Naughty Dog May Be Teasing Announcement at PlayStation Showcase 2021

Following release of PlayStation 4-exclusive action-adventure survival horror game The Last of Us Part II last year, developer Naughty Dog has been keeping quiet after briefly teasing plot for a sequel while facing a number of controversies.

Though it was confirmed by Naughty Dog that they were busy working on multiplayer mode for The Last of Us 2, there is no release date yet. However, they are seemingly teasing to make an appearance at PlayStation Showcase 2021 event.

Earlier today, Naughty Dog game designer Grant Hoechst has shared original announcement by Sony Interactive Entertainment for upcoming PlayStation Showcase event on Twitter, possibly hinting at a surprise reveal on September 9, 2021.

Naughty Dog was working on The Last of Us 2 multiplayer mode during development but had to put it aside to focus on single-player story campaign and with a PlayStation event scheduled for next week, it seems like a right time to show it off.

Naughty Dog designer quote Tweeted original announcement post by Sony, possibly teasing for a surprise reveal.

It could also be that Hoechst was just sharing his excitement for major announcements coming up at next week's showcase. Considering their multiplayer project has long been under wraps, it could be a little tease for eagerly awaiting players.

Naughty Dog is still hiring for their mysterious multiplayer game and it's not clear that at which point of development they are right now, even though an active job listing doesn't really specify whether a project is currently in early days or not.

Because of ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, Sony had to postpone many of their first-party exclusives to next year. Amidst such calamity, Naughty Dog's standalone multiplayer game on PS4 and PS5 may help them recoup the loss a little.

Some recent leaks have strongly hinted that The Last of Us Part II could feature a Battle Royale mode as a multiplayer spin-off. Sony could even announce a free-to-play online game set in The Last of Us universe and convince fans to buy a PS5.
