Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Easter Egg Refers to Sunset Overdrive

Although debuted as an Xbox One-exclusive, action-adventure shooter Sunset Overdrive never received its due sequel and now that publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment owns developer Insomniac Games, it may come to PlayStation 5.

Ahead of launch later this week, PlayStation posts on social media about upcoming third-person platform shooter Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, teasing players with an Easter egg featuring Fizzie, a beloved mascot from original Sunset Overdrive.

Out of nowhere, official Twitter handle for PlayStation brand has shared an image of Insomniac Games promoting new Ratchet & Clank game, only to tie it in with a Sunset Overdrive reference that starts a major rumor mill among fans online.

Sunset Overdrive mascot Fizzie is featured in a latest Tweet and then another promotional new trailer briefly glimpses at a hidden plushy of it. All of a sudden, a Twitter account for Fizzie then starts Tweeting after staying dormant for years.

PlayStation shares a Tweet by Insomniac Games lately and quoted it with an image of Fizzie in a follow-up.

Latest trailer for Rift Apart reveals titular Lombax hero wielding a weapon called RYNO 8, which can apparently open inter-dimensional portals and summon objects from various other realms existing within PlayStation games shared universe.

Ratchet even brings a Thunder Jaw from Horizon Zero Dawn via a rift among many other things using RYNO 8. Aside from adding an image of Fizzie, official PlayStation account added hashtag "#PlayStationStudiosFamily" in their recent Tweet.

Sony acquired Insomniac to their lineup of first-party studios for a sum of $229 million in 2019 and fans have since been speculating if this buyout would lead to a new Sunset Overdrive game for PlayStation as they own rights to its series IP.

Other than Sony registering a trademark of Sunset Overdrive, a recent interview of Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith with GQ magazine reveals his interest of working on a sequel for PlayStation and nothing is really stopping them.

Sunset Overdrive in-game character Fizzie coming out of slumber on Twitter is also a little too obvious of a tease. However, Sony is not making anything official just yet but people are still going crazy over all the possibilities for a sequel.

Insomniac Games could very well be having fun with Sunset Overdrive while promoting Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. They also tagged fellow first-party studios Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch Productions on same Tweet.
