The Last of Us Part 2 Gameplay Details

Newly revealed The Last of Us Part II gameplay demo details on new ability features and enemy types.

Recently showcased on State of Play episode, developer Naughty Dog released a new story trailer for upcoming action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II and is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020.

There was a media event held on September 24 for TLoU2 in Los Angeles, where they presented a short demo for select crowd that reveals new gameplay details, features and visual improvements made for the much awaited sequel.

Ellie is nineteen now and during early phase of the demo, Ellie would share beautiful moments with her companion, Dina. These two spending time together in Wyoming wilderness slowly build up a premise for what comes next.

By second half of demo, she becomes really violent and will stop at nothing to exact revenge on people who hurt her loved ones. When in Seattle, she encounters a hostile group of survivors who kept Joel's brother, Tommy captive.

No matter how cruel and harsh they are, these enemies she faces are real people with friends or families and therefore, taking them down will cause people close to them scream in grief but that is a price you have to pay to survive.

Ellie starts patrolling on horseback through abandoned towns of Jackson, Wyoming in snow. She and Dina go looking for any sign of infected Clickers, looters or even some survivors within empty buildings as their primary objective.

They leave behind the snowy landscape when entering to neighborhood of Seattle, where her surroundings are covered in green. This is where things start going topsy turvy and she had to take a stand against a ruthless enemy group.

Now that she is no longer a little girl, Ellie is more flexible and can do a lot of stuff compared to Joel. She can jump to reach higher areas to find a way out and even able to dodge close-range attacks to save her neck from a slashing axe.

RELATED: The Last of Us Part 2 Gameplay Revealed

Dodging is a newly added feature that can come in very handy in times of avoiding a surprise attack or sort of try to corner you. Naughty Dog has developed an improved AI for opponents to act smarter and be a bit unpredictable at times.

Another latest aspect of her movement is crawling ability that gives her an edge for stealth, allowing her to quickly get out of enemy sight. However, enemies use trained guard dog to sniff you out and track down even if you are hiding.

Of course, you can stay away from them by activating Listen Mode and follow your scent trail but after you manage to kill their handler, whether you chose to leave them or take them down is totally up to your own moral choice.

Further playthrough will unlock abilities for Ellie and there are multiple skill upgrade paths to choose from depending on your preferred playstyle. Stealth focus is largely leaned towards survival and crafting lets her upgrade melee weapons.

Also, since entire studio became very busy creating an ambitious single-player experience, Naughty Dog has confirmed on recent press event to unfortunately backtracking from their early plans of including multiplayer components.

The Last of Us Part II has largely improved on core gameplay mechanics of critically-acclaimed original from 2013 and is coming on two discs due to size of its overall content, which will hopefully be worth waiting for such long.

The Last of Us 2 Release Date and Collector's Edition Announced

Naughty Dog reveals official release date and Collector's Editions for Last of Us Part II on Sony's recent State of Play.

Ever since game director Neil Druckmann posted out about wrapping up shooting for The Last of Us Part II on Twitter, fans have been speculating about an early 2020 release date for upcoming PlayStation 4 action-adventure game.

Ahead of Sony's recent episode of State of Play presentation, developer Naughty Dog confirmed for TLoU2 to be a part of its showcase and it eventually revealed to come out on February 21, 2020 via a newly released trailer.

In a vague manner, the video picks up from an early trailer shown at E3 2018 and pick things up from there to match current status quo. It attempts to slowly unravel why Ellie appeared to be a vengeful spirit, who is hell-bent on revenge.

An older Ellie is asked by her love interest Dina about how she would rate their kiss from last night and she just looks at her. Then the scene cuts to show a community that has raised walls to keep away from rest of the world.

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Wraps Shooting

A group of survivors have made a life inside and appears to live in prosperity until one bad day of going for a supply run or survey of some sorts. Ellie decided to tag along with Dina and her friend Jesse, unaware of what is coming to them.

They came across some Cordyceps infected during their excursion in winter and eventually made it through but then an encounter with a mysterious cult proves to be too much for them when Ellie suffers a great loss at their hands.

She barely made it out and came back alive with a strong resolve for vengeance even though her friends discourage her to go up against such large group called Seraphites but she ran into them like an unstoppable force of reckoning.

Getting into their territory, she ran into some overwhelming odds to handle but kept going, until she found a friendly assistant. Her father figure and an elderly Joel came following to help her who is not willing to let her do this alone.

The Last of Us Part 2 Rumored to Release in February 2020

Rumor suggests The Last of Us Part II is going to release for PS4 in February 2020 with four different editions.

Fans are eagerly waiting to get any update on upcoming PlayStation 4 action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II but we don't have a definitive release date from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment yet.

We do know that back in May 2019, shooting for TLoU2 was finally wrapped, which was revealed by game director Neil Druckmann on Twitter and according to a newly leaked rumor from ResetEra, is releasing on February 2020.

A recent post at ResetEra forum claims for the game to come out in February 2020 and earlier this year, same source has leaked a possible November release of Hideo Kojima's mysterious title Death Stranding ahead of its grand reveal.

It also claims The Last of Us Part II will be available in four different versions; Standard, Special, Collector's and Ellie Edition. Though it is not confirmed what "Ellie Edition" would feature but it certainly is going to be most expensive among all four.

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Only Playable Character is Ellie

As a sequel to critically acclaimed title The Last of Us from 2013, Part II is currently one of the most anticipated games on PS4. Despite being announced during 2016 PlayStation Experience event, it doesn't have a launch window so far.

Apparently, PlayStation will see launch to some notable AAA-exclusive titles like Death Stranding and Final Fantasy VII Remake by latter half of 2019 and beginning of 2020 but TLoU2 has yet to claim a release window in the mean time.

RELATED: Sony Reveals PlayStation 5 Console Plans

Considering this leak to be true, TLoU sequel is going to come out months before Cyberpunk 2077, FFVII Remake and Watch Dogs: Legion. Plus, February 2020 makes sense as there are no other bigger releases nearing that window.

We are in Q3 of current financial year and it doesn't look like The Last of Us Part II will drop within rest of 2019. Instead, Sony may announce an official launch date through an upcoming State of Play presentation since they already skipped E3 2019.

The Last of Us Part 2 Wraps Shooting

Neil Druckmann announces wrap up shooting for upcoming Naughty Dog title The Last of Us Part II on Twitter.

Originally announced back in 2016 at PlayStation Experience, action-adventure game The Last of Us Part II remains one of the most anticipated upcoming titles from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment.

We didn't get an official release date yet because the game is still under development but recently, game director Neil Druckmann has announced on social media that motion capture has wrapped up, completing major part of the process.

We know that lead characters Joel and Ellie are returning for this impending PlayStation 4-exclusive that is set five years after The Last of Us but this time the latter will be going through a cycle of violence for personal reasons.

In terms of story, there was a teaser and a trailer that only explores fraction of its entire plot without possibly revealing any major twist. A footage featuring gameplay was released during E3 2018 and it was as brutal as it could get.

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Gameplay Revealed

The Last of Us remains a saga of Joel and Ellie going through a lot of blood, sweat and tears that is very close to Neil. Of course, Baker and Johnson too are similarly attached to this sequel project as well that is heading towards completion.

Druckmann has posted an image of actor Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker on Twitter, pointing to an emotional wrap-up.

He also posted another image on Instagram of himself with actor Laura Bailey, who is playing an unnamed character.

Although wrapping up motion capture scenes shooting are major part of development but Naughty Dog still has much work to do for making this much awaited PS4 game a reality, even though it probably is not coming out in 2019.

While waiting for a release date to be announced, we can expect The Last of Us Part II to also arrive on PlayStation 5 following recent revealing of its first details. Besides, PS5 console is going to be backwards compatible with PS4 games anyway.

Rumors are going around among gaming communities for some time that Sony Interactive Entertainment has been working on next-generation PlayStation console for some time and people are already calling it PlayStation 5 despite any official confirmation.

Apparently, they were working on it for past four years now and most recently, lead system architect Mark Cerny spilled some beans about some planned outlines for the hardware in an exclusive interview with monthly magazine Wired.

Sony plans for their next video game console to be powered by CPU based third-generation AMD Ryzen line of processor and GPU based on Radeon Navi series, a custom variant to support ray tracing and up to 8K resolutions.

Ray tracing allows for simulating complex 3D environments and is common in Hollywood for visual effects. Some companies are trying to employ it for their high-end processors like Nvidia RTX line but no console was able to handle it so far.

Although the method is mostly used for graphical aesthetics of rendering objects more accurately to maintain realism, it can dramatically change audio experience as well, such as enemies being able to hear players' footsteps and all.

Next-gen PlayStation consoles will be using a solid-state drive for utilizing its speedy bandwidth to significantly decrease loading time of games and delivering faster online multiplayer experience than ever before.

Also, it will be backwards compatible for PS4 games and comes with PlayStation VR support but Cerny did not drop further details on their future plans for VR yet. Nor did he talk about any services or other features other than hardware specs.

Generally, Sony would have a keynote presentation at E3 in June but since they are skipping the annual game show for this year, our best guess is that any brand-new State of Play episode of their broadcast will most likely do that.

The Last of Us Part 2 Only Playable Character is Ellie

Naughty Dog suggesting that protagonist Joel of the original game will not be a playable character in the sequel.

Critically acclaimed action-adventure survival horror The Last of Us is getting a sequel, which was announced at PlayStation Experience 2016. By the time we witnessed E3 2018, we got to look at some gameplay footage as promised by game director Neil Druckmann. Developers of Naughty Dog has been hinting for some time that Joel from the original game will not be a playable character in The Last of Us Part II anymore and Ellie will take charge from here in the sequel.

the last of us 2 ellie playable character

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Gameplay Revealed

After some time, Druckmann also confirmed this theory recently during Sony's E3 2018 press conference. Previously, players were able to take control of both Joel and Ellie in a two-part gameplay but it looks like we are not going to experience anything like that. Now, this leads fans to speculate that the studio is probably killing off Joel's character and they have many reasons to believe that. One of them is Ellie being the sole focus of all the trailers released till date.

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Announced

Ellie is a teenage survivor of a post-apocalyptic world, who grew under the wings of Joel as a strong female protagonist and they both developed a bond. There is a good reason for Naughty Dog being all secretive about what happened to her guardian angel in this PlayStation 4-exclusive. Perhaps, they just don't want to spoil the story for fans in advance as it can diminish the impact of this twist upon release. Probably this is why; Joel actually appears briefly in one of the early trailers and interacted with her.

Joel Isn’t Playable

RELATED: The Last of Us Part II Premiere Trailer

Our best guess is that he died in between the events of these two games and whatever appearances he makes is some sort of cameo in form of flashback from past. The E3 gameplay reveal trailer hints of him still being around when Jesse talks to Ellie about her "Old-Man", which strongly refers to Joel. However, she then embarks a journey for retribution also suggests that she lost someone beloved to her and maybe she lost him as well as her newly introduced love interest Dina.

RELATED: Shannon Woodward Joins The Last of Us 2

Although Druckmann confirmed Ellie being the only playable character, possibilities of Joel appearing in a later DLC is still in hand. Keeping the dark aesthetic of the series in mind and Joel's phrasing to Ellie in the first trailer as “You really going to go through with this?” instead of saying "We" deeply hints that he is just a ghostly apparition that resides in her mind as she seeks revenge against some group of humans we saw her prey on at the gameplay reveal trailer.

The Last of Us Part 2 Gameplay Revealed

The very first gameplay trailer for The Last of Us Part II is finally revealed at E3 2018, showcasing Ellie to be a deadly fighter.

It's been five years that critically acclaimed action-adventure survival horror game The Last of Us is released and we only learned about a sequel being actually developed titled The Last of Us Part II at PlayStation Experience 2016. After dropping two trailers of the game previously, Neil Druckmann from developer studio Naughty Dog promised lately to show off some more of his game at E3 2018 and he kept his word by releasing a new trailer which focuses on the gameplay.

Time for dropping everything else and witness what new revelation The Last of Us Part II hold for us in this brand-new gameplay reveal trailer.

Series protagonist Ellie is 19 now and not a little girl anymore. She apparently has found some peace as well as a relationship with a girl named Dina. Ellie is at a gathering, quietly enjoying a drink while watching her love interest dance in a room full of people and a friend of her named Jesse joins her for a talk. Dina comes back to grab Ellie for a dance before they depart from Jesse and they talk about how everyone is awkwardly gawking at them and then starts kissing passionately.

The scene then cuts to a time in future where Ellie was slicing a man's throat afar from his teammates. We do know that the sequel is set five years after the events of the first game but jumping in between timelines, it is really hard to tell whether or not the events from that evening with Dina was from before or after the outbreak. Her approach to these marauders depicted through her actions is seemingly vengeful and possibly they have messed with her in some major way that she is looking for payback so bad. Stealth is shown to have give player a tactical advantage when surrounded by multiple enemies and health is running low during combat. Though no infected swarm of Clickers were to be seen anywhere, the human enemies are seem to appear more ruthless and resourceful because of an entirely rebuilt game engine.

The trailer clearly shows that game director Druckmann knows how to keep fans hooked and yearning for more. It starts with a slow, calm opening seemingly with an intent of telling a compelling story and then smoothly dives into gameplay footage to display the in-game lengths it will let you reach before coming back to the ongoing story for a complete cinematic experience. From graphics to fluid animation of the characters fleshing out every little details was truly amazing.

Currently, The Last of Us Part 2 II is in works for PlayStation 4 and already two breathtaking trailers are dropped. As he was talking about it, Druckmann reveals that the game took major inspiration from the dark comedy original Netflix series The End of the F***ing World and the emphasis were mainly focused on the dialogue of the sequel. According to him, the story of the series is well written and acted, which you would agree too if you have already watched the show or the trailer.

"There’s a show on Netflix called End of the F***ing World – which is so well written, acted, and quirky – has been totally inspiring the stuff we’re doing in [The Last of Us 2]. Again, more on the dialogue stuff."

Though the show, The End of the F***ing World is worth a binge watch if you are all game for a good time, the black comedic tones of the series hardly matches with a post-apocalyptic game setting of The Last of Us filled with cannibals and hostile humans everywhere. The edgy dialogues of it however, go along fine with the messed up atmosphere of the game. Neil Druckmann was probably referring to laughing at the darker side of things in Naughty Dog's crown jewel.
