Days Gone Outsold God of War at Launch in Japan

Sales number is seemingly higher for survival horror game Days Gone than God of War at its launch week in Japan.

Although action-adventure survival horror title Days Gone has its fair share of issues with in-game bugs and biased reviews from some major outlets, it has been voted by fans as one of the best new game launched in April 2019.

This latest PlayStation 4-exclusive game from developer SIE Bend Studio and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment has failed to satisfy Western audience at large but looks like, players in Japan loved it even more than God of War.

According to recent reports, the game has sold an overall amount of 114,319 copies in Japanese market on its first week of launch, which is almost three times over for 46,091 units sold by last year's critically acclaimed game God of War.

Of course sales numbers of Japan is not necessarily going to bring major shift in Europe and United States territories but it remains a statement to those who sidelined it as another zombie game and even gave it a tepid review.

Besides, it became Players' Choice winner for April in an official poll while remaining one of the top downloaded games at PlayStation Store, only behind NetherRealm's newest entry Mortal Kombat 11 and ahead of World War Z.

It may not have been able to keep up the hype initially created after an official announcement at E3 2016 and may not contain a gripping story, Bend Studio is still committed to their fan-base and promised to bring free post-launch DLC in June.

Often time players are very critical about technical flaws in major AAA video games, especially when it took a seven year period in development and delayed official release window a few times over before launching on April 26.

Despite its flaws, Days Gone offers you a pretty decent gameplay experience to enjoy a ride with outlaw Deacon St. John in a world ravaged by a global pandemic that turned every infected person into a zombie like rabid creature.

To show their appreciation, a dynamic PS4 theme and a set of character avatar will be made available from this Wednesday, April 17. Regardless of whether you own the game or not, these two giveaway items are free for everyone at PlayStation Store.

God of War Prequel Comics

Dark Horse writer Chris Roberson comes up with a prequel story for Kratos, God of War with artist Tony Parker.

The newly rebooted run of mythology based action-adventure game God of War from developer Santa Monica Studio was undoubtedly one of this year's biggest games. The saga is moved from Greek mythology to Norse mythology to establish a new run.

Although that seemingly worked out pretty well for a new setting of this game, there was void left behind that needed to be filled. So, after releasing God of War: The Official Novelization for the title, a four-issue prequel comic series is in works now.

When comic-book writer Chris Roberson (Aliens – Fire and Stone, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. – 1953) from Dark Horse Comics handled the project of creating a prequel this year's PS4 blockbuster, he was intrigued and intimidated at the same time.

Roberson was aware of the new setting of Kratos that has been moved from his previous roots and it surely was a huge task. A story that takes characters from one era or genre and places them into another has opportunities for a lot of development.

A world filled with ice giants and trolls itself is vast enough to throw different obstacles at Kratos in his way to encounter every now and then. Then again, handling such a recognizable and well-established character with a huge fan-following is quite challenging.

To add more to his backstory, both Santa Monica Studios and Dark Horse Comics decided to go with a direct prequel to the new game that will maintain continuity. To start with that itself is a herculean task itself and also an honor.

The story premise follows Kratos after he has left his history with Olympus behind and builds a new life in the remote Norse wilds. Destiny would still find a way to use his rage for fuel of destruction and thus he entangled into troubled he didn't wanted.

When he was trying to save a stranger from being mauled to death by a monstrous bear in the woods, he unintentionally gets into beef with a mysterious cult. Since the former Ghost of Sparta always gets punished for his good deeds, this time seems not to be any different than his bloodied past.

RELATED: The Evil Within 2 Tie-In Comics

Collaborator and artist Tony Parker was a great help to Roberson as well as game director Cory Barlog. During their first conversation, he pitched the basic outline of the plot and then it took some time to eventually bring the story to life.

The first issue from the series is going to be released on November 14, 2018 and the prequel story nicely ties to the emotional journey Kratos go through in the new God of War game. All of this hard work will only pay off when readers will see it for themselves and enjoy the extended take on the saga.

God of War Becomes Fastest-Selling PS4 Exclusive Ever

Santa Monica Studio's legendary action-adventure title God of War sold over 3.1 million units within 3 days, winning players and critics alike.

Two years ago, we learned that a brand-new installment from God of War series is being developed and fans were all very excited. Now that developer Santa Monica Studio and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment finally dropped the new game, not only it achieved huge critical acclaim from everyone in general but it also became very commercial successful title at the same time by selling over 3.1 million units within just 3 days of its release and became the fastest-selling PlayStation 4-exclusive ever.

God of War is launched on April 20, Friday and game’s opening weekend saw millions of dedicated fans lunging on for the title to join Kratos in his latest adventure as he returns to fandom after five long years. This father-son dynamic of Kratos and Atreus truly works it charm for this reinvention of one of most iconic series out there. This truly inspiring support for the game also took it above in ranks among other PS4-exclusives released by Sony till date. This clearly shows that Kratos may have aged but he still packs a punch.

Previously, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End from Naughty Dog came out in 2016 and held record for being a fastest-selling exclusive in North America. This particular game managed to sell 2.7 million copies worldwide but even that took seven days to attain. Another title from their studio, The Last of Us has shipped 3.4 million copies for PlayStation 3 in three weeks. Last year, Guerrilla Games released action role-playing game Horizon Zero Dawn came in with an impressive sales figure of 2.6 million units in two weeks after launch.

In an interview, creative director Cory Barlog revealed that it took him five long years to finish this project and he has figured out plans for five more games of the series, which quickly become news. With Santa Monica Studio's release of the current title, many fans predicted that there would be at least two other installments to explore more from our dynamic father-son duo but no one has saw that coming. So, it will be fun to experience those and we probably won't have to wait five years for each title this time.

Following 2013’s God of War: Ascension, Kratos has returned once again in this year's God of War title, which is also a soft-reboot of the series. Since, he was done with massacring all gods of Greek mythology; he and his son Atreus have established his enmity with Norse gods. The emotional journey that began at the beginning of this game after the death of his wife now becomes another blood feud that has still long way to go.

God of War Ending Explained

At this point we are way past the argument whether to call it God of War 4 or just simply God of War as its developers intended for us to do, because Santa Monica Studio and Sony Interactive did a great job with their semi-reboot of the series with a completely different era for Kratos. The overall setting is changed, gameplaying style has been revamped and a secondary character added to the fold for an all-new take.

Not only Kratos and his son Atreus goes up against gods and mystical characters, we see some deep character bonding among them two. That's a nice way to appeal your game to a newer generation, who will come to appreciate the series the same as veteran fans who grew up playing the previous installments. If you think God of War is just a button-mashing title then prepare to change your opinion very soon. The game did not receive overwhelmingly positive reviews from all over for nothing.

God of War Ending Explained

According to Creative Director Cory Barlog, God of War will take 25-35 hours of your time to complete. So, our friendly advice is that you should go and play the game before you advance any further because we are about to go spoiler-filled discussion from here on. If you still go any further, just remember that you have been warned.

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR GOD OF WAR.

Years have passed since he slew the Olympian gods, Kratos now has changed. He is out for a journey with his son to pay final respects to his wife and Atreus’ mother Faye, who wanted her ashes to be spread from top of tallest mountain among Nine Realms. Before they could embark their perilous journey, they are met by a “Stranger” who starts a fight with Kratos. Soon enough, it is revealed that he feels no pain, which makes him practically invincible and he happens to be a Norse god.

Baldur, The Stranger

Throughout the entire game, this guy keeps interrupting Kratos and his boy in their quest and it turns out he is a son of Odin named Baldur. There is also a witch who helps around the father-son duo in their journey throughout for some mysterious reason. Her name is Freya and she is another character from Norse mythology we will know more in a bit. It was the time when Kratos and his son go to see Freya for resurrecting Mimir’s head when we learn that she too, is a god.

Mimir requests the God of War to kill him as he was being tortured by Odin himself and Freya is his wife. Also, she happens to be the mother of Baldur, who is unkillable because of a spell his mother cast on him so that nothing from Earth can harm him except one; mistletoe. The spell also took his ability to feel anything at all, which is the sole reason why he picks up fight with Kratos so that he can finally feel pain and die.

god of war ps4 baldur vs kratos
The Death of Baldur

Atreus had some special mistletoe arrows in his possession that he received from blacksmith Sindri as a gift. Freya saw those when resurrecting Mimir and instantly frightened for Baldur's life. This is because, her son can be killed with these arrows, which she wanted to avert anyhow and demanded that Atreus burn them all. However, burning mistletoe arrows did not stop the inevitable at all in the end. Baldur was actually after Faye who was from Jotunheim and he ended up mistakenly attacking them because they were carrying her ashes.

In his final encounter with them, the spell on Baldur is broken when he is hit by a mistletoe arrow from Atreus. Upon defeating him, Kratos spared his life when Atreus convinced him to do so but an enraged Baldur then confronts his mother Freya. For cursing his life by trying to interfere with it he attempts to strangle her when Kratos was forced to intervene and ended up killing him by snapping his neck. Freya was willing to die to make things right but now that her son is dead, she swears vengeance upon God of War.

The Frost Giant Prophecy

After she is gone, Kratos begin telling Atreus his own story of how he came to become who he is today from Sparta to be a god and slaying many other gods that eventually led him to kill his own father Zeus. Too shocked at this revelation, his young son muses if this is what all gods ends up doing and is it the destiny of all gods after all! His father begs to differ and suggests that they can all be better by learning from their mistakes. What he did not know then is that by killing Baldur, he actually prompted Ragnarok sooner than it was meant to be and that is by at least 100 winters.

Now that both Baldur and Freya out of their way, they reach to Jotunheim to find the tallest mountain top and fulfill their quest to honor Faye's last wish. There, they learn from a broken mural that she was actually one of the giants. Interestingly enough, it also foretold everything that has happened so far from when they begin this journey and came across everyone in their path including World Serpent Jörmungandr, the blacksmith brothers and even the final battle with Baldur.

god of war playstation 4 atreus
Story of Atreus

Could it be that Faye actually wanted both Kratos and Atreus to know about her own origin and so she requested for them to do this? Well, possibly. Because, his mother and her people actually named him Loki and this journey was all about discovering his roots. There was another piece of art that Kratos missed on his first time which depicts a grown-up Atreus holding his dead father in arms but whatever mystery that suggests will possibly revealed in a sequel.

Whatever new direction God of War wants to go from fighting Nordic gods and monsters in its future sequels are more than a few. Since the original trilogy of the franchise was based on Kratos taking on key-figures from Greek mythology and by that end, he ended up killing them all. This rebooted series begins into the heartland of Norse mythology and it is quite needless to say that Odin will probably be the ultimate antagonist of this new series. Although, he was never shown throughout the game but his family members and those who know him were all over.

god of war ps4 thor hammer
Hammer of Thor

To back that up, the god of thunder; Thor shows up at their doorstep in the game's secret ending, when Kratos and Atreus returns home from their journey. His brother Baldur is dead now, his sons Magni and Modi are not alive as well, so he has enough reason to be pissed at them and seeking vengeance for all the right reasons. That is a very solid teaser in advance for the next game whether it turned out to be God of War 2 or God of War 5. Interesting thing will be to see how they tie up Loki being his adopted brother according to Norse legacy.

Also, Ragnarok is teased and that means a great event that will bring the ending of all. If prophecy follows, Odin and Thor are going to die along with Loki, unless Kratos somehow finds another way for his son. Until that all unfolds to us, you can enjoy God of War, which is currently available worldwide for playing exclusively on PlayStation 4.

God of War Combat System Explained

The newest title from the God of War series is about to drop within months and players around the world are already hyped as hell for this game. Developer Santa Monica Studio and publisher Sony is bringing Kratos back to action once again but not like the way he used to be of course. While everyone is calling this one a reboot and the studio refused to name it "God of War 4", there are still elements that totally separate the game from all other releases of the series.

One of the many things that helped God of War of 2018 to stand out from the rest of the franchise is the evolved combat system. Below is a clip where game director Cory Barlog and lead combat designer Jason McDonald discusses about it and we recommend you to watch it.

As always, God of War means some extra hype among fans and some more craze with Kratos, which will be no different this time either. Most of the previous installments of the series mostly focused on traditional arcade brawling or mindless hack/slash towards the enemies. The upcoming title however, is more purposeful on the action that takes place. Kratos in a fight feels more relatable to you with the new control scheme.

Time has passed, gameplay of the series has changed but good ole' Kratos didn't lose his temper at all and he still hits pretty hard. No longer has he been wielding those Blades of Exile but he chose a new weapon called The Leviathan Axe. Slashing your enemies or just splitting them over with the Axe is what Kratos do for his namesake. Pressing R1 and R2 in times of playing will allow you to perform those attacks in-game.

The Leviathan Axe has another feat, where it is thrown at enemies and Kratos can recall his axe back to him, much like Thor does with his Mjolnir. Anything that stands between the way of it and his hand is destined to get devastated. This weapon is also good for hurling at and gives the wielder some time while the victim is pinned down and there are others to take care of as well. Away from the axe, Kratos is all good with his bare-knuckle punches to decimate whoever stands opposing him.

New Control Scheme

Aside from these, he blocks and swing back for counter attacks with his shield, which makes the fights more strategic rather than jumping into mindless bashing. Despite the series being moved from its roots a little bit with a slight different path, you will still enjoy this. At times, gameplay mechanics of this new title may even seem familiar to Bloodborne or Dark Souls and that might appeal the game to many other players who haven't played God of War before.

RELATED: Dark Souls: Remastered Announced

Kratos can get into his Spartan Rage if you press L3 and R3 at the same time, sending him into frenzy at his enemies to lay waste of them. God of War makes the bare-knuckle fight part so enjoyable that you might actually prefer it over The Leviathan Axe sometimes. It's just happens to be so satisfying to crush your enemies with bare hands and when you are good at this. Players get to customize their weapon, grow combat skill trees, pick up gears and stat upgrades.

An Extension of Kratos

Then we got Kratos’s son Atreus acting as an extension for the God of War, who will be scouring the nearby areas and give out enemy positions. Atreus comes in handy to stun certain enemies with a powerful arrow that were about to getaway. This is actually pretty cool as it gives Atreus to hang out with his father on the battlefield rather than just purposelessly wandering around him. This is a bad-ass father and his aspiring son into becoming the dynamic duo for next generation of video games.
