Naughty Dog May Not Revive The Last of Us and Uncharted Anytime Soon

Ahead of upcoming 10th anniversary, developer Naughty Dog has recently shared updates on a standalone multiplayer game set within The Last of Us universe with a concept art while teasing a reveal and more exciting news coming soon.

With recent success of HBO series, fans are even more excited to see what Naughty Dog would do with The Last of Us Part III in future but series creative director teased that there may not be a third installment without a compelling story.

In a latest interview with Buzzfeed, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann talks about what they are planning for The Last of Us series, saying that ND studio has moved on from Uncharted series and can do the same with TLoU, Part III.

Druckmann claims that even after great commercial and critical success of The Last of Us series, Sony wouldn't pressure Naughty Dog to continue with Abby and Ellie's story though a follow-up sequel and third game in The Last of Us Part 3.

However, if Naughty Dog can come up with a gripping story and feels really passionate about it, they will make Part III. If not, the studio may decide to move on from TLoU series like it did with another big-blockbuster franchise, Uncharted.

Acknowledging how they are lucky to have Sony as publisher, Druckmann says that just because something is successful, there need not to be a sequel and Uncharted was really very successful but Naughty Dog moved on after fourth game.

Similarly with The Last of Us, it's up to whether they want to continue or not and looks like they are already busy with a spin-off. If the studio can't come up with a compelling story, then Part 3 won't be possible and Part II will be series end.

The Last of Us franchise has sold over 37 million copies since launch and made its debut on HBO recently with a TV adaptation. Coinciding with its groundbreaking success, Druckmann suggests that a potential Season 2 can be greenlit soon.
