State of Decay 2 Coming to Steam

Undead Labs announced to release PC version of ultimate zombie survival fantasy State of Decay 2 via Steam in early 2020.

Last year, open-world zombie survival game State of Decay 2 from developer Undead Labs and publisher Microsoft Studios came out for Windows PC and Xbox One, amassing an impressive number of over 6 million players so far.

A successful sequel to 2013 survival horror title State of Decay, the game is currently available for purchase on Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass. According to an official announcement, SoD2 will also arrive on Steam in early 2020.

Following its release, Undead Labs has received a lot of fan-requests for bringing their ultimate zombie action-adventure to Steam. Even though it took them a year and so, they finally decided to bring the title to digital storefront of Valve.

SoD2 will come to Steam with Xbox Live cross-play support that lets you play with three of your other friends over Windows PC and Xbox One. After all, joining with group of friends will better your chances of survival in a post-apocalyptic.

Initially, survivors could jump into action on any of two select platforms using Xbox Play Anywhere system. Then an accidental leak from PAX East 2018 hinted at possibility of future Steam release before only a month of its launch.

An error message popped up unexpectedly during a developer live-stream on Twitch regarding a login issue of Steam. Though all video evidence was deleted, people were skeptical when they found Valve's launcher listed in FAQ page as a topic.

Original SoD found home in Early Access of Steam a few months after console launch, followed by remastered release of Year One: Survival Edition, most likely because there was no timed exclusivity period for Xbox console back then.

Since no definitive release date has been revealed for Steam launch yet, you can go ahead and add State of Decay 2 on wishlist to get instant notifications on any updates made to store page in future while you wait for its release next year.

You get to choose from two new difficulty modes called Dread Zone and Nightmare Zone to put your survival skills to test. Either go out on behalf of your existing community or just start a new one before dipping your toes into those zones.

Dread Zone will challenge you with a blood plague that comes with a faster-acting infection gauge. There will be fewer resources to scavenge while pits you against deadlier horde of zombies and plague-infected juggernauts.

Nightmare Zone is for more experienced and hardcore players, who will come across a tougher crowd of hostile NPCs and an infection period that lets one last for only 10 minutes. Obviously, packs of annoying freaks will make it miserable for you in the mean time.

Before talking about what we are getting from it, be sure to take a look at the official trailer for the free update from X018 last weekend.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 Daybreak Pack DLC Release Date

A bunch of new content has been added to the game including new weapons and gameplay items to use. For starter, Zedhunter has introduced eight different types of crossbows, an iconic zombie-slaying weapon that is silent and deadly.

This could be a game changer as you don't need to get close to have a killshot at the Zeds and risk your health or even make noise using a firearm that would eventually bring more of them. So, you can easily score more headshots than before without breaking a sweat.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 Independence Pack DLC

One of the best things about these crossbow bolts are that players can also recover them after making a shot. So, you can become an eco-friendly zombie hunter and reduce noise pollution at the same time. Plus, they don't break or jam like traditional guns.

Aside from this long-range shooter, three new melee and three new close-combat weapons are added to your arsenal to give you a better fighting chance against a horde of zombies. Just pick up from a stash of swords and knives to chop off the deadmeats.

Zedhunter update also offer further customization options that allows one to reset the core skill specializations of a survivor.  For example, if you simply want to switch your Cardio from Marathon to Backpacking, you just read a new training manual and then just change the skill specialty.

However, the downside of this trade-off is that players will gain experience at a slower rate than usual for this new skill. Six new "quirk skills" are added to give you extra buff to favor your community and get these skill books from the local Skills Trader in town.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 May Come to Steam

In addition to gameplay, the SoD2 free update adds three new plague consumables to boost your survivor abilities. These are highly potent and increase your abilities to see in the dark or make you invisible to zeds and even attract them in some cases.

Since they are basically poison to human survivors, it is up to you whether the infection is worth swapping for some perks. Also, new achievements and missions are added for you to notice them labeled as "Mysterious" during a quest.

Undead Labs was downright committed to the State of Decay fan base to offer them the experience of ultimate zombie survival fantasy and Zedhunter free update is a step towards that direction. In 2019, the studio will bring back Trumbull Valley map and new difficulty settings.

State of Decay 2 Crosses 2 Million Players

State of Decay 2 creates record by bagging over 2 million players in first two weeks of worldwide launch.

Open world zombie survival game State of Decay 2 from Undead Labs and Microsoft Studios was out on May 22 and got an amazing start. Within two days after launch, the game has built a strong community of over 1 million players. Now, in less than two weeks of release on PC and Xbox One, they have gathered a force of 2 million survivors. It's really remarkable to see these many players sharing a post-apocalyptic world for resources and fighting undead hordes to keep up.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 Crosses 1 Million Players

With so many players participating in the game, there are many interesting numbers popping out. For example, survivors have already slain nearly 2 billion zombies, which is one third of Earth's population now! Over 121,000 community stories were completed at the same time and newer ones were built on map for facing new challenges. Players have learned to stay alive for straight three days on average and all of these numbers indicates their dedication and excitement.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 Gameplay Launch Trailer

The developers are also tirelessly trying to provide major bug-fixes, minor tuning in gameplay and other improvements for a satisfying experience playing. Additional contents and regular updates will maintain their flow from Undead Labs to sustain this incredible community. The already refined story setup charmed its magic through a bit of open-world exploring, slight role-playing, some third-person action during zombie-killing and then nicely balancing all of those aspects together.

State of Decay 2 Crosses 1 Million Players

State of Decay 2 breaks record by gathering over 1 million players in first two days of global release.

Open world zombie survival game State of Decay 2 from Undead Labs and Microsoft Studios has saw worldwide release only two days ago and they are already on news. Yes, within two days after launching on PC and Xbox One, the game has amassed over 1 million players. Considering the number in such a short period of time, zombie apocalypse is finally gathering people for a single reason. Now, only trick is to survive waves after waves of zombie hordes.

Ultimate Edition of the game has opened it up for owners of a copy on May 18 and then the rest pour in on May 22 with their Standard Edition. With that, there are currently a million different stories of survival around the world and everyone is having their own unique experiences. Following launch, the game has been played for over six million hours and there is gameplay footage of almost worth 3.5 million hours from different streamers on Mixer, Twitch and YouTube.

RELATED: State of Decay 2 May Come to Steam

There are some more interesting numbers we would like to add. For instance, 6 million firecrackers and fireworks were thrown for either signaling fellow survivors to get help or celebrate success in post-apocalyptic world. Players have collectively read 2 million textbooks and ate 6 million bags of snack. Over 675 million zombies were exterminated and that means an average player have killed more than 600 of them alone. Average survival period was three in-game days and some even managed to stretch to a full month.

However, you should realize that assembling 1 million players doesn't necessarily means that it has sold over a million copies. Even if it sounds confusing, we need to consider that the game is currently up on Xbox One's game streaming service Xbox Game Pass and subscribing members of this service are allowed to play it for free. So, you can see how that thing works now.

Being the only exciting Xbox One-exclusive game of this year aside from the slightly disappointing Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 is under a lot of pressure from before the release. Yet, numbers are surely looking exciting for Undead Labs and Microsoft Studios' join effort project. Because of dealing with a number of bugs, it also failed to land an impressive review from critics. Although it is a successful sequel that lived up to every expectation, it still has a long way to go.

The video has been removed afterwards but by then, it already circulated throughout online and rumor is spread about its possible release on digital distribution platform Steam. Although the game’s FAQ has Valve’s launcher listed as a topic, there are no details to reach any conclusion on that.

Now that the video containing that error message is removed from Twitch archive of Undead Labs, it can no longer be considered as a mere buzz. Besides, if this rumors and speculation came true then we shouldn't be very surprised because the first game of the series was initially released on Steam’s Early Access alongside Xbox 360.

Be sure to take a quick look at the clip below to have some idea on combat and surrounding environments you will be stepping on from Undead Labs.

The gameplay trailer from above gives us some more in-depth glance at base building and character selection than the once we saw before. Defending your base from attacks of incoming zombie horde is as important as clearing out the once roaming in the street. Though it wasn't some serious piece of performance in the clip, we still get the idea of how things are. Most important aspect we noticed is that the balance of stockpile, build base and protect it from undead invasion at all time.

Combat system presents some variety for you to keep from being repetitive. You can sneak up on them using stealth, melee attack them directly, run over by them with your vehicle, hit them with your car door or just grab one of them and throw away. One thing that you will quickly realize after a while that, these zombies don't come at you all at once but if you linger them for some time, they will quickly overwhelm you and it will be too late then.

State of Decay 2 Won't Have Micro-Transactions

We live in such an age of loot-boxes and in-game purchases now that a new game from a major publisher that doesn't include the concept of micro-transactions of any sort is hard to believe. If the title happens to be one of the most-anticipated upcoming releases then it is literally unbelievable for the players. Following Sony’s God of War taking such initiative, developer Undead Labs and publisher Microsoft Studios decided to do the same with State of Decay 2.

Whereas micro-transactions and loot boxes are a ploy to pull more money from the consumers aside from the purchase price they already paid and every other studio is pretty fond of this practice, Undead Labs took a bold move by strictly standing on the opposite way of this road. Though we don't have a direct quote but studio head of developer, Jeff Strain assures that there won't be any micro-transactions in their game.

Despite their initial stand against the industry trend, when it was revealed that the Standard Edition of State of Decay 2 will cost you only $29.99, fans started speculating what could be the reason for this considerably low cost and the studio had to re-assure them that they are sticking to their earlier decision about loot boxes. This theory comes from the fact that the original State of Decay had a loot box "Prepper's Pack" consists of a gun, a melee weapon and an SUV available for $0.99.

When one of Undead Labs’ live streams was overwhelmed with comments asking for their plan to compensate the low-cost, the developers had to come clean about it. Although micro-transactions and loot boxes are completely off the table for State of Decay 2, there will be some paid DLC contents just like every other games does for the players to enjoy. If you are wondering what about the cosmetic items, then probably that also falls into the same category.

The developers do recognize that by making their game available on the market for only $29.99 was a huge risk but sinking into the infamous micro-transaction trend would be even worse for long-run. Apparently, they wanted to create a dedicated community for the game so that they all support the title and buys the upcoming expansions as well. Another reason that probably made them cautious was about the idea was the major loot box controversy of Star Wars Battlefront II from last year.
