, Steam also took account of the revenue earned from DLC packs. Though some of the elite on the lists are free-to-play, you can easily find some of the best AAA games of recent times within 33-85% discount for sure.

Artifact Adds Card Balance and Leveling

Valve's Dota-based digital card game Artifact has just received its first balancing patch with added features.

For long, developer/publisher Valve Corporation has been enjoying the success of their multiplayer online battle arena game DOTA 2 and then came up with a digital collectible card game Artifact based on the mythos of the community-created mod.

Debuted earlier on November 28, 2018 for Linux, Mac and PC, the title has been receiving quite an attention from critics and players. The game already got its first balance patch "Build Your Legend Update" for even more intense deck-building fun.

Players can now level up accounts with the newly deployed system, which will let them unlock tickets and card packs down the road. Ongoing card balance has a lot of perks for a digital game and realizing that, the company is just trying to embrace the change.

Valve has originally planned for the model to work like a normal trading card game and decided to ban cards only in emergency situations that calls for such action but they took a month to reach that conclusion. For more details on the changes made, take a look at the Patch Notes.

RELATED: Job Listing Suggests Left 4 Dead 3 in Development?

After evaluating feedback from direct interactions, online suggestions and group discussions among their team members, they collectively decided to be flexible with improvisation. Those who have purchased the affected cards before can sell their cards back to the store within next two weeks.

However, players never expected to see a patch this soon after the launch of the game but it came as a statement from the developer team working on it. While the team was old-fashioned with some cards, they made significant alteration to others.

Even only a few days ago, Artifact was listed among the bottom 10 of the top 100 best-selling games list on Steam and following the update, that place has significantly improved. People are mostly positive towards these new adjustments and hopefully the game is not dying down soon.

Seeing Valve taking such an agreeable approach to modification, we guess that there are more patches coming down for the foreseeable future. Despite the game being innovative, it pushes the player to spend more money and time, which can scare off many newcomers.

Valve Rumored to Develop VR Headset for Half-Life Prequel

According to a series of leaked image, Valve is developing new VR headset for what seems like a Half-Life prequel game.

Before getting into the business of running digital distribution platform for video games via Steam, Valve Corporation used to be the developer studio that Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series of games, none of which got a third installment in nearly a decade.

According to leaked images from online image sharing community site Imgur, Valve is currently working on and soon will unveil their very own VR headset that is completely separate from the HTC Vive gear they are supporting right now.

These leaked images found by UploadVR suggest that the Valve device is still in prototype stage but they are trying to make it equivalent to the HTC display of virtual reality technology that will offer a 135 degree field of view when finished.

They appear to have two cameras and integrated headphones included in it with possibility of adding new "Knuckles" motion controllers. The same source also hinted that this gadget could come out bundled with a brand-new Half-Life game from the company.

Apparently, this one is not the long-awaited Half-Life 3 but a prequel game that would feature the return of Dr. Gordon Freeman into fighting aliens once again. The fictional immersive world Valve built around this game was loved by fans but they decided to continue with Portal series instead.

Although they came up with two more episodes for Half-Life 2, a third game is still stuck at planning stage as it seems. So, we suggest you take any mystery news of a prequel or a brand-new sequel with grain of salt.

Back in March, President Gabe Newell of Valve have announced that the studio is returning back to video game development and they simply are not indicating their upcoming digital collectible card game Artifact by that. The company decided to start shipping games again after developing them.

For years, there were also rumors flying on live-actions movies being pitched for Half-Life and Portal franchise too. With their newly developed VR compatible software and hardware, Valve may come back to dominate the video game market once again.

We even heard about multiple projects on the fan-favorite franchise being pitched or maybe development but never saw a single one coming after Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007. Let's just hope that the rumors turn out to be true this time.

Steam Best-Selling & Most Played Games of 2018

Valve is looking back at the top-seller games, most played and the ones with the most simultaneous players for 2018 so far.

Each year, Valve Corporation unveils a list of the best-selling and most played titles on their digital distribution platform Steam and 2018 is not going to be any different. Also, Steam Summer Sale was nearing its end and gamers ought to know which games are ruling the top charts currently.

Despite seeing a sudden fall in sales for the past couple of months, there are many willing to cash in for their favorite games and the list for best playing games got some surprising and unexpected entries as well.

Few of the top sellers of 2018 starts with games like Jurassic World Evolution, Far Cry 5, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Civilization VI, Rocket League, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rainbow Six Siege, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Grand Theft Auto V and Warframe.

Aside from inclusion of CS: GO, Dota 2, PUBG and Warframe, rest of the entries were unpredictable. Steam has separated these top games into four different categories like Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Open world action adventure Assassin's Creed Origins, Final Fantasy XV, fighting game Dragon Ball FighterZ, turn-based RPG title Divinity: Original Sin II, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Elder Scrolls Online came close topping the list into Gold category.

Considering new sequels from their franchise is awaiting release, Dying Light and Fallout 4 are doing quite well by securing Silver rank, while Rise of the Tomb Raider and The Division managed to enter the Bronze class.

Games that have the most concurrent number of players are according to official report are CS: GO, Warframe, Dota 2, Rainbow Six Siege, PUBG and GTA V. All of the above-mentioned titles are drawing more than 100,000 players simultaneously on Steam.

KC: Deliverance, Rocket League, Garry's Mod, Football Manager 2018, Rust, Civilization V, FC5, Path of Exile, Stellaris, Civilization VI, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Payday 2 comes close with 50,000 players hooking up to it in real-time.

Another thing that stuck on our mind is that cooperative first-person shooter game Left 4 Dead 2 is still generating more than 25,000 concurrent players even after a decade of its release. This clearly states, why Turtle Rock Studios should go ahead with a plan to develop Left 4 Dead 3 for anticipating fan-base.

With Steam offering some huge discounts on popular games, hardcore gamers are barging in on old and new titles, because Valve apparently has something for everyone in their store. At the end of the year, we will see some major entries making their way into the list.

Job Listing Suggests Left 4 Dead 3 in Development?

Teasing to return in 2017 and having players hope crushed, Turtle Rock Studios is probably working on Left 4 Dead 3 for real this time.

Developer Turtle Rock Studios and publisher Valve Corporation have introduced a new horror-movie themed first-person shooter Left 4 Dead back in 2008, which led to a sequel, Left 4 Dead 2 the next year because of immense popularity and has since been on departure for over a decade. Dedicated fans still wonder if a second sequel is going to happen and according to a recent job listing from the developer studios, the long-awaited Left 4 Dead 3 seems like a possibility.

RELATED: Jim French of Left 4 Dead Dies at 89

Apparently, the studio is hiring animator, character concept artist and senior level designer along with a few other categories to work on a "globally known game franchise". They wanted the applicants to have "experience working on competitive FPSs” and “working with modern FPS engines” like Unreal Engine 4, which clearly suggests to L4D. They even mentioned playing Left 4 Dead everyday as part of their game development process and point to be noted, no other game was referenced.

RELATED: Valve Will Stop Policing on Steam

Now these hints could have also pointed to another FPS title, Evolve that Turtle Rock has developed and released in 2015, which was a commercial success then. However, a downward drive to sales and considering publisher 2K Games is shutting down the servers for the game on September, 2018 doesn't seem rational for the creators to invest resources on the project. So, Left 4 Dead 3 being an ongoing project in development by the studio seems a lot logical on retrospective.

RELATED: Steam to Remove Adult Games

A third title from L4D franchise is a long-time fan demand just like development of Half-Life 3, which should be met. If speculations are true based on recently found evidence then we may not have to wait for long to see a third entry to the series. The original game took PC and Xbox 360 by storm while many were also able to enjoy the game on Mac. Then the huge pre-order sale of the sequel had us believe that a trilogy is just ahead but sadly, Valve doesn't believe in that concept.

Now is the time when video game market is over saturated with zombie killing games and even makers of Payday series, Overkill Studios has been up to bringing OVERKILL's The Walking Dead, which clearly adapts the co-op shooter formula from Left 4 Dead. A remake for Capcom's survival horror classic Resident Evil 2 is finally making progress to be released on 2019 as well. All things considered, Valve can make a huge comeback with Left 4 Dead 3 even after failing to do that in 2017 after teasing.

Valve Will Stop Policing on Steam

Valve finally decided to allow everything onto their Steam store, with a few tiny exceptions.

There was a time when we knew Valve Corporation for producing games like Counter-Strike and Left 4 Dead. Today, we know it for developing a digital distribution platform for video games known as Steam. Till now, they were running this stage for developers to showcase their games for consumers to pick them up all from one place and often regulated what types of games should or shouldn't be on the place but that is changing after a recent controversy over their action.

RELATED: Steam to Remove Adult Games

When they took a tough stand against Adult visual novels, many independent developers involved with such projects took it to social media to address their frustration with Valve's policing. In past, they even made many of devs to even censor their content in order to keep it on their platform. However, rather than being appreciated, they were heavily criticized by fans and many, leading them to finally decide to stop watching over for offensive or adult content on Steam.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 May Come to Steam

In their official Blog Post, Valve's executive Erik Johnson stated that, their platform will allow almost every type of content from now on unless it is illegal or with an intent of trolling. That means, they have stopped caring about drawing lines and given up that role to the consumers. However, instead of watching over and control what should or shouldn't be on Steam, they will provide various tools to the users, so that they can decide what sort of contents they are interested in and what they want to avoid.

With this more hands-off approach, Valve now moves away from the debate of their playing role of a moral gatekeeper and allows more freedom to people. They simply explained that, there will always be some developer or games that offend you and think shouldn't exist but that should never take away a game’s voice in a marketplace. Although, the term illegal is considerably easy to define but what exactly constitutes "trolling" is much more complicated than that and leaves room for confusion and debate in future.

Steam to Remove Adult Games

Steam threatens developers of anime-style adult games to be censored or get removed from Steam.

Online dating simulators, video games or visual novels containing adult content are extremely popular on web whether they are free or paid. Of course they are labeled as their type to prevent them from falling into the hands of minors and many indie developers are being drawn towards working on more projects like these. However, Valve’s digital distribution platform Steam has recently issued a warning to a couple of studios regarding adult contents in their games.

steam visual novels nsfw takedown valve
Steam to Remove Adult Games

A couple of developers for visual novel stated in social media that they are being affected by this decision. Two of the most infamous NSFW games HuniePop and Mutiny!! on Valve’s launcher containing some serious nudity are to be mentioned in this case. Developer HuniePot has tweeted out that they have received a notice on e-mail from Valve that their game is currently pending additional censorship for pornographic content in it.

For the time being, HuniePop is still available on Steam store and so is fellow game Mutiny!! Developer studio Lupiesoft of the latter has received same message concerning their content as well. Although, they have worked maintaining strict guidelines and created the game under Valve’s policies, it seems kind of contradictory action for the platform. When their Steam publisher MangaGamer has directly contacted with them, they assured that softcore nudity is allowed. Feeling confused yet?

There are no signs of the game being under threat of removal or something, which was maybe to not alert or frightened the players. The developers received a deadline for 2 weeks, which is basically till the end of this month to either bring change to their subject material or being removed. It appears many other games on the aforementioned platform of visual novel genre are feeling this heat wave now. What baffles us about all of it is that Steam versions of these games are already censored.

steam remove anime style adult games
HuniePop and Mutiny!! To Be Censored

If you are willing then fully uncensored versions of HuniePop and Mutiny!! are available on other retailers or you can just download a patch that will include the explicit parts to the game. This is how many players are having their way with such games because Steam will never allow the developers to share those patches on their platform. Fading these updates are no hard task at all as you can simply do it with a Google search or just go to their developers website looking for it.

Bottom line is, there is a pretty good chance that these two games are leaving Steam very soon and many others will follow. Another thing to notice here is that popular mainstream titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 and The Witcher 3 contains nudity but they haven't faced such aggression yet. Some says that they are only against games with sexual content featuring anime-style art and we cannot rule that possibility out. On the bright side, even though Valve purges these adult games from store, owners will still have them on their libraries.

A community-based mod created by Valve Corporation for Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, that has become the most popular free-to-play multiplayer online game of all-time on Steam with the highest number of concurrent players hooked on (until the recent ground-breaking debut of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds), Dota 2 has already brought revolution in gaming. Dota Plus effectively creates a revolution that literally overthrows Majors Battle Passes and promises regular features and content updates. Majors Battle Passes was introduced back in 2016 which used to bring various challenges on a daily or weekly basis. Dota Plus will do almost the exact similar thing but there will be literally hundreds of challenges and some of them will be hero-specific. The biggest difference is that while Majors Battle Passes were seasonal, Dota Plus is ongoing.

The service is designed to improve your gameplay and performance to help your hero make progress, which is the sole purpose of the new Hero Leveling system. While a certain hero will level up by playing matches and earning level badges, it allows you to earn XP. Upon leveling up, the hero can unlock badges and Shards as rewards. If you complete at least a minimum of three games per week, you can get extra Shards to purchase rewards.

Plus Assistant is a newly featured tool that will suggest abilities, heroes and items for more optimized build. It actually analyzes data from millions of games played recently from all skill levels and helps you choose wisely. The tool also advises you on which hero to pick or which one will be more effective for you based on your playstyle. However, you can always decline the suggestions from Plus Assistant and choose your own course of action.

To keep the negativity out and retain the good vibe among the community, Valve has announced to execute a six-month ban on those who are extremely abusive or needs to learn how to behave in public. Same thing goes for the ones who attempts to cheat in-game. So, you people better stay clear from any sort of cursing to fellow members of the group and try to play your game in a fair way.

The "Last Hit Trainer" on the Learn tab lets you practice last hitting creeps and Dota 2 players are well aware of the significance of last hit creeps for gold as well as XP. Matchmaking process is now based on your selected language to improve communication among the team members. You can also see if the others are prepared to queue using the "Ready Check" button.

Many heroes and items are slightly tweaked or cosmetically changed by lead developer IceFrog in Spring Cleaning 7.08 update. Bug fixes, minor changes and adjustments in gameplay are usually expected when an update goes live. It's not that all the changes should please you or be in your favor but you should keep it mind that they are for the betterment for an improved game-playing experience to a large number of Dota 2 players.
