Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Could Reportedly Be Revived

Even after two decades of release on arcades and consoles, crossover 2D fighting game Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is still popular within gaming community till date and fans are really hoping to get a revival of this 2000's classic.

Last month, there was an outcry over social media to bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom sequel for fans once again for modern-day consoles. It eventually caught attention to Capcom and Disney as they are reportedly trying to revive it somehow.

Known content creator and Twitch streamer Maximilian Dood started #FreeMVC2 campaign on Twitter last month. Even celebrities like Michel B. Jordan (Black Panther, Creed) have stated last year, "We gotta bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom 2".

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 originally debuted as a team-based brawler featuring an expanded roster of legendary comic-book superheroes and gaming icons, marking a company-wide crossover in sprite-based 2D graphics and fast-paced combat.

In spite of its overwhelming popularity among fans, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has been removed by Capcom from digital storefronts in 2013. After nearly a decade of its absence, franchise fans are campaigning for a much-awaited return of MVC2.

Marvel Vs. Capcom series has been on a hiatus following 2017's poorly-received title Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite. However, fans are still asking Capcom to restore MVC in its former glory with a remaster for PC and current-generation console.

Digital Eclipse head Mike Mika has shown interest in working on MVC2 re-release and he talked with YouTube channel GamerHubTV recently regarding possibilities of Capcom and Disney both agreeing to bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 to life.

Digital Eclipse previously worked on a number of remaster for Capcom and Disney for new-gen consoles. However, reviving MVC2 for current-gen systems may not be easier because several involved parties requires coming to an agreement.

Mika is very much interested in bringing back MVC2 and has reached out to Capcom and Disney after #FreeMVC2 campaign. He said that licensing costs are biggest barrier for MVC2 re-release as it could be greater than actual budget of a game.

He also declined rumors of Capcom, Disney and Marvel not having a friendly work relationship these days after Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite. In fact, now will be a great time as any for these companies to join together for a remaster of MVC2.

Marvel Games has been enjoying notable success with licensed games like Marvel's Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales in recent years. Newly announced Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine will only continue to build up more superhero hype.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 coming to PC and current-gen consoles like PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X will be a great news for long-time series fans. MVC2 would get a new life if Capcom, Disney and Marvel can eventually manage to figure things out.
