PlayStation State of Play May 2019

May 2019 episode of PlayStation State of Play stream features update on anticipated new PS4 releases.

After having their first-ever State of Play broadcast stream back in March, Sony Interactive Entertainment has returned once again with its second episode to showcase announcements for some of the anticipated upcoming PlayStation titles.

Some of these upcoming PS4 games are what keeping everyone on edge of their seats. Compared to their last show, May 2019 is relatively short and straight to the point while also faring a lot better than its first episode in terms of fan-reaction.

Predator: Hunting Grounds | Announced

One of the deadliest creatures from sci-fi action horror genre we came across on movies was undoubtedly big-game hunting Predator that Arnold Schwarzenegger's character Dutch Schaefer has tussled with in 1987 live-action movie.

Now, developer IllFonic is teaming up with 20th Century Fox to bring back that suspense feel of the hunter, who would stalk and kill its prey in upcoming asymmetrical shooter game Predator: Hunting Grounds that will arrive on 2020 for PS4.

Final Fantasy VII Remake | Teaser Trailer

A high-definition remake of action role-playing game Final Fantasy VII Remake is long overdue now that it was announced back in E3 2015 and developer/publisher Square Enix confirmed that it would arrive sometime before 2023.

Newest spectacular look at FFVII brings back a lot of memory and seeing Aerith and Cloud together is priceless. While teasing us with a glimpse for now, producer Yoshinori Kitase promised to reveal more in June, probably in E3 2019.

Monster Hunter: World – Iceborne | Release Date

On December 2018, developer/publisher Capcom announced a brand-new expansion Iceborne for action RPG Monster Hunter: World. This massive content update takes you into a snow-filled territory and of course explores a new story.

Gameplay reveal trailer for Iceborne offers a quick look at some of its new monsters players would be tussling with once it arrives on September 6, 2019. Fan-favorite monster Nargacuga is returning to give many hunters a tough time when they meet.

Also, people were apparently less mad at Sony this time since last time their dislike ratio on the presentation on YouTube was double than likes for no reason that mattered and this time, that ratio has been only half of its overall like count.

What we gathered from second State of Play stream is that many are relatively happy upon receiving update on MediEvil and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Plus, many who were waiting for latest news on MHW expansion Iceborne got some more info as well.

Days Gone Outsold God of War at Launch in Japan

Sales number is seemingly higher for survival horror game Days Gone than God of War at its launch week in Japan.

Although action-adventure survival horror title Days Gone has its fair share of issues with in-game bugs and biased reviews from some major outlets, it has been voted by fans as one of the best new game launched in April 2019.

This latest PlayStation 4-exclusive game from developer SIE Bend Studio and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment has failed to satisfy Western audience at large but looks like, players in Japan loved it even more than God of War.

According to recent reports, the game has sold an overall amount of 114,319 copies in Japanese market on its first week of launch, which is almost three times over for 46,091 units sold by last year's critically acclaimed game God of War.

Of course sales numbers of Japan is not necessarily going to bring major shift in Europe and United States territories but it remains a statement to those who sidelined it as another zombie game and even gave it a tepid review.

RELATED: Days Gone Story Preview

Besides, it became Players' Choice winner for April in an official poll while remaining one of the top downloaded games at PlayStation Store, only behind NetherRealm's newest entry Mortal Kombat 11 and ahead of World War Z.

It may not have been able to keep up the hype initially created after an official announcement at E3 2016 and may not contain a gripping story, Bend Studio is still committed to their fan-base and promised to bring free post-launch DLC in June.

RELATED: Days Gone Free DLC Release Date

Often time players are very critical about technical flaws in major AAA video games, especially when it took a seven year period in development and delayed official release window a few times over before launching on April 26.

Despite its flaws, Days Gone offers you a pretty decent gameplay experience to enjoy a ride with outlaw Deacon St. John in a world ravaged by a global pandemic that turned every infected person into a zombie like rabid creature.

PlayStation Plus Free Games for May 2019

PlayStation Plus free games lineup has picked up What Remains of Edith Finch and Overcooked for the month of May 2019.

For past few months and since the beginning of 2019, Sony Entertainment has been offering some decent PlayStation Plus titles on their free monthly games lineup and we wouldn't want them to break that cycle anytime soon for their monthly subscribers.

PS Plus members had fun times with some action role-playing experience with The Surge and survival game Conan Exiles. Depending on what everyone likes, we have a look at what is up ahead in May 2019 and it looks mediocre at best.

May kicks in with adventure game What Remains of Edith Finch from developer Giant Sparrow and publisher Annapurna Interactive. Its story centers on last member of Finch family, Edith Finch and an old family curse that claimed them all.

General reception towards the title is mostly positive due to a very gripping narrative presentation. Though players have little option to interact with each family member, it offers better experience than many other walking simulators out there.

Our next free game is a cooking simulator title Overcooked by developer Ghost Town Games and publisher Team17. You are tasked to control a number of chefs to prepare meals for customer orders and serve within a certain time.

Of course, you have to go through various kitchen hazards and obstacles while you are at it but that is what makes things interesting. Also, tagging along with up to four friends in a fun co-op play via local multiplayer would be more exciting.

Compared to what PS Plus subscribers were used to get for their bucks up until March 2019, Sony Entertainment has been offering only two games per month instead of six and most of them are indie games, not compatible with everyone's choice.

Now that cross buy feature is gone since Sony has decided to cease support for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita games, regular members are wondering whether or not is it worth to continue their subscription for cheap games.

The Last of Us Part II Wraps Shooting

Neil Druckmann announces wrap up shooting for upcoming Naughty Dog title The Last of Us Part II on Twitter.

Originally announced back in 2016 at PlayStation Experience, action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II remains one of the most anticipated upcoming titles from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment.

We didn't get an official release date yet because the game is still under development but recently, game director Neil Druckmann has announced on social media that motion capture has wrapped up, completing major part of the process.

We know that lead characters Joel and Ellie are returning for this impending PlayStation 4-exclusive that is set five years after The Last of Us but this time the latter will be going through a cycle of violence for personal reasons.

In terms of story, there was a teaser and a trailer that only explores fraction of its entire plot without possibly revealing any major twist. A footage featuring gameplay was released during E3 2018 and it was as brutal as it could get.

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Gameplay Revealed

The Last of Us remains a saga of Joel and Ellie going through a lot of blood, sweat and tears that is very close to Neil. Of course, Baker and Johnson too are similarly attached to this sequel project as well that is heading towards completion.

Druckmann has posted an image of actor Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker on Twitter, pointing to an emotional wrap-up.

Although wrapping up motion capture scenes shooting are major part of development but Naughty Dog still has much work to do for making this much awaited PS4 game a reality, even though it probably is not coming out in 2019.

While waiting for a release date to be announced, we can expect The Last of Us Part II to also arrive on PlayStation 5 following recent revealing of its first details. Besides, PS5 console is going to be backwards compatible with PS4 games anyway.

Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Console Plans

Mark Cerny of Sony outlines what hardware features to expect from next-gen PlayStation console.

Rumors are going around among gaming communities for some time that Sony Interactive Entertainment has been working on next-generation PlayStation console for some time and people are already calling it PlayStation 5 despite any official confirmation.

Apparently, they were working on it for past four years now and most recently, lead system architect Mark Cerny spilled some beans about some planned outlines for the hardware in an exclusive interview with monthly magazine Wired.

Sony plans for their next video game console to be powered by CPU based third-generation AMD Ryzen line of processor and GPU based on Radeon Navi series, a custom variant to support ray tracing and up to 8K resolutions.

Ray tracing allows for simulating complex 3D environments and is common in Hollywood for visual effects. Some companies are trying to employ it for their high-end processors like Nvidia RTX line but no console was able to handle it so far.

Although the method is mostly used for graphical aesthetics of rendering objects more accurately to maintain realism, it can dramatically change audio experience as well, such as enemies being able to hear players' footsteps and all.

Next-gen PlayStation consoles will be using a solid-state drive for utilizing its speedy bandwidth to significantly decrease loading time of games and delivering faster online multiplayer experience than ever before.

RELATED: PlayStation State of Play, March 2019

Also, it will be backwards compatible for PS4 games and comes with PlayStation VR support but Cerny did not drop further details on their future plans for VR yet. Nor did he talk about any services or other features other than hardware specs.

Generally, Sony would have a keynote presentation at E3 in June but since they are skipping the annual game show for this year, our best guess is that any brand-new State of Play episode of their broadcast will most likely do that.

Though developer kits are handed to a number of game studios to work on their upcoming titles, Sony has yet to reveal an official release date for PlayStation 5 and assured that it will not launch in stores within 2019 but we can always wait for 2020.

Kick-starting their mythical journey back in 2005 when Santa Monica rolled in their first installment for God of War, the studio already celebrated 10 year anniversary of this renowned fan-favorite franchise back in 2015.

Then creative director Cory Barlog came up with a vision that would revamp everything about the series by sending Kratos on a journey to fulfill last wishes of his wife and his son Atreus to honor his mother, while building a dynamic father-son duo.

To show their appreciation, a dynamic PS4 theme and a set of character avatar will be made available from this Wednesday, April 17. Regardless of whether you own the game or not, these two giveaway items are free for everyone at PlayStation Store.

Horizon Zero Dawn Sequel Confirmed by Voice Actor

A sequel for PlayStation 4-exclusive title Horizon Zero Dawn is seemingly confirmed by voice actor Janina Gavankar.

Back in February 2019, developer Guerrilla Games celebrated second anniversary of release for their 2017 action role-playing game Horizon Zero Dawn that sold over 10 million copies worldwide to become one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games.

That level of success pretty much guarantees a sequel for this PS4-exclusive but rather than speculating, we have actress Janina Gavankar, who voiced a character named Tatai in Frozen Wilds DLC confirming its existence lately.

Gavankar only replied her back saying,
It's incredible, wait 'til you see the sequel. You're gonna die. I know some secrets! You're gonna die.

Their brief conversation was recorded on camera and Reddit user ninjyte pointed out to that Twitch clip, which has now been removed but since people never forgets anything on internet; we have found access to that moment.

Gavankar has only confirmed that a sequel is indeed in works and her character Tatai from Frozen Wilds expansion is returning as well. It seems that the game is far from completion and probably in some early stage of development.

Even though Sony is skipping E3 2019, they can simply make a grand reveal through one of their upcoming State of Play episode. It can also launch sometime in 2020, same year when PlayStation 5 is also eyeing for release.

Two years have passed and fans are excited to get a HZD sequel in spite of no announcement or anything from Guerrilla Games and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment but there are no reasons for them not wanting to continue making the next game.

Upon release, Horizon Zero Dawn turns out to be one of the most popular new PS4 franchises that surpassed other exclusive titles like God of War, Marvel's Spider-Man and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End on the same platform in overall sales worldwide.

PlayStation Plus free games lineup has picked up The Surge and Conan Exiles for the month of April 2019.

Keeping up a good enough track-record so far with their free monthly games lineup, PlayStation Plus is giving hope to their monthly subscribers to look up for some decent titles to bring by the end of the month and they haven't messed up just yet.

Last month, PS Plus members got their hands on first-person shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and puzzle platformer The Witness. If not matched enough with that, April 2019 is not looking for disappointing you at least.

Before jumping into what we are having on our hand for next month, let's take a quick look at the announcement video.

This month, suit up for some sci-fi action experience in a hardcore role-playing title The Surge by developer Deck13 Interactive and publisher Focus Home Interactive. It paints a dark future of humanity and offers you a lot of exploration as part of gameplay.

You play as protagonist character Warren in a dystopian future where he wakes up after a horrible surgical experience on his first day at work only to find out his entire workplace in ruins and been taken over by revolting robots.

Next up, we have a survival game titled Conan Exiles on our plate by developer/publisher Funcom that is set in the fictional world of Conan the Barbarian. Player character takes on a journey after being rescued from a death sentence by Conan himself.

Each time, a player starts with a character that has nothing but a single piece of cloth and then goes through a customization process of determining gender, voice and even religion before eventually heading on to a vast danger-filled hostile land.

We still have some time to grab onto those two games from PlayStation Plus lineup for March 2019 to pump into some classic FPS action or indulge ourselves within a mesmerizing world of The Witness to have fun solving unique puzzles.

We would also like to note that PlayStation Plus subscribers are now getting an extended cloud space of a whooping 100GB from Sony Entertainment for their saved games, which earlier was a small percentage of 10GB storage.
