After selling over 12 million copies worldwide, developer NetherRealm Studios announced to end post-launch content support for 2.5D fighting game Mortal Kombat 11 to focus on brand-new project few months back in July 2021.

There were already rumors of next Mortal Kombat game being in development ever since and an alleged leak recently claims that Mortal Kombat 12 is simply a re-release of MK11, including characters from Mortal Kombat 9 and MKX.

A supposed ex-employee claimed in a 4chan post that NetherRealm has recently fired over a dozen staff following MK11: Ultimate Edition launch and Mortal Kombat 12 is an extended re-release of MK11 with MK9 and MKX roster.

Kombat Pack 3 never came out for MK11 but its fighters Ermac, Harley Quinn and Takeda will be included in MK12 eventually, which NetherRealm reportedly plans to reveal on December 9, same day as The Game Awards 2021 event.

Twitter user Ska'Vorah posts a screenshot of now-deleted 4chan post regarding Mortal Kombat 12 rumors.

Given production history of NetherRealm Studios in past, dev team were likely to start working on Injustice 3. However, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb reported that next Mortal Kombat game may actually arrive before Injustice 3.

With an incredible sales milestone of MK11 and uncertainty about future of publisher Warner Bros. earlier, they simply opted for MK12. A job listing also suggests that NetherRealm's latest project may very well be Mortal Kombat 12.

A few months back, there was a Reddit thread that revealed similar details that claimed MK12 base roster have 50 playable characters. Doomslayer, John Wick, Li Mei and Reiko will be added later with others in three separate DLC pack.

Of course, people should take these claims with a grain of salt until NetherRealm Studios makes an official announcement. If these Mortal Kombat 12 rumors are actually true, then series fans will really be very disappointed at TGA 2021.
