Samurai Shodown 2019 Gameplay Overview

SNK is back to get players to "Embrace Death" once again with 2019 Samurai Shodown reboot.

Returning to their roots of blade-wielding fighting nearly a decade after, Samurai Shodown is the latest in legendary fighting game series by developer/publisher SNK that is scheduled to launch on 2019 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Though it originally inspired a unique gameplay mechanics that allowed swordplay in genre of fighting games, a lot of that has changed somehow in its transition from 2D graphics to 3D animation renders over the years for better.

As we mentioned about change in playing style, newest Samurai Shodown will deprive new and season players of "Combo", which is an intentional move by developers to gradually make you skilled in combat other than relying on button mashing.

In fact, relying on the latter and being impatient in a face-off can cost you dearly if you are not paying attention. So, learn from mistakes you made in each battle and hone on striking at a precise time to be far more effective in a fight.

One core gameplay elements distinct to the franchise is Rage Gauge that gets heated up for each time you take a hit and when it is at max Rage, players get bonus attack damage for every single blow they can land on their opponent in a match.

Other than that and a Weapon Flipping Technique to disarm your rival, you can now deliver a Lightning Blade attack by performing Rage Explosion. Once used, it will take away your Rage Gauge and you are to survive with skillful moves.

It looks like SNK has added a Dojo Mode for players to "git gud" before they go butting heads in multiplayer. Through a revolutionary deep learning AI, your play style will be analyzed from offline or story mode playthrough.

Thus, the game creates a simulation with your unique way of playing into a CPU-controlled "ghost" character. You can either send your ghost fighter into clouds to challenge other players or even go up against a top professional from around the world.

Additional characters will be added via post-launch DLC and placing a pre-order for Samurai Shodown reboot before June 30 would offer you a free Season Pass. It gives you access to four playable DLC characters and Nakoruru Retro 3D costume over first six months.

Over a decade may have changed a few aspects of the series but a heavy influence of Japanese culture remains intact in its core to unleash a new era of samurai warriors upon us once again with a brand-new installment.

Despite being a weapon-based fighting game series, Samurai Shodown always relied heavily on a plot and upcoming 2019 game is no different. Set prior to the events of Samurai Spirits from 1993, this reboot can become another hit for staying true to its heart.

Samurai Shodown 2019 Release Date

Upcoming rebooted Samurai Shodown game is coming to PS4 and Xbox One in June, followed by a Switch and PC release later.

Carrying an entire generation worth of reputation in making legendary fighting game series like Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury and King of Fighters, developer SNK is marking their return to the genre with newest installment of Samurai Shodown in 2019.

Back in September 2018, there was only a brief teaser where it was titled as Samurai Spirits and there were no official release date or any select platforms. However, those queries are all answered today at PAX East 2019 with another trailer.

Above shown gameplay moments are only a few samples from a hands-on demo and currently, 16 characters are planned for launch. On taking damage, players would fill up a Rage Gauge to power up certain attacks at some point.

Initially, the game is arriving on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles this June and then would see Nintendo Switch release in Q4 2019. According to official announcement, PC platform launch will happen at a later date and that could also be in 2020.

Contrary to what we believed earlier about the game being set in the aftermath of Samurai Shodown V Special, this rebooted title chronologically takes place in between 18th century time period of Samurai Shodown V and the very first game.

Judging by modern day trend, SNK is most probably open to include additional characters through post-launch DLC. It recreates the same old manga inspired looks of favorite series regulars from original 2D designs and rendered them in polished 3D graphics.

Heading for a less combo-focused gameplay and looking to emphasize on delivering well placed fatal blow on opponent is taking it to a new direction. Super Special Move is limited to one per match and that makes things more interesting.

After launching a definitive collection of some of the great video games from arcade era as SNK 40th Anniversary Collection on November 2018 for Nintendo Switch, these classic retro titles are now heading towards PlayStation 4.

While setting to sail for PS4 on March 19, 2019, the bundle features a wide-array of artwork and rare promotional assets available in high-definition and nostalgic fans are sure to appreciate them for their sentimental values.

A compilation like this takes a lot of curating and research before they are all jammed into one. All the SNK titles are put together by developer Digital Eclipse, who previously worked on Mega Man Legacy Collection and the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.

Since most of the games are from SNK years before they moved over to Neo Geo system, they do not have the edge games like The King of Fighters or Samurai Shodown had in later days. However, some of these picks are of historical importance in terms of the medium.

New Samurai Shodown Game Revealed

SNK is releasing a brand new title from their fighting game series Samurai Shodown in 2019 for PlayStation 4.

After a rumor of SNK to reveal their next game for some time over social media, we know now that it is going to be a new installment of popular sword fighting game franchise Samurai Shodown, currently revealed as Samurai Spirits.

Therefore, we should note that this game originally used to be called by the same name in Japan when it originally released back in 1993. Obviously this is a total revamp of the fan-favorite series after a decade and at this time; they are planning to release the title in 2019.

A brand-new teaser trailer came along to herald the return of an iconic arcade fighting classic in an all-new avatar.

RELATED: SNK 40th Anniversary Collection Announced for Switch

Opening of the teaser clip suggests that Samurai Shodown is still attached to its roots of 18th-century feudal Japan and Samurai Spirits is set in the year 1787, which means the premise of the game takes place following the events of Samurai Shodown V Special.

Then the narration is suddenly interrupted by legendary series protagonist and skilled swordsman Haohmaru as he slashes though the screen first and then unsheathes his katana on his opponents, taking them all down one by one.

That insane rush of blood squirting from your opponents with each blow of your samurai warrior is pure nostalgia factor and each character sprites are now rendered into more realistic 3D graphics using the powerful Unreal Engine.

The latest fighting game to employ the same engine is Dragon Ball FighterZ and we cannot complain about the outcome. Aside from Haohmaru, characters like Charlotte, Galford, Genjuro Kibagami, Kyoshiro Senryo, Hanzo Hattori, Nakoruru and Ukyo Tachibana are also confirmed.

We don't have enough details on hand about the game yet but we do know that it is initially headed towards PlayStation 4. While we are not sure about a PC release, announcement for Nintendo Switch and Xbox One version may come out later.

The last game from the series was Samurai Shodown: Sen from 2008 and the non-canonical release Samurai Shodown Anthology in 2009. The idea of bringing back one of their classics after the launch of SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy will definitely make the fans happy.

Porting old games to console has one big perk over everything and it is that nostalgia factor that drives players to it. Now that it is heading towards Switch, gamers can take it anywhere they want and enjoy it in high-resolution.

The list may be a major let-down for fans of Metal Slug, The Last Blade or Samurai Showdown series but according official website, they will announce more games in forthcoming days. If not those big-name games, then at least Garou: Mark of the Wolves should make it to the list then.

Otherwise, it would seem that in the name of an anniversary collection, they are simply trying to rip-off players with some of their old-school games that many don't even care about and make a quick buck with SNK 40th Anniversary Collection.

For those of you who don't know, she made her debut in Fatal Fury 3 before she made her way into KOF series. Upon entering the tournament of KOF '97 in a team with Billy Kane and Ryuji Yamazaki, she quickly became very popular to fans. Her Japanese fan base actually voted for "Blue" Mary Ryan through gaming magazines to be picked for her entry in The King of Fighters '97. Billy and Yamazaki were also picked with her and you can re-create the original team of these three once again in KOF XIV.

Blue Mary is one of the characters of the series with a very unique move-set as her fighting style is based on Sambo, a Soviet martial art form. Most of her attacks are grapple moves and that thing didn't change for till date according to the trailer. Back in the day, designers had a tough time to animate her moves but it was a fun experience in the end and everything worked out pretty fine. KOF XIV used a new graphic engine to render those moves in real-time 3D.

The King of Fighters '97 Global Match Out Now

One of the most prominent entries into fighting game series The King of Fighters from SNK, The King of Fighters '97 was announced to be ported in 2018. This was a very exciting moment for the old-school KOF fans who now have moved to various other titles on modern day gaming platforms but still misses those nostalgic arcade moments spent playing those games over and over again. Their wait is finally over as The King of Fighters '97 Global Match is here now.

King of Fighters '97 adds some more excitement by entering the ring after more than two decades of its initial release. Because, this is not just port of the original game but it has improvements like online multiplayer feature added to it, which justifies the title "Global Match". You can also enjoy single player matches while waiting for the ongoing matchmaking process. Fighting games are made to participate with other players to test your skills and KOF '97 Global Match just made it more competitive than ever.

Initially we neither had an official release date or even a high-resolution picture during the announcement but now we are offered to take a look at the teaser trailer for King of Fighters '97 Global Match right here.

The world of SNK fighting game fans were already pretty hyped this year with King of Fighters XIV and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. Now, the title is just not a typical port trying to make its way to next gen consoles. Aside from newly introduced online multiplayer mode to KOF '97, there is a special Gallery Mode with concept arts and animations that is waiting to be unlocked. You are allowed to use soundtracks from the game as background music and customize in-game menus as you like.

KOF '97 had a great significance for entire franchise as it saw the conclusion of "The Orochi Saga", which begins from King of Fighters '94 and paved way for future plotlines. It also saw introduction of characters Billy Kane, Blue Mary and Ryuji Yamazaki from another of SNK's fighting game series Fatal Fury. These three were actually draft picked as a result of a fan-voting on Japanese gaming magazines Famitsu, Gamest and Neo Geo Freak. Whereas Billy Kane already appeared on KOF '95, Mary and Yamazaki made their debut in this installment.

A Mainstream Appeal

The inclusion of Iori Yagami and Shingo Yabuki as single entry character in the middle of various fighters team was also an attraction for fans. Transformations of Iori Yagami and Leona Heidern into Orochi Iori and Orochi Leona were another superb aspect of the game that perfectly meshed with the actual plot of KOF '97. If they would have decided to just add those two personas as two different characters to pick from, things wouldn't have probably worked out like it did with their original plan.

RELATED: Art of Fighting Anthology on PlayStation 4

Back then, KOF series were generating less revenue for SNK on arcade systems than Fatal Fury and other fighting games. It was because of the 3V3 fighting system that increased the match duration but since that was the core game mechanics, they couldn't touch it. So, developers for the title did only little tweak to The King of Fighters '97 by removing little features that actually speed up things a bit. In term of gameplay, Advanced and Extra Modes were also added to the game to choose from.

Advanced and Extra Mode Features

KOF '97 received a huge tonal shift in term of gameplay that separates it from previous KOF entries. The King of Fighters '97 Global Match is co-developed by Code Mystics, the same studio who worked on Samurai Shodown V. The title is charged on $14.99 and available for cross-buy as well as cross play on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

RELATED: Samurai Shodown V Special for PlayStation 4

The King of Fighters '97 has been ported on Android, iOS, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PSP platforms. Now, it has made debut on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita as The King of Fighters '97 Global Match. With SNK becoming more concern with their early arcade titles, so many have made it to consoles already and KOF '97 is the latest addition to that list. We are looking forward to see The King of Fighters '98 has the same treatment for the sake of fan-service.

The only exception from the chain is The King of Fighters '98 and The King of Fighters 2002, which is basically a "dream match" with the ensemble characters from the previous installments of the series. Good news for the fan is that The King of Fighters 2002 is free on GOG.com now.

After a few release with the 4-on-4 "Striker Match" format, The King of Fighters 2002 brought the classic three-on-three fighting system back again by ditching that formula. The game was dropped on arcade systems back in 2002 from Eolith and Playmore as the ninth title of the series. Considering all the issues people are complaining about, you can go and grab the new SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy instead.

This installment will feature online support so that players can compete with others through multiplayer matchmaking and that is the reason why SNK has branded it by naming "Global Match" after 20 years of its original release. Approximately, spring 2018 will see the release of the port in Japan. However, SNK made no official statement of whether or not they are going to make it available on the western regions.

Though, there won't be any graphical enhancement or extra content to expect, support for trophies will be included in it.

The King of Fighters '98 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

There was a time when Neo Geo games used to dominate the arcade games single handedly with their The King of Fighters and Fatal Fury series. They do deserve credit for the evolution of these modern days fighting games, which they helped to advance. In the year 2017, Neo Geo has ported many of their games to consoles and has been keeping busy with King of Fighters XIV and their new heroine based spin-off game SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.

Courtesy of HAMSTER, the most praised installment of the KoF series, The King of Fighters '98 is just dropped on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as "ACA Neo Geo The King of Fighters '98", almost after two decades of its original release.

Started from King of Fighters '94, "The Orochi Saga" finally came to an end with King of Fighters '97 and then there was a break in the middle with KoF '98. Before the NESTS saga could begin, the title was released as a "Dream Match" that features almost every fighter that had been introduced till that point, regardless they are dead or alive in the story at that point. SNK even took the liberty of including the returning boss character Rugal Bernstein, who died back in KoF '95.

You will be glad to know that this port is directly the arcade version of The King of Fighters '98 which you have been so used to play for a long time back then and you can see exactly that on the clip above. It's not some silly attempt of remix or a revamp and most definitely, not a rearranged version of KoF '98: Ultimate Match. Since the game is now on consoles, you can always tweak the difficulty settings and other options as you see fit for your taste.

Art of Fighting Anthology on PlayStation 4

Fighting game genre in video game history has evolved with popular arcade games from SNK in the 90's. The game series has introduced a couple of sick techniques of playing that was later adapted by other series from the fighting game category. Then other arcade games came along, ruled over and video games have found new platforms to venture.

Since tomorrow sees the debut of the Art of Fighting Anthology on PlayStation Store, we thought that it is high time that we talk about this but first, check out the launch trailer.

For those who have already spend a lot of time playing these games from the franchise and those who never even heard the name of these classic masterpiece, it's time to enjoy the root of duel-fights on PlayStation 4. In the beginning of the development stage, the characters of these games were literally huge but over time, that has come to a manageable size.

However, Art of Fighting and its sequels have quite detailed character sprites. They also invented the styles like taunting, special moves to inflict maximum damage to the opponent, real-time battle damage in game and graphical scaling; all of these were featured on the first game. The sequel mostly focused on the playable character roster. Since the story-arc of Art of Fighting was revolved towards Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia's rescue mission to find Yuri Sakazaki, no one saw it coming that she would be a playable character in Art of Fighting 2.

The design of Art of Fighting 2 was largely inspired by Fatal Fury at that time from SNK. By the time the studio started working on Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior, they used both the 2D animation graphics and motion capture to flesh out the characters; resulting the process to take 10 times longer than they all expected.

Nobuyuki Kuroki of SNK has expressed his desire to work on an Art of Fighting reboot project in the future as he grew up playing the game. The anthology pack will feature Art of Fighting, Art of Fighting 2 and Art of Fighting 3: The Path of the Warrior of the series.
