Valve Rumored to Develop VR Headset for Half-Life Prequel

According to a series of leaked image, Valve is developing new VR headset for what seems like a Half-Life prequel game.

Before getting into the business of running digital distribution platform for video games via Steam, Valve Corporation used to be the developer studio that Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series of games, none of which got a third installment in nearly a decade.

According to leaked images from online image sharing community site Imgur, Valve is currently working on and soon will unveil their very own VR headset that is completely separate from the HTC Vive gear they are supporting right now.

These leaked images found by UploadVR suggest that the Valve device is still in prototype stage but they are trying to make it equivalent to the HTC display of virtual reality technology that will offer a 135 degree field of view when finished.

They appear to have two cameras and integrated headphones included in it with possibility of adding new "Knuckles" motion controllers. The same source also hinted that this gadget could come out bundled with a brand-new Half-Life game from the company.

Apparently, this one is not the long-awaited Half-Life 3 but a prequel game that would feature the return of Dr. Gordon Freeman into fighting aliens once again. The fictional immersive world Valve built around this game was loved by fans but they decided to continue with Portal series instead.

Although they came up with two more episodes for Half-Life 2, a third game is still stuck at planning stage as it seems. So, we suggest you take any mystery news of a prequel or a brand-new sequel with grain of salt.

Back in March, President Gabe Newell of Valve have announced that the studio is returning back to video game development and they simply are not indicating their upcoming digital collectible card game Artifact by that. The company decided to start shipping games again after developing them.

For years, there were also rumors flying on live-actions movies being pitched for Half-Life and Portal franchise too. With their newly developed VR compatible software and hardware, Valve may come back to dominate the video game market once again.

However, this is not the first time enthusiast fans of the acclaimed first-person shooter series are hearing of a potential Half-Life game whether it is on VR or not. In 2016, players found the phrase "HLVR" in Dota 2 by digging deep inside the code and then their Steam VR app also had a mention of it as well.

We even heard about multiple projects on the fan-favorite franchise being pitched or maybe development but never saw a single one coming after Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007. Let's just hope that the rumors turn out to be true this time.

By far, these two are the best ones PS Plus subscribers got their hands on throughout the entire year. We are nearly on the verge of October and Sony has released a new free games lineup for upcoming month.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Coming to VR

Ninja Theory studio brings the dark world of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in virtual reality next week.

After debuting from an independent developer/publisher studio Ninja Theory, dark fantasy action-adventure title Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice received critical acclaim for its very unique story and gameplay. Initially, the game was released for PC and PlayStation 4 last year. Later, it landed on Xbox One on April 2018 and now finally, it is coming to virtual reality pretty soon through a free update next week as a different version titled Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice VR Edition.

This multi-genre game is coming to virtual reality platforms Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on July 31, 2018. Players who already own the game on Steam can get the update for free upon release. However, it won't be able to support PlayStation VR right now because; the VR Edition currently requires a high-end hardware spec on PC. To run it in an anticipated 90 FPS, you will need at least Nvidia GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU just to experience it on a minimum condition.

The VR update is not just a side story added as an extra bonus feature or a technical demo of some sort. This is very much a near similar version of the original game. After two years of working on the project by running experiments with camera tricks and trying to master head-tracking control, they made it a reality. Matthews explains, this endeavor was just to see their capability to work with virtual reality and to offer fans an extra bonus for free, rather than having a business purpose.

Senua’s dramatically complex psychosis is explored in a fascinating way while still retaining a third-person perspective in VR and not making players feel nauseated at the same time controlling the Pict warrior with head-turns. British developer studio Ninja Theory has done an amazing job in creating a visually stunning Triple-A game that is also artistically superior to many of its peers, while making this all possible with a small team and short budget.

Bethesda Director Responds to Skyrim Port Jokes

Bethesda director Todd Howard says that, they only make Skyrim ports because fans are still buying it.

It's been seven years that action role-playing game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from Bethesda Softworks has been released and players are still so passionate about the game even today. Keeping that in mind, publisher Bethesda is also releasing the game on various ports every now and then. There are running jokes among fans on them doing ports for Skyrim and game director Todd Howard simply suggested them to stop playing the game if they want all these ports.

The latest in the line of ports for Skyrim has made available for Amazon Echo after it was ported to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, VR and Xbox One. When they dropped a commercial starring Keegan-Michael Keys playing it on the device, many have thought of it as a spoof.

Recently, company director Todd Howard is awarded as "Industry Legend" at the annual Gamelab event in Barcelona for his contribution on Fallout and The Elder Scrolls series. Afterwards in an interview with Geoff Keighley, he states their reason for regularly making ports for Skyrim, which is simply because fans keep buying the game over and over. He made a valid point with that comment because TESV remains to be the most popular among the franchise till date.

"Even now, the amount of people who play Skyrim seven years later; millions of people every month are playing that game. That's why we keep releasing it. If you want us to stop releasing it, stop buying it."

Skyrim offer players to assume the role of Dragonborn, a mortal man with the soul and power of a dragon, who is destined to save humanity from a fabled black dragon named Alduin. A massive open world environment is up for exploring during the quest and may compelling RPG elements increases replay value for the title. Although The Elder Scrolls VI has been teased during E3, it is still in early development phase and ain't coming anytime soon.

Reportedly, TESV: Skyrim is listed as one of the games on Steam with most concurrent number of players alongside titles like Civilization V, Payday 2 and Rocket League, amassing more than 50,000 players simultaneously. Todd wants the worlds of Bethesda to be sustainable as long as he is here and since the game still sells, releasing newer ports isn't that bad of an idea. Maybe gamers are simply worried thinking that re-releasing an old game probably burns out creative energy of developers.

Tomb Raider Trilogy Remastered Canceled

Only a week ago, we've learned that 90's legendary action-adventure game series Tomb Raider has been developed into re-mastered edition by Realtech VR. The first three release of the franchise were chosen to be re-mastered but now that dream can probably never come true as the project has been canceled. Though, no details of what went on behind the scene are still a mystery but it appears that the idea of the developers clashed at some levels with the publisher of the game.

It was through an official Tweet that Realtech VR revealed that the project is canceled now but then it was deleted. After a while there was another Tweet, which says they will not continue working on any third-party licenses anymore.

Now, it is obviously clear that Realtech VR surely have faced some problem with publisher Square Enix, which have led them to reach such conclusion and because, they are not allowed to publicly discuss the nature of the dispute with anyone, they are keeping a mild tone at it. We are pretty sure that fans that were having high expectations for the first three games of Tomb Raider series are quite hurt in this short-lived hope of theirs. We can easily relate to that.

Although, Realtech VR have been working on those titles for some time and their re-mastered version of Tomb Raider 1 and 2 is probably available on mobile devices. Recently, Square Enix has revealed the next installment of the Tomb Raider series titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider and there is a release date for September 14, 2018 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Skeptical fans are speculating that perhaps the copyright owners are doing this because of the belief that they may not get enough hype for their newest Tomb Raider title if re-mastered version of the original trilogy of Tomb Raider is on the way. We think of it as just a possibility but even a very far-fetched one at that.

The creator-owned comic-book series The Walking Dead from Image Comics by writer Robert Kirkman (Battle Pope, Invincible) has done all sorts of wonders from its launch in 2003. Another spin-off show Fear The Walking Dead is growing its audience as well.

The franchise also spawned a couple of successful games for mobile devices and other platforms. Seems like, The Walking Dead is aiming for being the most adapted concept on various media. Following the insane success of the free-to-play mobile game Pokémon GO, The Walking Dead is coming soon with the AR technology for their upcoming mobile release The Walking Dead: Our World.

Developer Next Games have dropped a sneak peek gameplay trailer for upcoming The Walking Dead: Our World on YouTube recently.

Those who have already played the predecessor game employing AR technology could immediately relate the similarities between Pokémon GO and The Walking Dead: Our World, well, except for the end of the world part of course. Since the game is based on AMC television series, which means you may bump into Carl Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Glenn Rhee, Rick Grimes or Michonne cleaning up zombie hordes as well as yourself.

Tomb Raider 1+2+3 Will Be Remastered

90's action-adventure gaming age would have been entirely different if not for Eidos Interactive to come up with the legendary Tomb Raider series. The popularity of the franchise spawned two live-action movies starring Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie in the lead role and a reboot movie by actor Alicia Vikander reprises the character of Lara Croft, scheduled to release on March 16, 2018. All we need is some re-mastered edition of the old Tomb Raider games.

Well, guess what? That is exactly what is going to happen now. Developer Realtech VR takes the responsibility of re-invigorating these games as re-mastered edition. They have already ported Tomb Raider 1 and 2 for mobile devices successfully and now they are headed for PC with these games. Aside from graphical enhancement, the Tomb Raider trilogy will run on a brand-new 3D engine and will feature support for OpenVR.

RELATED: Warcraft III Update Suggests Remastered Edition?

In a recent conversation on Twitter, Realtech VR let it slip that they are up to re-mastering the Tomb Raider games for Steam, which you can see below.

Below is an example of how it is going to turn out as the re-mastered version of Tomb Raider for PC once they are done. It will run on a full HD 1080p display and at 60fps.

The best part of this news is that, if you already happen to have Tomb Raider 1, 2 or 3 on Steam, you will get the re-mastered editions free and no re-purchasing is required at all. The developers have same plans for GOG but whether or not that is possible is still a question. At this point in time of many kick-ass games out there, a lot of people didn't even realize that the first games of Tomb Raider series are actually available on Steam.

While the modern day reboot installments of the Tomb Raider series are behind the inspiration for the movie adaption, players deserve the chance to go back to the roots of this game to find out first hand, what made it one of the greatest. The polygonal shape of Lara Croft's design however stays almost all the same but in overall, the sneak preview looks very promising. If not anything, this attempt to re-master will at least bring these good old games back to PC for a new generation of gamers.

So, the bursting demonic skulls and shooting stuff into a virtual reality hell in Doom VFR is really something that will always bound to keep you on the edge of your seat. Though you are certainly outnumbered by the massive number of your enemies but you will never out of choice for a gun from your arsenal that will not satisfy you by blowing your demonic opponents to bits. The BFG, Heavy Assault Rifle and Plasma Rifle are only a few to name among them.

It doesn't take for a genius to know that in a first-person shooter game, you always got to keep moving as it is the key-part of your survival. Doom VFR is no different in this case as well. Plus, if you are using your trusty PS VR Aim controller, the accuracy of your aim to kill will give you some great demon-slaying satisfaction. Oh, there are five unique weapon mods to blow up those fiends back to the depth of Hell they came from.

Doom VFR is already out compatible with PlayStation VR and HTC Vive headsets for players to enjoy worldwide. While some might think that the game probably is just a VR version of the 2016's title it is actually much more than that. This one is a carefully crafted version to outfit the strength and weaknesses of VR and it's really worth your interest.

Square Enix Brings Manga to VR

You might know the developer studio Square Enix for popular video games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts series but they sure are more than that. They can do a lot more than give you the best role-playing game experiences and they intend to do just that next. For some time now, they have been working with virtual reality and during New York Comic-Con, they have announced their upcoming project.

They are working on "Project Hikari", a completely new project to introduce some popular manga titles into the world of virtual reality and let the fans experience of their interactive adventure. This brand-new venture to bring manga to life through blending stills and animating scenes will thrive to give the cinematic experience to the user which will be completely different than any video game out there.

Apparently, Project Hikari is using the Unreal Engine for their purpose and has selected the title "Tales of Weddings Rings" for adaptation. This fantasy romantic comedy manga story is the creation of artist Maybe. The story revolves around a young man falling in love with a girl and discovers that she is moving to a world, where she is a princess. Regardless, the protagonist follows her and then the fun-part begins.

They way Square Enix has worked on the project, it feels like you are looking at a real-time manga world where everything is moving and changing pace in front of your own eyes. From the drawing styles to the sound effects, everything is drawn in manga-style. Even though the demo they displayed was very brief and was only a single chapter of the tale but it was enough to speculate the full-potential the whole project holds.

Project Hikari might give you the vibe of an anime movie and not what you expect from a regular manga, but the studio official ensured that in the final output, we will be given enough options to enjoy it as we see fit. So, you can re-visit the previous chapter or pause at your will.

New chapters of this VR series will be released in an episodic manner but it is yet to reveal that how much each episode will cost approximately. By the looks of it, Square Enix can successfully venture out other manga or popular comic-book series with Project Hikari in the future. A definitive release date for Project Hikari is still not announced but it will come out sometime in 2018 for sure.

Before we indulge ourselves into vivid imaginations about how that turn out to be, lets catch up with the latest trailer for The Walking Dead: Our World mobile game.

Not long ago, there was a news of The Walking Dead VR game in development and maybe looks like AMC and Next Games has been cooking up The Walking Dead: Our World as part of that plan. The latter being responsible for the award-winning mobile game The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land, we can only expect something truly extraordinary to come out in the end. The creators of the game have decided to use “location-based augmented reality” for this upcoming TWD project, which looks really promising and fantastic at the same time.

That means, if you are a fan-boy of The Walking Dead, you get to experience an intense gameplay along with your favorite characters through the game.

Doom, Fallout 4 and Skyrim VR Release Date

Virtual reality is becoming a trend these days and it is also impacting the video game industry. Many studios who realize the potential of riding this tide are releasing VR versions of their popular titles now to give their fans an all-new 3D experience and Bethesda Softworks decides to be wise like that. So, what they did is that they have taken projects of pre-existing games like Doom, Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to produce VR versions for them.

Doom
Aside from the superior graphics excellence of modern time, Doom actually hasn't evolved from its core concept of shooting massive hordes of demons from Mars, beside the improved visuals have amplified the intensity of the game even more. We are not saying that's a bad thing but how about getting a bit more up close and personal with the minions of Hell? That wouldn't be so bad and Bethesda already gave us a preview of how it would look like at E3 2017 Showcase. We agree that Doom VFR will blow first person shooter loving gamers mind if not the brains.

Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is perhaps the most successful title of the entire Fallout series and probably that is why Bethesda has chosen the title for a VR treatment. As you struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, the virtual reality makes the aspects of the game pretty real to you. The entire game is re-imagined and you will notice that in combat and crafting. It's not just a tour of the Wasteland but the complete in-game world of the original game and t hat includes hundreds of locations. Even if you have played Fallout 4 before, this is a chance to experience the game once more with a new perspective.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The entire open world of action role-playing game Skyrim along with three of its official DLC; Dawnguard, Dragonborn and Hearthfire are what you are getting in Skyrim VR. The scale and depth of this epic fantasy is re-imagined as you fight to save the world from the menace of the fabled dragon Alduin the World-Eater. Fighting dragons and exploring mountains will be more lifelike now than it was when you played Skyrim previously. Be sure to choose your own way to roam this open world as you play.

What we learn about the release dates for these VR projects are that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will see release for PlayStation VR on November 17 and then on HTC Vive at some point in 2018. Doom VFR will come out next on December 1 for PlayStation VR and Vive. Fallout 4 VR will be released on PC for the HTC Vive and the release date is December 12. So, we can be pretty thankful to Bethesda Softworks for bringing us all these virtual reality games throughout the year and expect them to create some original VR games as well.
