Serious Sam 4 Will Be Google Stadia-Exclusive

Revealed to launch on all platforms, Serious Sam 4 will be a Google Stadia-exclusive that won't arrive on PS4 and Xbox One until 2021.

After a long period of hiatus, developer Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital finally returned to reveal an official release window of upcoming first-person shooter title Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, which is set to arrive on August 2020.

Planet Badass has confirmed its initial launch platforms to be Google Stadia and PC via Steam. Serious Sam 4 will not see release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles anytime before 2021 due to its timed exclusivity period for Stadia.

Early impressions implied that SS4 will be released simultaneously across all current-gen console platforms. However, players on Google's cloud gaming service gets to play the game before everyone else on PS4 and Xbox One.

Google has paid a large sum to attain an exclusivity deal for Stadia and will not allow SS4: Planet Badass to release on home consoles. Devolver has not yet given any exact date of expected release or when exclusive window ends though.

Despite making many promises ahead of launch, Stadia eventually failed to make a lasting impression to consumer base. Its ambitious launch back in November 2019 was watered down quickly by lack of games and technical difficulties.

Serious Sam 4 exclusivity can draw some attention of gaming crowd to Stadia but majority of them won't be very happy about it. A game announced for all platforms becoming a timed exclusive stinks like nothing other than corporate greed.

Serious Sam franchise made its debut back in 2001 and instantly received a cult-following within FPS genre. Upon completing a trilogy with Serious Sam 3: BFE in 2011, developers took a long break for over a decade to comeback.

Serious Sam 4 is bringing back classic action vibe of titular series in fast-paced gunplay and cheesy one-liners. It will introduce new "Legion" system, which can spawn up to tens of thousands of enemies to crowd its expansive maps.

With only few weeks left from release, developer id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks are on full swing to promote their upcoming first-person shooter game Doom Eternal for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

RELATED: Doom Eternal Comes to Nintendo Switch

In a recent interview with IGN, lead engine programmer of id Software, Billy Khan discuss about latest enhancement made to id Tech 7 engine with a bunch of new features to show off detailed surrounding and hardware compatibility.

Latest upgrades to in-game engine have now lead to much bigger explosions and variety of particle effect in Doom Eternal. Moreover, upper limit for frames per second has maxed out for existing and upcoming generation of consoles.

RELATED: Doom and Doom 2 Gets 60 FPS Support

Whereas id Soft could go up to 250 frames per second with id Tech 6 in past, you can hit 1000 frames per second in id Tech 7. Khan even locally built a custom hardware for testing in studio and has it running at 400 frames per second.

This astounding scaling would not only make Doom Eternal look good visually on present-day consoles but it essentially makes the game future-proof for many years to come when players will revisit it with upgraded gaming hardware.

RELATED: Doom Eternal Second Trailer

Since current-gen console hardware is unable to run such FPS or even capable of handling it, developers got really interested as they can take similar approach in making games that players will revisit in future with high-end setups.

Games on consoles are stressing over achieving a frame rate between 30 and 60 frames per second for more than a decade. Third-person games usually strive near to 30 FPS and first-person titles pushes for locking at 60 FPS.

RELATED: The Elder Scrolls: Legends Halts Development

This higher frame count greatly affects player point of view in terms of smoothness, mostly in shooter genre of games. You can easily detect if frames are stumbling inn first-person perspective than noticing them on third-person.

Also, id Tech 7 will seamlessly scale with your current setup to newest ones that are not out in the market yet. This is great news for PC gaming community as they will see a performance boost every time they upgrade their machine.

RELATED: Doom Eternal Won't Have Micro-Transactions

Aside from working on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X enhancements, Khan and his team has worked to make sure that id Tech 7 will work nicely for next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles with more exciting plans for future.

With recent rise of streaming platforms, players will be hopefully able to stream Doom Eternal at 1000 FPS at some point. Meanwhile, developers can start working on new technology to step over 60 frames per second and go beyond.

Combat mechanics is unlike regular turn-based RPG games and its better for player to consider their in-game actions before heading into a fight as your enemies will take notes and other environmental aspects will play a great role.

Larian has taken most of progressions from Divinity: Original Sin games and implemented them to suit Dungeons & Dragons rule set. This hybrid mixture was what truly needed for a modern day return of a storied franchise like Baldur's Gate.

Combat in BG games were focused on dealing direct damage by casting spells or swinging swords, all of which took place on same plane in 2D. Divinity series of games takes physics engine to a higher level and that applies to BG3.

You can push someone off a high ridge or set a pool ablaze with a fire spell unlike many other classic role-playing games on PC. There are not much gameplay changes except for a two six-sided dice rolls to add pen and paper RPG feeling.

Players would be given a required number to perform most actions based on their skill level and see a die roll in real-time on screen. Although rolling a 20-sided die is a minor inclusion to BGIII but it does a lot for a tabletop D&D game vibe.

You can't simply rely on your higher skill set or load game from early save to determine your fate. Of course, no video game can grant players complete freedom but gameplay mechanics of BG3 are designed to offer you maximum flexibility.

Baldur's Gate III has a lot to live up to meet a benchmark set by its series predecessor D&D titles. Debuting through Steam Early Access will let Larian dev team to work out its bugs and eventually deliver a stable game over time.

Darksiders: Genesis is Overpriced on Google Stadia

Google Stadia would charge $10 extra on regular price of Darksiders: Genesis and THQ deny commenting.

Latest installment of Darksiders series is a top-down hack and slash action role-playing game from developer Airship Syndicate and publisher THQ Nordic titled Darksiders: Genesis just came out on December 5, 2019 for PC and Google Stadia.

If suffering from a rocky launch last month was not bad enough for Stadia due to lack of promised features and latency issue, Genesis would cost people $10 extra on Google's cloud gaming service than it would for PC version.

Stadia Pro subscribers received an exclusive offer from Google of up to 50% discount on select games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Tomb Raider reboot from 2013 but members got no price off on Genesis purchase or pre-order.

It would cost you $39.99 to buy Darksiders: Genesis on Stadia whereas you can get a copy of at Steam for only $14.99 right now to save $25 right off the bat or get it from outlets like GOG or Humble Store at a standard price of just $29.99.

A price difference with PC version is a very absurd idea for a service that just had a rough launch period earlier and very less to offer in terms of their game catalog, with major titles like Borderlands 3 to arrive later this year.

When reached out to THQ Nordic for comments on price variation between platforms, their representative chose not to speak on their price policy and there is clearly no indication of why Stadia would charge more for a game than other stores.

Some players are trying to point out that console versions of games often cost more than PC release and Google is likely taking an additional $10 to follow similar pricing model but then again, Stadia is not a console at all.

Set before events from previous titles, Darksiders: Genesis is a spin-off prequel that awaits a console release on February 2020. Its plot explores a war between Heaven and Hell, featuring both Strife and War as two playable lead characters.
