Horizon Forbidden West Standard PS4 Version Won't Get Free Next-Gen Upgrade

A few days ago, developer Guerrilla Games and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment have revealed details regarding every available editions and pre-order bonuses for upcoming action role-playing game Horizon Forbidden West.

Just as pre-order went live, fans were not happy to learn that owners of PlayStation 4 version of Standard and Special Edition will not receive a free update to PlayStation 5 version of Horizon II and there is no available upgrade path either.

Only people who purchases $79.99 worth Digital Deluxe Edition or more pricey physical bundles will receive both PS4 and PS5 versions. Players who buy a PS4 copy would either have to get a PS5 version or play via backward compatibility.

Sony even clarified their stand in a statement saying that Standard and Special Editions doesn't have dual entitlement. For access to PS4 and PS5 versions of Forbidden West, you have to buy Digital Deluxe, Collector's or Regalla Edition.

Sony also added that they "currently have no plans" to include a way for owners of PS4 version of the game to be able to pay for a separate upgrade just like for Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, which was another controversial decision.

Sony's recent statement regarding Horizon Forbidden West upgrade path seemingly contradicts a previous statement made by CEO Jim Ryan, who claimed that Sony will have an option for PS4 players to get next-gen upgrade on PS5 for free.

Speaking to UK media outlet MCV Magazine in September 2020, Sony CEO Jim Ryan has said the following:

No one should be disappointed. The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It's about people having choice. I'm really quite pleased about the situation.

Players who purchased cross-gen titles like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure at launch was given a free upgrade to PlayStation 5 version and Forbidden West was also promised similar treatment back then.

Earlier last month, players who bought Ghost of Tsushima on PS4 had to spend $29.99 to get an upgrade for PS5 version. However, those who bought Director's Cut have received Iki Island DLC expansion, digital mini art book and lot more.

During previous announcement, there was no mention of any specific title being exempt from a free entitlement to next-gen though. Moreover, their expensive Collector's Editions will feature a steelbook case but not a physical disc copy.

Horizon Forbidden West is currently scheduled to launch on PlayStation 4 and 5 on February 18, 2022. It's still unknown if Sony will change their minds about such shady upgrade path in future and it looks like play has some limits after all.
